ज्ञेया द्वादश वर्षांते पञ्चम्यो भरतर्षभ
Know that on the fifth day at the end of twelve years, O best of the Bharatas,
भूरिचन्द्रमयं नागमथवा कलधौतजम्
A serpent made of much silver, or else of refined gold,
पञ्चम्यामर्चयेद्भक्त्या नागं पञ्चफणं शृणु
On the fifth day, with devotion, one should worship a serpent with five hoods—listen.
गन्धपुष्पैः सनैवेद्यैः पूज्य पन्नगसत्तमम्
The best of serpents should be worshipped with fragrances, flowers, and offerings of food.
नारायणबलिः कार्यः सर्पदष्टस्य देहिनः
A sacrifice to Nārāyaṇa should be performed for the person bitten by a serpent.
वृषोत्सर्गस्तु कर्तव्यो गते संवत्सरे नृप
The release of a bull should be performed at the end of the year, O king.
अनंतो वासुकिः शेषः पद्मः कम्बल एव च ४८ धृतराष्ट्रः शंखपालः कालियस्तक्षकस्तथा वत्सरांते पारणं स्यान्महाब्राह्मणभोजनम्
Ananta, Vāsuki, Śeṣa, Padma, Kambala, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Śaṅkhapāla, Kāliya, and Takṣaka—at the end of the year, there should be a concluding rite and a feast for great Brāhmaṇas.
इतिहासविदे नागः कांचनेन कृतो नृप 4.36.
O king, a serpent known from history should be made of gold.
एष पारणके पार्थ विधिः प्रोक्तो विचक्षणैः
O Pārtha, this is the procedure for the concluding rite as declared by the wise.
ये दन्दशूकरदनैर्दष्टाः प्राप्ता ह्यधोगतिम् दांष्ट्रिकं मोक्ष्यते तेषां शुभं स्थानमवाप्स्यति
Those who have been bitten by fanged boars and have fallen to a lower state—the fanged one is released for them, and they will attain an auspicious place.
यश्चेदं शृणुयान्नित्यं पठेद्भक्त्या समन्वितः
Whoever listens to this daily, or recites it with devotion,
यस्त्वालिख्य नरो नागान्कृ ष्णवर्णादिवर्णकैः
Whoever draws serpents, men, or those of dark complexion with various colors,
तस्य तुष्टिं समायांति पन्नगास्तक्षकादयः
To him, satisfaction comes from the serpents, including Takshaka and others.
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन नागान्संपूजयेद्बुधः
Therefore, with all effort, the wise should worship the serpents.
कृत्वा कुशमयान्नागानिंद्राण्या सह पूजयेत्
Having made serpents from kusa grass, one should worship them together with Indrani.
गोधूमैः पयसा स्विन्नैर्भक्ष्यैश्च विविधैस्तथा
With wheat, milk, boiled foods, and various kinds of offerings likewise,
पूजयेत्कुरुशार्दूल तस्य शेषादयो नृप स शांतिलोकमासाद्य मोदते शाश्वतीः समाः
He should worship, O tiger among Kurus; to him, Shesha and others, O king, grant peace, and he attains the world of tranquility, rejoicing for eternal years.
इत्येतत्कथितं वीर पञ्चमीव्रतमुत्तमम् 4.36.
Thus has been described, O hero, the excellent vow of Panchami.
( ॐ कुरुकुल्ले हुं फट्स्वाहा ) भक्तेन भक्तिसहिताः शतपञ्चमीषु ये पूजयंति भुजगान्कुसुमोपहारैः
(Om kurukulle hum phat svaha) Those who worship serpents with devotion and offerings of flowers on the hundred Panchamis,
श्रीपञ्चमीव्रतवर्णनम् दानेन तपसा वापि व्रतेन नियमेन वा
Description of the Panchami vow: By charity, by austerity, by vow, or by discipline,
जपहोमनमस्कारैः संस्कारैर्वा पृथग्विधैः
By recitation, oblation, salutations, or by various rites,
वासुदेवाय सा दत्ता मुनिना मानवृद्धये
It was given to Vasudeva by the sage for the growth of mankind.
वासुदेवोऽपि तां प्राप्य पीनोन्नतपयोधराम्
Vasudeva, having received her, whose breasts were full and high,
भाभासितदिगाभोगां साक्षाद्भानोः प्रभामिव रेमे सह तया राजन्बिभ्रमोद्भ्रांतचित्तया
Whose radiance illuminated the directions, like the brilliance of the sun itself, enjoyed her, O king, with a mind wandering in delight.
सा च विष्णुं जगज्जिष्णुं पतिं त्रिजगतां पतिम्
She worshipped Vishnu, the conqueror of the world, the lord of the three worlds.
हृष्टं पुष्टं जगत्सर्वमभवद्भा वितं तया
The whole world became joyful and nourished by her.
क्षेमं सुभिक्षमारोग्यमनाक्रन्दमनाकुलम्
There was well-being, abundance, health, no lamentation, and no distress.
दिवि देवा मुमुदिरे दानवा दैत्यमागताः
In heaven, the gods rejoiced, and the danavas and daityas departed.
हृदये ब्राह्मणैर्वह्नौ भुज्यते त्रिदिवैर्हविः 4.37.१
In the heart, by the brāhmaṇas, and in the fire, the offering is consumed by the dwellers of heaven.
विरोचनप्रभृतिभिर्दृष्ट्वैवं दैत्यसत्तमैः
When this was seen by Virocana and the foremost among the Daityas,
