यः स्वयं मिष्टमश्नाति विप्रायान्यत्प्रयच्छति
He who eats the best himself and gives something else to the Brahmin—
नियमान्स्वयमादाय ये त्यजंत्यजितेंद्रियाः
Those who, having taken vows themselves, abandon them with uncontrolled senses—
पीडयंत्यतिभारेण सक्षतान्वाहयंति च
They oppress with excessive burdens and also drive those who are wounded—
ये भग्नक्षतरोगार्तान्स्वगोरूपान्बुभुक्षया 4.5.
Those who, out of hunger, slaughter their own cows that are broken, wounded, diseased, or suffering—
वृषाणां वृषणान्येव पापिष्ठा गालयंति ये
Most sinful are those who castrate the bulls of bulls—
आश्रमं समनुप्राप्तं क्षुत्तृष्णाश्रमपीडितम्
One who, having reached the hermitage, is afflicted by hunger, thirst, and exhaustion—
अनाथं विकलं दीनं बालं वृद्धं कृशातुरम्
The orphan, the disabled, the poor, the child, the old, the emaciated and sick—
अजाविको माहिषिकः सामुद्रो वृषलीपतिः
A shepherd of goats, a buffalo-keeper, a fisherman, and the husband of a low-caste woman—
शिल्पिनः कारुका वैद्या हेमकारा नटा द्विजाः
Artisans, craftsmen, physicians, goldsmiths, actors, and twice-born men—
यश्चोदितमतिक्रम्य स्वेच्छया वा हरेत्करम्
And whoever, disregarding what is prescribed, seizes taxes at will—
उत्कोचकैरधिकृतैस्तस्करैश्च प्रपीड्यते
He who is oppressed by bribe-takers, officials, and thieves—
ये द्विजाः प्रतिगृह्णंति नृपस्यान्यायवर्तिनः
Those twice-born who accept gifts from a king who acts unrighteously—
पारदारिकचौराणां यत्पापं पार्थिवस्य तत्
The sin of adulterers and thieves falls upon the king—
अचौरं चौरवत्पश्येच्चोरं वाऽचौररूपवत् 4.5.
One should regard the innocent as a thief, and the thief as if he were innocent—
घृततैलान्नपानानि मधुमांससुरासवम्
Ghee, oil, food, drink, honey, meat, and spirituous liquor—
तृणं काष्ठं पुष्पपत्रमौषधं कांस्यभाजनम्
Grass, wood, flowers, leaves, herbs, and bronze vessels—
ताम्रं सीसं त्रपुं काचं शंखाद्यं च जलोद्भवम्
Copper, lead, tin, glass, conch, and other things produced from water—
ऊर्णाकार्पासकौशेयभंगपट्टोद्भवानि च
Wool, cotton, silk, hemp, linen, and things produced from them—
एवमादीनि चान्यानि द्रव्याणि विविधानि च
And likewise, there are other various kinds of objects.
यद्वा तद्वा परद्रव्यमपि सर्षपमात्रकम्
Whether it is this or that, even another's property as small as a mustard seed—
एवमाद्यै्र्नरः पापैरुत्क्रांतेः समनंतरम्
By such sins as these, immediately after departing from the body,
यमलोकं व्रजेत्तेन शरीरेण यमाज्ञया
A person goes to the realm of Yama in that very body, by the command of Yama.
तिर्यङ्मानुषदेहानामधर्मनिरतात्मनाम्
Among the bodies of animals and humans, for those whose minds are engaged in unrighteousness,
विनयाचारयुक्तानां प्रमादात्स्खलितात्मनाम् 4.5.
For those who are disciplined and well-behaved, but who have erred due to negligence,
पारदारिकचौराणामन्यायव्यवहारिणाम्
For those who commit adultery, theft, or act unjustly,
तस्मात्कृतस्य पापस्य प्रायश्चित्तं समाचरेत्
Therefore, one should perform atonement for the sin committed.
यः करोति स्वयं कर्म कारयेद्वापि मोद येत्
Whoever does an act himself, causes it to be done, or approves of it,
इति संक्षेपतः प्रोक्ताः पापभेदाः ससाधनाः
Thus, in brief, the types of sin along with their means have been described.
वाक्कायचित्तजनितैर्बहुभेदभिन्नैः कृत्यैः शुभाशुभफलोदयहेतुभूतैः
By actions arising from speech, body, and mind, of many kinds and forms, which are the causes of the arising of good and bad results—
शुभाशुभफलनिर्देशवर्णनम् श्रीकृष्ण उवाच संत्रासजननं घोरं विवशाः सर्वदेहिनः
Description of the results of good and bad actions.
