In some places with great leeches, and again with pythons,
With herds of intoxicated elephants, maddened and destructive,
With great-horned buffaloes, camels, and maddened biting animals,
With a fierce wind mixed with thick dust,
Struck by a great shower of stones, without any shelter,
Pierced everywhere by a great shower of arrows,
Burned by a rain of red-hot embers, they proceed,
Terrified again and again by the dreadful roar of great clouds, and drenched by torrents of caustic water, they melt away,
By a great, sharp, and harsh cold wind,
Thus, on a terrible path, devoid of companions,
With great and unceasing exhaustion, and without any refuge,
All embodied beings who are deluded and do evil deeds are led along.
Alone, dependent on others, bereft of friends and relatives,
Becoming spirits of the dead, unclothed, with parched throats, lips, and palates,
Some are bound with chains, men lying on their backs with their feet up,
Again, others are face downward, dragged and greatly distressed,
With sharp goads at their foreheads, the embodied beings are pierced and pulled,
Bound behind by their arms and shoulders, and oppressed at the belly,
Hurled here and there by a half-moon-shaped hook at the neck,
Others are split open at the belly with burning chains,
With hands and feet cut off, ears, lips, and noses severed,
Assailed again and again with spears and arrows,
Struck repeatedly with mallets and iron rods,
Pierced with tridents, oozing pus and blood,
Begging for water and food, tormented by hunger,
Thus, those men who are devoid of charity and turn away depart in this manner,
In this way, having reached the city of Yama by a painful path,
There, Yama honors those who have performed virtuous deeds,
Blessed are you, great souls, doers of good for yourselves,
Ascending this celestial palace, adorned with the enjoyment of divine women,
