एकदा मृगयाकेलिलोलुपः स महीपतिः
Once, that king, eager for the sport of hunting, set out.
चैत्रशुक्लनवम्यां तु न कृतं जीवघातनम्
But on the ninth day of the bright half of Caitra, no killing of living beings was done.
वाल्मीकेश्च कुटीमध्ये रात्रौ जागरणं कृतम्
And in the hut of Vālmīki, a vigil was kept at night.
श्रुता राममयी गाथा तस्य पुण्यप्रभावतः
A song about Rāma was heard, due to the power of his merit.
कल्पवृक्षस्य वै पूजा कृता तेन महात्मना
Worship of the wish-fulfilling tree was performed by that great soul.
स तमाह महावृक्ष मदीयं नगरं शुभम्
That great tree said to him, 'My auspicious city—'
इत्युक्ते सति वृक्षेण नगरं भूपतेः समम्
When the tree had spoken thus, the city became one with the king.
सर्वे ते राजतुल्याश्च कल्पवृक्षप्रसादतः
All of them, by the grace of the wish-fulfilling tree, became equal to kings.
मलयाद्रौ महारम्ये तेपतुर्बहुलं तपः
On the splendid Malayā mountain, they performed intense austerities.
कमलाक्षीति विख्याता कन्या च शिवमंदिरे 3.2.15.
A maiden named Kamalākṣī, renowned, was in the temple of Śiva.
जीमूतवाहनश्चैव पूजार्थे मंदिरं ययौ
Jīmūtavāhana also went to the temple for worship.
तस्या दर्शनमात्रेण कामबाणेन पीडितः
Merely by seeing her, he was afflicted by the arrows of desire.
जीमूतवाहन उवाच मदनाय नमस्तुभ्यं कृष्णपुत्राय ते नमः
Jīmūtavāhana said: 'Salutations to Madana, salutations to you, son of Kṛṣṇa.'
पंचबाणाय कामाय प्रद्युम्नाय नमोनमः
Repeated salutations to Kāma, the five-arrowed one, to Pradyumna.
तदा प्रसन्नो भगवान्मकरध्वजदेवता
Then the blessed deity Makaradhvaja was pleased.
विश्वावसुरिति ख्यातस्तस्य भूपस्य वै सुतः
Viśvāvasu, so renowned, was the son of that king.
नरं नारायणं नत्वा गरुडोत्तुंगमाययौ
Having bowed to Nara and Nārāyaṇa, he came, riding upon Garuḍa.
रुरोद बहुधा तत्र यत्र जीमूतवाहनः
There, where Jīmūtavāhana was, he wept greatly in many ways.
वृद्धामाश्वास्य पप्रच्छ केनेदं दुःखमागतम्
After consoling the old woman, he asked, 'By whom has this sorrow come?'
तद्वियोगेन दुःखार्ता विलपामि महाकुला 3.2.15.
Afflicted by separation from him, I, of noble lineage, lament.
गरुडोऽपि गृहीत्वा तं नभोमार्गमुपागमत्
Garuḍa also, having taken him, proceeded along the path of the sky.
कमलाक्षी तु वियति स्थितं गरुडभक्षितम्
But Kamalākṣī saw him, devoured by Garuḍa, standing in the sky.
तदा तु गरुडस्त्रस्तस्तत्रागत्य त्वरान्वितः
Then Garuḍa, frightened, came there quickly.
स होवाच प्रभो मेद्य वचः शृणु महामते
He said: 'O Lord, listen to my words, O wise one.'
तस्याः पुत्रस्य रक्षार्थं संप्राप्तोऽहं तवांतिकम्
I have come into your presence for the protection of her son.
तद्व्यालस्यैव दुःखेन दुःखितः शत्रुमाप्तवान्
Afflicted by the sorrow of that serpent, he has obtained an enemy.
संत्यज्य मानुषं दिव्यं कुर्वाहारं महामते
O wise one, abandoning human food, take up divine nourishment.
जीमूतवाहनायैव विद्याधरसुताय च
For Jīmūtavāhana and also for the daughter of the Vidyādharas.
त्वं तु विद्याधरपुरे प्राप्य राज्यं महोत्तमम्
But you, having attained the most excellent kingdom in the city of the Vidyādharas,
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्दधौ देवः स पित्रा राज्यमाप्तवान् 3.2.15.
Having spoken thus, the god vanished; he obtained the kingdom from his father.
