क्वणंत्युदूखले सास्राः प्रक्षिप्यंते शिलासु च
They wail with tears in mortars and are thrown onto stones.
कृमिभिर्भिन्नसर्वांगाः शतशो जर्जरीकृताः
Their whole bodies are pierced by worms, made feeble by the hundreds.
महाज्वाले च नरके पापाः फूत्कारयंति च
In the great flames of hell, the wicked cry out loudly.
पृष्ठे चानीय जंघे द्वे विन्यस्ते स्कन्धयोः स्थिते बद्ध्वा परस्परं सर्वं सुदृढं गाढरज्जुभि.
Brought to the back, with both legs placed, held at the shoulders, all are tightly bound together with strong, firm ropes.
पीडयंति सुसंरब्धा भ्रमरास्तीक्ष्णलोहजाः
Fierce bees made of sharp iron torment them intensely.
पापानां नरके पुंसां घृष्यते चंदनं यथा
In the hell of the wicked, men are ground like sandalwood.
पिंडबंधो स्मृतो याम्यो महाज्वालेषु यातनाः करीषरूक्षवह्नौ च पच्यंते न म्रियंति च
This is called the Yama bondage; in the great flames they are tormented, cooked in fires rough with dung, yet do not die.
सुतीक्ष्णक्षारतोयेन शर्करासु शिलासु च 4.6.
With extremely caustic water, on gravel and stones—
शरीराभ्यन्तरगतैः प्रभूतैः कृमिभिर्नराः
Men are filled within their bodies by multitudes of worms.
कृमीणां निचये क्षिप्ताः पूतिमांसस्य राशिषु
They are thrown into heaps of worms, into piles of rotten flesh.
सुतप्तवज्रलेपेन शरीरमनुलिप्यते
Their bodies are smeared with a coating of burning-hot diamond dust.
वदनांते प्रविन्यस्तं सुतप्तायोमयं गुडम्
At the mouth’s end, a lump of burning-hot iron is placed.
ये शिवायतनारामवापीकूपमठांग णात्
Those who seize Shiva’s temples, gardens, ponds, wells, or monasteries—
व्यायामोद्वर्तनाभ्यंगस्नानमापानभोजनम्
Who use them for exercise, massage, bathing, drinking, or eating—
ते बाधैर्विविधैर्घोरैरिक्षुयन्त्रादिपीडनैः
They are tormented by various dreadful afflictions, such as crushing by sugarcane presses and other tortures.
ये शृण्वंति गुरोर्निंदां तेषां कर्णः प्रपूर्य्यते
Those who listen to slander of the guru—their ears are filled up.
त्रपुसीसारकूटाद्यैः क्षारेण जतुना पुनः अनुक्रमेण सर्वेषु भवंत्येताः समंततः
With lead, iron filings, alkali, and resin, in succession, all their orifices are filled completely.
सर्वेंद्रियाणामप्येवं क्रमात्पापेन यातनाः 4.6.
In this way, by sin, all the senses are subjected to torment in turn.
स्पर्शलोभेन ये मूढाः संस्पृशंति परस्त्रियम्
Those deluded by the desire of touch who touch another’s wife—
ततः क्षारादिभिः सर्वैः शरीरमनुलिप्यते
Their bodies are smeared with all kinds of alkalis and similar substances.
गुरोः कुर्वंति भ्रुकुटिं क्रूरं चक्षुश्च ये नराः
Those men who make a cruel frown or glare at the guru—
सूचीभिरग्निवर्णाभिस्तेषां नेत्रं प्रपूर्यते
Their eyes are filled with needles glowing like fire.
लोहकीलशतैस्तप्तैस्तज्जिह्वास्यं प्रपूर्यते
Their tongues and mouths are filled with hundreds of heated iron spikes.
ततः क्षारेण दीप्तेन तैलताम्रादिभिः क्रमात्
Then, in succession, with burning alkali, oil, and copper, they are tormented.
ये शिवारामपुष्पाणि लोभात्संगृह्य पाणिना
Those who, out of greed, gather flowers from Shiva’s gardens with their hands—
नासिका चातिबहुशस्ततः क्षारादिभिः पुनः
Their noses, repeatedly, are then smeared with alkalis and similar substances.
ये निंदंति महात्मानमाचार्यं धर्मदेशिकम्
Those who slander the great soul, the teacher, the instructor of dharma—
तेषामुरसि कंठे च जिह्वायां दंतसंधिषु 4.6.
In their chest, throat, tongue, and between the teeth—
अग्निवर्णाः सुतप्ताश्च त्रिशिखा लोहशंकवः
Glowing, well-heated, three-pointed iron spikes—
ततः क्षारेण तप्तेन ताम्रेण त्रपुणा पुनः
Then, again, with burning alkali, copper, and lead, they are tormented.
