आचम्य खान्युपालभ्य स्मृत्वा सोमं स्वपेद्भुवि
After sipping water, tasting the foods, and remembering Soma, one should sleep on the ground.
मुन्यन्नं तु तृतीयायां चतुर्थ्यां गोरसोत्तरम् ।। घृताक्ताः सगुणाः शस्ताः पञ्चम्यां कृशरास्सदा
On the third day, eat sage's food; on the fourth, milk products; always, on the fifth, gruel mixed with ghee and spices is best.
शस्ता भद्रेषु सर्वेषु सदा श्यामाकतण्डुलाः
Millets and black rice are always wholesome in all auspicious occasions.
प्रातः स्नानं ततः कृत्वा संतर्ज्य पितृदेवताः
In the morning, after bathing, one should honor the ancestors and deities.
भृत्यबन्धुजनैः सार्द्धं पश्चाद्भुञ्जीत कामतः
Afterwards, one may eat as desired, together with servants, relatives, and family.
करोत्येतन्नरो भक्त्या वर्षमेकममत्सरी
A person who performs this with devotion, free from envy, for one year—
एतत्करोति या कन्या शुभं प्राप्नोति सा पतिम्
Any maiden who does this attains an auspicious husband.
राज्यार्थी लभते राज्यं धनार्थी लभते धनम्
One seeking a kingdom obtains a kingdom; one seeking wealth obtains wealth.
योषित्कुलाकुलविवाहमनोरमाणि शय्यान्नयानशयनासनशोभितानि 4.13.
Marriage arrangements among noble families, delightful beds, vehicles, seats, and adornments for women are achieved.
द्वितीयाव्रतमाहात्म्यवर्णनम् मासैश्चतुर्भिश्चत्वारः प्रावृट्छुक्लाः क्लमापहाः
The greatness of the second vow is described: Four bright fortnights of the rainy season remove fatigue.
गोपिताश्च सदा लोके न प्रोक्ताश्च मया क्वचित्
These are always concealed in the world and have never been spoken of by me anywhere.
एका तु श्रावणे मासि अन्या भाद्रपदे तथा
One occurs in the month of Śrāvaṇa, another likewise in Bhādrapada.
श्रावणे कलुषा नाम प्रोष्ठपादे च गीर्मला
In Śrāvaṇa it is called Kaluṣā, and in Proṣṭhapāda it is called Gīrmalā.
कस्मात्सा कलुषा प्रोक्ता कस्मात्सा गीर्मला मता । कस्मात्सा प्रेतसंचारा कस्माद्याम्या प्रकीर्तिता
Why is it called Kaluṣā? Why is it considered Gīrmalā? Why is it associated with ghosts? Why is it called Yāmī?
ब्रह्महत्यापनोदार्थमश्वमेधे प्रवर्तिते
It was established in the horse sacrifice for the removal of the sin of killing a Brahmin.
क्रोधादिन्द्रेण वजेण ब्रह्महत्या निषूदिता
Out of anger, Indra struck with the thunderbolt and destroyed the sin of Brahmin-killing.
नार्यां ब्रह्महने वह्नौ संविभज्य यथाक्रमम्
To a woman, to a Brahmin, and into fire, one should distribute (offerings) in due order.
नारीवृक्षनदीभूमिवह्निब्रह्महनेष्वथ
To a woman, to a tree, to a river, to the earth, to fire, and to a Brahmin, then—
मधुकैटभयो रक्ते पुरा मग्नेति मेदिनी 4.14.
In ancient times, the earth became red with the blood of Madhu and Kaitabha.
नद्यः पूरमलाः सर्वा वह्नेर्धूमशिखा मलः
All rivers became impure; the smoke and flame of fire are impure.
गीर्गिरा भारती वाणी वाचा मेधा सरस्वती
Speech, language, voice, utterance, intelligence, and Sarasvati—
देवर्षिपितृधर्माणां निंदका नास्तिकाः शठाः
Those who revile the gods, sages, ancestors, and righteousness are deniers and deceitful.
अनध्यायेषु शास्त्राणि पाठयंति पठंति च
They recite and teach scriptures during prohibited times.
प्रेतास्तु पितरः प्रोक्तास्तेषां तस्यां तु संचरः
The departed are called ancestors; their movement is indeed there.
अग्निष्वात्ता बर्हिषद आज्यपाः सोमपास्तथा
The Agnisvattas, Barhishads, Ajyapas, and Somapas likewise—
पुत्रैः पौत्रैश्च दौहित्रैः स्वधामंत्रैः सुपूजिताः
When duly honored by sons, grandsons, and daughter's sons with svadha-mantras—
कार्तिके शुक्लपक्षस्य द्वितीयायां युधिष्ठिर
On the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartika, O Yudhishthira—
द्वितीयायां महोत्सर्गे नारकीयाश्च तर्पिताः भ्रामिता नर्तितास्तुष्टाः स्थिताः सर्वे यदृच्छया
On the second day, at the great offering, even those in hell are satisfied, whirled, made to dance, pleased, and remain as they wish.
तेषां महोत्सवो वृत्तो यमराष्ट्रे सुखावहः 4.14.
For them, a great festival occurs in Yama's realm, bringing happiness.
अस्यां निजगृहे पार्थ न भोक्तव्यमतो बुधैः
On this day, O Partha, the wise should not eat in their own house.
