पच्यंते मांसवच्चापि प्रदीप्तांगारराशिषु
They are cooked, like meat, on heaps of blazing coals.
तिलपिंडैरिवाक्रम्य घोरैः कर्मभिरात्मनः
Seized, as if by balls of sesame, by their own terrible deeds,
भिद्यंते चापि तल्पेषु लोहभ्राष्ट्रेष्वनेकधा
They are also broken apart on beds, many times, with iron pestles.
मिथ्यागमप्रवक्तुश्च द्विजिह्वस्य च निर्गता
For the one who speaks false scriptures, and for the double-tongued, these punishments arise.
निर्भर्त्सयंति ये क्रूरा मातरं पितरं गुरुम्
Those cruel ones who revile mother, father, or teacher,
ततः क्षारेण दीप्तेन ताम्रेण तु पुनःपुनः
Then, with caustic alkali and again and again with heated copper,
इतस्ततः पुनर्वक्त्रं भृशमापूर्य हन्यते
Here and there, their mouth is repeatedly filled and struck violently.
परिष्वजति चात्युग्रां प्रदीप्तां लोहशाल्मलीम् 4.6.
They are made to embrace the terrible, blazing iron Śālmalī tree.
दंतुरेणातिकूटेन क्रकचेन बलीयसा खाद्यते स्वानि मांसानि पायते शोणितं स्वकम्
With a very sharp saw, with powerful teeth, their own flesh is eaten, and they are made to drink their own blood.
अन्नं पानं न दत्तं यैर्मूढैर्नाप्यनुमोदितम्
By those fools who did not give food or drink, nor even approve of it,
असितालवने घोरे च्छिद्यंते खंडखंडशः संबाध्यमाना विवशाः क्लिश्यंते न म्रियंति वै
In the dreadful black salt plain, they are cut into pieces, bound tightly, helpless, tormented, yet do not die.
देहादुत्साद्यमांसानि भिद्यंतेऽस्थीनि मुद्गरैः
Their flesh is torn from their bodies, their bones are broken with clubs.
निरस्तास्ते निरुच्छ्वासास्तिष्ठंति नरके ध्रुवम्
Cast out, breathless, they remain in hell without doubt.
रौरवे रोदमानाश्च पीड्यन्ते विविधैः शरैः
In Raurava, as they weep, they are tormented by various arrows.
पदोरास्ये गुदे चैव पार्श्वे चोरसि मस्तके
On the feet, mouth, anus, sides, chest, and head—
सुतप्तवालुकायां च प्रलुठ्यन्ते पुनःपुनः
They are made to roll again and again on burning hot sand.
तेनतेनैव रूपेण हसन्ते पारदारिकम्
With that very same form, they mock the adulterer.
पूर्वाकारं च पुरुषं प्रज्वलंतं समंततः 4.6.
And the man, in his previous shape, is seen burning all around.
किं प्रधावसि वेगेन ते न मोक्षोऽस्ति सांप्रतम्
Why do you run swiftly? There is no liberation for you now.
लोहकुम्भे तथा क्षिप्ताः सविधानैः शनैःशनैः
They are cast into iron cauldrons, with proper measures, slowly and gradually.
क्वणंत्युदूखले सास्राः प्रक्षिप्यंते शिलासु च
They wail with tears in mortars and are thrown onto stones.
कृमिभिर्भिन्नसर्वांगाः शतशो जर्जरीकृताः
Their whole bodies are pierced by worms, made feeble by the hundreds.
महाज्वाले च नरके पापाः फूत्कारयंति च
In the great flames of hell, the wicked cry out loudly.
पृष्ठे चानीय जंघे द्वे विन्यस्ते स्कन्धयोः स्थिते बद्ध्वा परस्परं सर्वं सुदृढं गाढरज्जुभि.
Brought to the back, with both legs placed, held at the shoulders, all are tightly bound together with strong, firm ropes.
पीडयंति सुसंरब्धा भ्रमरास्तीक्ष्णलोहजाः
Fierce bees made of sharp iron torment them intensely.
पापानां नरके पुंसां घृष्यते चंदनं यथा
In the hell of the wicked, men are ground like sandalwood.
पिंडबंधो स्मृतो याम्यो महाज्वालेषु यातनाः करीषरूक्षवह्नौ च पच्यंते न म्रियंति च
This is called the Yama bondage; in the great flames they are tormented, cooked in fires rough with dung, yet do not die.
सुतीक्ष्णक्षारतोयेन शर्करासु शिलासु च 4.6.
With extremely caustic water, on gravel and stones—
शरीराभ्यन्तरगतैः प्रभूतैः कृमिभिर्नराः
Men are filled within their bodies by multitudes of worms.
कृमीणां निचये क्षिप्ताः पूतिमांसस्य राशिषु
They are thrown into heaps of worms, into piles of rotten flesh.
