धनं धान्यं हिरण्यं च दासीदासादिकं वहु
Wealth, grain, gold, and many female and male servants,
उमामहेश्वरं नाम अप्सरोभिः पुरा कृतम्
The vow called Umā-Maheśvara was formerly established by the celestial nymphs,
रूपिण्या रंभया चैव सीतयाऽहल्यया तथा
By Rūpiṇī, Rambhā, as well as Sītā and Ahalyā,
एताभिश्चरितं पार्थ व्रतं सर्वव्रतोत्तमम्
This supreme vow of all vows, O Pārtha, was observed by these women.
मर्त्यलोके स्त्रियो याश्च दुर्भगारूपवर्जिताः
In the mortal world, women who are deprived of fortune or beauty,
तासां हितार्थं पार्वत्या उमामहेश्वरं व्रतम्
For the welfare of such women, Pārvatī established the Umā-Maheśvara vow.
पूर्वं मार्गशिरे मासि नारी धर्मपरायणा 4.23.
In the month of Mārgaśīrṣa, a woman devoted to righteousness should, after bathing,
स्नात्वा संपूज्य ललितां हरकायार्धवासिनीम् कृत्वा देवीस्तर्पयित्वा इदं वाक्यमुदीरयेत्
Having bathed, she should worship Lalitā, who shares half the body of Hara; having satisfied the goddess, she should recite this statement:
नमो नमस्ते देवेश उमादेहार्द्धधारक
"Salutations, salutations to you, Lord of the gods, bearer of half of Umā's body!"
हृदि कृत्वा शिवं देवीं जपेद्यावद्गृहं गता
Having placed Śiva and the goddess in her heart, she should recite until she reaches her home.
वामपार्श्वे उमां देवीं दक्षिणे तु महेश्वरम् नैवेद्यं तु यथाशक्ति घृतपक्वं निवेदयेत्
She should place the goddess Umā on the left side and Maheśvara on the right, and offer as food, according to her ability, something cooked with ghee.
कारयेद्वैश्वदेवं तु तिलाज्येन सुसंस्कृतम्
She should perform the Vaiśvadeva offering, well prepared with sesame and clarified butter.
एवं द्वादशमासांस्तु पूजयित्वा महेश्वरम्
In this way, having worshipped Maheśvara for twelve months,
शिवं रूप्यमयं कृत्वा उमां हैममयीं तथा
She should make an image of Śiva in silver and likewise Umā in gold.
चन्दनेन शिवं चर्च्य कुंकुमेन च पार्वतीम्
She should anoint Śiva with sandalwood and Pārvatī with saffron.
वेष्टयेच्छुक्लवस्त्रेण शिवं रक्तेन पार्वतीम्
She should wrap Śiva in a white garment and Pārvatī in a red one.
भोजयेच्छिवभक्तांश्च ब्राह्मणान्वेदपारगान् 4.23.
She should feed devotees of Śiva and Brāhmaṇas learned in the Vedas.
ततः प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य इदमुच्चारयेद्बुधः व्रतेनानेन सुप्रीतौ भवेतां मम सर्वदा
Then, having circumambulated, the wise one should recite this: 'By this vow, may you both always be well pleased with me.'
एवमुक्त्वा जितक्रोधे ब्राह्मणे वेदपारगे
Having spoken thus to the Brahmin, who had conquered anger and was learned in the Vedas,
इदं कृत्वा व्रतं नारी महेशार्पितमानसा
A woman who performs this vow with her mind dedicated to Mahesha,
शिवलोके वसेत्तावद्यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्द्दश
Dwells in the realm of Shiva as long as the fourteen Indras exist.
यदा मानुष्यमायाति जायते विमले कुले
When she is born again as a human, she takes birth in a pure family,
धनधान्यसमायुक्ते सुवर्णमणिमंडिते
Endowed with wealth and grain, adorned with gold and jewels.
वियोगं नैव सा पश्येद्भर्तृमित्रसुतादिकैः
She will not experience separation from her husband, friends, sons, or others.
हैमीमुमां रजतपिण्डमयं महेशं रौप्ये सुरूपवृषभे च समास्थितौ तौ
She and her husband will be established upon a beautiful silver bull, with Mahesha made of gold or silver before them.
रम्भातृतीयाव्रतवर्णनम् पुत्रसौभाग्यफलदां सर्वामयनिवारिणीम्
Now, the description of the Rambha-Tritiya vow, which grants sons, good fortune, and removes all diseases.
सर्वदुष्टहरां पुण्यां सर्वसौख्यप्रदां तथा
It destroys all evils, is meritorious, and bestows all happiness.
शंकरेण पुरा प्रोक्ता पार्वत्याः प्रियकाम्यया
It was formerly spoken by Shankara, desiring the happiness of Parvati.
मार्गशीर्षे शुभे मासि तृती यायां नराधिप उपवासस्य नियमं गृह्णीयाद्भक्तिभाविता
In the auspicious month of Margashirsha, on the third lunar day, O king, one should undertake the vow of fasting with devotion.
देवि संवत्सरं यावत्तृतीयायामुपो षिता तदविघ्नेन मे यातु प्रसादात्तव पार्वति
O Devi, as long as a year, one should observe the Tritiya fast; may it proceed without obstacles by your grace, O Parvati.
