Especially in the city of Dharma, men give the gift of food.
But those who perform cruel deeds, who are sinful and devoid of giving—
Having crossed eighty-six thousand yojanas—
For men of virtuous deeds, it appears as if it is near.
With sharp thorns and covered with gravel,
In some places with deep mud, and with difficult pits,
Obstructed by riverbanks and cliffs, and mountains thick with trees,
In some places with uneven ditches, elsewhere with slippery clods of earth,
In some places covered by dense groves of bamboo, spread with many clusters,
In some places filled with hot water, elsewhere with fires of dung,
In some places with great leeches, and again with pythons,
With herds of intoxicated elephants, maddened and destructive,
With great-horned buffaloes, camels, and maddened biting animals,
With a fierce wind mixed with thick dust,
Struck by a great shower of stones, without any shelter,
Pierced everywhere by a great shower of arrows,
Burned by a rain of red-hot embers, they proceed,
Terrified again and again by the dreadful roar of great clouds, and drenched by torrents of caustic water, they melt away,
By a great, sharp, and harsh cold wind,
Thus, on a terrible path, devoid of companions,
With great and unceasing exhaustion, and without any refuge,
All embodied beings who are deluded and do evil deeds are led along.
Alone, dependent on others, bereft of friends and relatives,
Becoming spirits of the dead, unclothed, with parched throats, lips, and palates,
Some are bound with chains, men lying on their backs with their feet up,
Again, others are face downward, dragged and greatly distressed,
With sharp goads at their foreheads, the embodied beings are pierced and pulled,
Bound behind by their arms and shoulders, and oppressed at the belly,
Hurled here and there by a half-moon-shaped hook at the neck,
Others are split open at the belly with burning chains,
