हयमेधस्य विघ्ने तु संजाते सगरः पुरा
When an obstacle arose in the horse sacrifice, long ago, Sagara performed this.
तथा रुद्रेण देवेन त्रिपुरं निघ्नता पुरा
Likewise, when Rudra, the god, was destroying Tripura in ancient times, he did the same.
मया समुद्रं विशतां एतदेव व्रतं कृतम् 4.33.
When I entered the ocean, I too performed this very vow.
अन्यैरपि महीपालैरेतदेव कृतं पुरा
Other kings in ancient times have also performed this same rite.
अनेन कृतमात्रेण सर्वविप्रैः प्रमुच्यते
By merely performing this, one is freed from all obstacles by the brahmins.
विघ्नानि तस्य न भवंति गृहे कदाचिद्धर्मार्थकामसुखसिद्धिविघातकानि
Obstacles never arise in his house—those that hinder the attainment of righteousness, wealth, desire, or happiness.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे विनायकचतुर्थीव्रतं नाम त्रयस्त्रिंशतमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttara Parva, in the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Yudhishthira, this is the thirty-third chapter named 'The Vow of Vinayaka Chaturthi.'
शान्तिव्रतवर्णनम् येन चीर्णेन शांतिः स्यात्सर्वदा गृहमेधिनाम्
Description of the Shanti Vow: By which, when observed, peace always arises for householders.
पञ्चम्यां शुक्लपक्षस्य कार्तिके मासि पार्थिव
On the fifth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Kartika, O prince,
नक्तं देवं च संपूज्य हरिं शेषोपरिस्थितम्
At night, worship the deity Hari, who rests upon Shesha.
उदरं तक्षकायेति उरः कर्कोटकाय च
To Takshaka is the belly offered, and to Karkotaka the chest.
शंखपालाय वक्षस्तु कुलिकायेति वै शिरः
To Shankhapala the torso, and to Kulika indeed the head.
क्षीरेण स्नपनं कुर्याद्धरिमुद्दिश्य वाग्यतः
With milk, one should bathe Hari, maintaining control of speech.
एवं संवत्सरस्यांते कुर्याद्ब्राह्मणभोजनम्
In this way, at the end of the year, one should offer food to brahmins.
गां सवत्सां वस्त्रयुगं कांस्यपात्रं सपायसम्
A cow with her calf, a pair of garments, a bronze vessel, and sweet rice pudding—
एवं यः कुरुते भक्त्या व्रतमेतन्नराधिप
Whoever performs this vow with devotion, O king,
शेषाहिभोगशयनस्थमयोगसूतिं संपूज्य यज्ञपुरुषं पतगेंद्रनाथम् 4.34.
Worshipping the Lord of Sacrifice, the king of birds, who lies upon the coils of Shesha, the serpent,
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराणे उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे शांतिव्रतं नाम चतुस्त्रिंशत्तमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttara Parva, in the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Yudhishthira, this is the thirty-fourth chapter named 'The Shanti Vow.'
सारस्वतव्रतवर्णनम् तथैव जनसौभाग्यमतिविद्यासु कौशलम्
Likewise, it brings good fortune among people and great skill in all branches of knowledge.
अभेदश्चापि दंपत्योस्तथा बंधुजनेन च
It also brings harmony between husband and wife, and among relatives.
यस्य संकीर्तनादेव तुष्यतीह सरस्वती
By merely reciting her name, Sarasvatī is pleased here.
योऽयं भक्तः पुमान्कुर्यादेतद्व्रतमनुत्तमम्
Any devoted man who observes this supreme vow,
अथ चादित्यवारेण ग्रहताराबलेन च
on a Sunday, according to the positions of planets and stars,
शुक्लवस्त्राणि दद्याच्च सहिरण्यानि शक्तितः एभिर्मंत्रपदैः पश्चात्पूर्वं कृत्वा कृताञ्जलिः
should give white garments, along with gold, as he is able, after reciting these mantras, with hands joined in reverence.
यथा तु देवि भगवान्ब्रह्मा लोकपिता महः
Just as, O Goddess, the blessed Brahmā, the great father of the worlds,
वेदशास्त्राणि सर्वाणि नृत्यगीतादिकं च यत्
all the Vedas and scriptures, and whatever pertains to dance, song, and the like,
लक्ष्मीर्मेधा वरारिष्टिर्गोरी तुष्टिः प्रभा मतिः
Lakṣmī, intelligence, supreme blessings, Gaurī, satisfaction, radiance, and wisdom—
एवं संपूज्य गायत्रीं वीणाक्षमणिधारिणीम् 4.35.
thus one should worship Gāyatrī, who holds the vīṇā and rosary.
मौनव्रतेन भुञ्जीत सायं प्रातश्च धर्मवित्
The knower of dharma should eat in silence, both in the evening and morning.
तिलैश्च तंडुलप्रस्थं घृतपात्रेण संयुतम्
He should offer a prastha of sesame and rice, together with a vessel of ghee.
