इति ते कथितं देव यथाशास्त्रेषु भाषितम्
Thus, O god, it has been told to you as spoken in the scriptures.
इति श्रुत्वा स होवाच स पुत्रो मदनालसः 3.2.14.
Having heard this, the son, Madanālasa, spoke.
स स्नात्वा बहुला ष्टम्यां तत्पुण्येन नृपोत्तम
He bathed on the Bahulā aṣṭamī, O best of kings, with that merit.
स्मृत्वा स हृदि गोविंदं तुष्टाव श्लक्ष्णया गिरा
Remembering Govinda in his heart, he praised him with gentle words.
त्वयैकेन लीलार्थतो देवदेव प्रियाराधया सार्द्धमेतद्धि गुप्तम्
By you alone, for the sake of play, O god of gods, together with your beloved, this has been kept secret.
जगत्यन्तकाले त्वया कालमूर्त्या जगत्संहृतं वै नमस्तेनमस्ते
At the end of the world, by you as the form of Time, the world is indeed dissolved; I bow, I bow.
इति स्तोत्रप्रभावेन देवदेवेन मोचिता
By the power of this hymn, he was liberated by the god of gods.
रमणीं स्वां समालिंग्य ननन्द मुदितो नृप सुदेवं स समाहूय स्वां स्वसारं ददौ मुदा
Embracing his own beloved, the joyful king rejoiced; he summoned Sudeva and gladly gave his own sister.
सुदेवस्तस्य भगिनीं क्षत्रियस्य मदातुराम्
Sudeva took his sister, intoxicated with passion, from the Kṣatriya.
इति ते कथितं भूप चरित्रं तस्य धीमतः
Thus, O king, the conduct of that wise one has been told to you.
पुनराख्यानकं विप्र वर्णयामास सुन्दरम्
Once again, O Brahmin, he narrated a beautiful story.
कान्यकुज्जे महाराज ब्राह्मणो दानशीलकः प्रतिग्रहेण यद्द्रव्यं तेन दानमचीकरत्
In Kānyakubja, O great king, there was a Brahmin devoted to charity, who gave away in gifts whatever wealth he received.
कदाचित्तु शरत्काले नवदुर्गाव्रतं ह्यभूत्
Once, in the autumn season, the vow of Navadurga was observed.
किं कर्तव्यं मया चाद्य येन द्रव्ययुतो ह्यहम्
He thought, 'What should I do today so that I may be endowed with wealth?'
इति शोकसमायुक्तस्तदा देवीप्रसादतः
Thus, filled with sorrow, at that time, by the grace of the Goddess—
निराहारव्रतं तेन कृतं तु नवमाह्निकम्
He performed a nine-day fast as a vow without taking food.
जीमूतकेतुरिति च सोभूद्विद्याधराधिपः
There was a lord of the Vidyādharas named Jīmūtaketu.
उवास कतिचिद्वर्षान्दिव्य भोगप्रभोगवान्
He lived for some years, enjoying divine pleasures and enjoyments.
तेन वृक्षप्रभावेन जातः पुत्रो महोत्तमः
By the power of that tree, a most excellent son was born to him.
स वै पूर्वभवे राजन्मध्यदेशे महोत्तमे 3.2.15.
O king, in a previous birth, he was in the most excellent Madhyadeśa.
एकदा मृगयाकेलिलोलुपः स महीपतिः
Once, that king, eager for the sport of hunting, set out.
चैत्रशुक्लनवम्यां तु न कृतं जीवघातनम्
But on the ninth day of the bright half of Caitra, no killing of living beings was done.
वाल्मीकेश्च कुटीमध्ये रात्रौ जागरणं कृतम्
And in the hut of Vālmīki, a vigil was kept at night.
श्रुता राममयी गाथा तस्य पुण्यप्रभावतः
A song about Rāma was heard, due to the power of his merit.
कल्पवृक्षस्य वै पूजा कृता तेन महात्मना
Worship of the wish-fulfilling tree was performed by that great soul.
स तमाह महावृक्ष मदीयं नगरं शुभम्
That great tree said to him, 'My auspicious city—'
इत्युक्ते सति वृक्षेण नगरं भूपतेः समम्
When the tree had spoken thus, the city became one with the king.
सर्वे ते राजतुल्याश्च कल्पवृक्षप्रसादतः
All of them, by the grace of the wish-fulfilling tree, became equal to kings.
मलयाद्रौ महारम्ये तेपतुर्बहुलं तपः
On the splendid Malayā mountain, they performed intense austerities.
कमलाक्षीति विख्याता कन्या च शिवमंदिरे 3.2.15.
A maiden named Kamalākṣī, renowned, was in the temple of Śiva.
