बाहुं च परिरंभिण्यै नृत्यशीलाय वै हरेः
The arm is for embracing, for the one devoted to dance, for Hari.
देव्या मुखं विलासिन्यै वृषेशाय पुनर्विभोः ।। 4.27.
The face of the goddess is for the playful one, for the lord of the bull, for the mighty one.
नेत्रं मदनवासिन्यै विश्वधाम्ने त्रिशूलिने
The eye is for the abode of love, for the universal foundation, for the wielder of the trident.
देव्यै ललाटमिंद्राण्यै हव्यवाहाय वै विभोः
The forehead is for the goddess, for the queen of Indra, for the mighty one who is the bearer of offerings.
विश्वकायै विश्वमुख्यै विश्वपादकरौ शिवौ
For the all-creative one, for the foremost in the universe, the feet and hands are for Shiva.
एवं संपूज्य विधिवदग्रतः शिवयोः पुनः
Thus, having worshipped properly before Shiva and his consort again,
शङ्खचक्रे सकटके स्वस्तिकं वर्द्ध मानकम्
The conch and discus, along with bracelets, the svastika, and the measure of prosperity,
शृंगोदकं बिल्वपत्रं वारि कुंभान्वितं तथा
The horn-water, bilva leaves, and water together with a pot,
तिलोदकं च संप्राप्य स्वप्यान्मार्गशिरादिषु
Having obtained sesame-water, one should sleep on the nights beginning with Mārgashīrsha.
सर्वत्र शुक्लपुष्पाणि प्रशस्तानि शिवार्चने
Everywhere, white flowers are praised for the worship of Shiva.
गौरी मे प्रीयतां नित्यमघनाशाय मंगला
May Gauri always be pleased with me, the auspicious one who destroys sin.
संवत्सरांते लवणं गुडकुंभं समर्जितम् उमामहेश्वरं हैमं तद्वदिक्षुफलैर्युतम् ।। 4.27.
At the end of the year, salt and a pot of molasses, well cleaned, and a golden image of Uma and Maheshvara, along with fruits of the sugarcane,
प्रस्तरावरणं शय्यां सविश्रामां निवेदयेत्
One should offer a bed covered with stone, with a place for rest.
आर्द्रानन्दकरी नाम तृतीयैषा सनातनी
This is the third eternal (vow), called Ārdrānandakari.
इह लोके यमानंदं प्राप्नोति धनसंचयात्
Here in this world, one attains the joy of Yama through the accumulation of wealth.
नारी वा कुरुते या तु कुमारी विधवा तथा
Whether a woman, a maiden, or a widow performs it,
प्रतिपक्षमुपोष्यैवं मंत्रार्चनविधानतः
By fasting on the opposite lunar day, in this way, according to the procedure of mantra and worship,
य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यं श्रावयेद्वापि मानवः
Whoever listens to this daily, or causes it to be heard, that person—
आनंददां सकलदुःखहरां तृतीयां या स्त्री करोति विधिवत्सधवाधवा च
The third wife, who acts according to proper rites, brings joy and removes all sorrow for both the husband and the widow.
चैत्रभाद्रपदमाघवर्णनम् तृतीयात्रयमेतन्मे कृष्ण कस्मान्न कीर्तितम्
Description of the months Caitra, Bhādrapada, and Māgha. O Krishna, why have these three third days not been mentioned by me?
किमहं भक्तिरहितस्त्रयीमार्गातिगो नरः
Am I a man devoid of devotion, who has departed from the path of the three Vedas?
भवान्सर्वार्थानुकूलः सर्वज्ञ इति मे मतिः व्रतं चैतज्जगत्ख्यातं नाख्यातं तेन ते मया
My belief is that you are favorable to all purposes and omniscient. This vow is renowned in the world, yet it was not declared to you by me.
यद्यस्ति श्रवणे बुद्धिः श्रूयतां पाण्डुनन्दन
If you have the intelligence to listen, then hear, O son of Pandu.
जया च विजया चैव उमायाः परिचारिके
Jayā and Vijayā are the attendants of Umā.
भवत्यौ सर्वदा देव्याश्चित्तवृत्तिविदौ किल पूजिता तुष्टिमभ्येति मंत्रै कैश्च वरानने
These two are always aware of the goddess's mental states; when worshipped with mantras, O beautiful-faced one, they bring satisfaction.
तासां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा जया प्रोवाच सादरम् व्रतमुत्सवसंयुक्तं नरनारी मनोरमम्
Hearing those words, Jayā respectfully spoke of a vow, joined with festival, delightful to both men and women.
चैत्रे सिततृतीयायां दन्तधावनपूर्वकम्
On the bright third day of Caitra, after brushing the teeth,
सकुंकुमं सतांबूलं सिन्दूरं रक्तवाससी
With saffron, betel, vermilion, and red garments,
विधवा याति मार्गेण कुमारी तु यदृच्छया 4.28.
The widow proceeds by the prescribed path, while the maiden acts as she wishes.
नेत्रपट्टपटीवस्त्रैर्वस्त्रमण्डपिकां शुभाम्
