आपीड्यंते जिह्वामूले निबध्य शृंखलाः पुनः
Chains are fastened at the root of their tongues, and they are pressed again.
स्निग्धे च वृषणे नद्धे लोहभारद्वयं पुनः
Heavy iron weights are tied to their oily testicles.
ततः स्वमांसमुत्कृत्य तिलमात्रप्रमाणतः
Then, their own flesh is cut off in pieces the size of sesame seeds.
यदा निर्मांसतां प्राप्ताः कालेन महता पुनः
When, after a long time, they have become devoid of flesh,
सिच्यंते वर्षधाराभिः शोष्यंते वायुना पुनः
They are drenched with streams of water, or dried again by the wind.
पश्चात्ते वह्निना भूयो दूरस्थेन शनैः शनैः
Afterwards, they are slowly and repeatedly burned by fire from a distance.
भृशं बुभुक्षया पीडा मूर्च्छयातिपिपासया
They are afflicted with intense hunger, pain, fainting, and extreme thirst.
एवमादिमहाघोरा यातनाः पापकारिणः 4.6.
In this way, such extremely terrible torments befall the doers of evil.
प्रत्येकं यातनाश्चित्राः सर्वेषु नरकेषु च
Each one endures diverse and remarkable torments in all the hells.
एते च विविधैर्घोरैर्यात्यमानाश्च कर्मभिः
And these beings, driven by their various terrible deeds, are led through them.
महाघोराभिघोराख्या कालाग्निसदृशोपमाः
They are called extremely dreadful and supremely terrifying, comparable to the fire of time.
ततस्तेनात्र कथिताः पापा गच्छंति तान्स्वयम्
Therefore, here it is said that sinners themselves go to those places.
एकाकी दह्यते तेन न च पश्यति तानि सः
Alone, he is burned there, and he does not see those things.
तत्किमन्योपघातार्थं मूढ पापं कृतं त्वया
So, deluded one, for what purpose have you committed sin, causing harm to another?
कियंतं केन पापेन कालमत्रायते नरः पापात्सर्वेषु पच्यंते नरकेष्वामहाक्षयात्
For how long, and by what sin, does a man remain here? All are cooked in hell by their sins, until the great destruction.
महापातकिनश्चापि सर्वेषु नरकेष्विह
And even those guilty of great sins are in all these hells here.
महापातकिनश्चान्ये नरकार्णवकोटिषु
Other great sinners are in the millions of ocean-like hells.
उपपातकिनश्चापि तदर्थं यांति मानवाः 4.6.
And those guilty of secondary sins also go there for that reason.
तस्मात्पापं न कुर्वीत चंचले जीविते सति
Therefore, one should not commit sin while life is unstable.
यः करोति नरः पापं तस्यात्मा ध्रुवमप्रियः
The man who commits sin, his own self surely becomes unpleasant to him.
कथं ते पापनिरता नरा रात्रिषु शेरते
How do those men, devoted to sin, sleep at night?
एवं क्लिष्टविशुद्धाश्च सावशेषेण कर्मणा स्थावरा विविधाकारास्तृणगुल्मादिभेदतः
Thus, afflicted and purified by their remaining actions, they are born as immobile beings of various forms, distinguished as grass, shrubs, and so on.
तत्रानुभूय दुःखानि जायंते कीटयोनिषु
There, after experiencing sufferings, they are born in insect wombs.
संश्लिष्टाः पक्षिभावेन भवंति मृगजादिषु
They are joined in the state of birds, and become among animals and the like.
क्रमाद्गोयोनिमासाद्य जायन्ते मानवाः पुनः कालांतरवशाद्यांति मानुष्यमतिदुर्लभम्
Gradually, after attaining the cow species, they are born again as humans; by the force of time, they reach human birth, which is extremely rare.
व्युत्क्रमेणापि मानुष्यं प्राप्यते पुण्यगोचरात्
Even by reversal, human birth is attained through the sphere of merit.
मानुष्यं यः समासाद्य स्वर्गमोक्षप्रसाधकम्
Whoever attains a human birth, which is the means to heaven and liberation,
देवासुराणां सर्वेषां मानुष्यमतिदुर्लभम् 4.6.
For all the gods and demons, a human birth is exceedingly rare.
स्वर्गापवर्गलाभाय यदि नास्ति समुद्यतः
If one is not intent on attaining heaven or liberation,
धर्ममूलेन मानुष्यं लब्ध्वा सर्वार्थसाधकम्
Having gained a human birth, which accomplishes all aims through the foundation of dharma,
