महापातकतुल्यानि पापान्युक्तानि यानि तु
These acts are declared to be sins equal to the great crimes.
द्विजार्थं च प्रतिज्ञाय न प्रयच्छति यः पुनः
And whoever, having promised something to a Brahmin, does not give it—
द्विजद्रव्यापहरणं मर्यादाया व्यतिक्रमः
The theft of a Brahmin's property, and the transgression of established boundaries—
अत्यंतविषयासक्तिः कार्पण्यं श्रेष्ठमत्सरः
Excessive attachment to sense pleasures, miserliness, and extreme envy—
परिवित्तिः परीवेत्ता यया च परिविद्यते 4.5.
Adultery, the adulterer, and the one with whom adultery is committed—
पुत्रमित्रकलत्राणामभावे स्वामिनस्तथा
In the absence of a son, friend, wife, or likewise the master—
भंगश्च धर्मकृत्यानां सहायानां विनाशनम्
The destruction of religious acts, and the ruin of companions—
स्वभृत्यपरिवर्गस्य पशुधान्यधनस्य च
Of one's own servants, dependents, cattle, grain, and wealth—
गवां क्षत्रियवेश्यानां स्त्रीशूद्राणां विशेषतः तीर्थयात्रोपवासानां व्रतायतनकर्मणाम्
Especially the cows, Kshatriyas, courtesans, women, and Shudras, as well as pilgrimage, fasting, and acts of vow and worship—
स्त्रीधनान्युपजीवंति स्त्रीभिरत्यंतनिर्जिताः
Those who live off women's wealth, being utterly subdued by women—
ऋणानामप्रदानं च धान्यवृद्ध्युपजीविनाम्
The non-repayment of debts by those who live off the increase of grain—
विषमारणमंत्राणां प्रयोगो मूलकर्मणाम्
The use of poisonous spells and root-based sorcery—
जिह्वासमुपभोगार्थं यस्यारम्भः स्वकर्मसु
One whose actions are undertaken solely for the enjoyment of the tongue—
व्रात्यता व्रतसंत्यागः सर्वाहारनिषेवणम्
Becoming an outcaste, abandoning vows, and consuming all kinds of food—
देवाग्निसाधुसाध्वीनां निंदा गोब्राह्मणस्य च। प्रत्यक्षं वा परोक्षं वा राज्ञां मण्डलिकामपि 4.5.
Speaking ill of the gods, fire, the virtuous, chaste women, cows, or Brahmins, whether openly or secretly, or even of kings and local rulers—
पर्वकाले दिवा चैव वियोनौ पशुयोनिषु
At sacred times or during the day, in the sky, or among animal species—
स्त्रीपुत्रमित्रसंप्रीते ग्रासान्नच्छेदकाश्च ये
Those who deprive wives, sons, or friends of their share of food—
भेत्ता तडागचक्राणां संक्रमाणां रथस्य च
One who breaks the banks of ponds, the wheels of vehicles, or bridges—
इत्येतैस्ते नराः पापैरुपपातकिनः स्मृताः
All these people are considered minor sinners by these acts—
ये गोब्राह्मणकन्यानां स्वामिमित्रतपस्विनाम्
Those who harm cows, Brahmin girls, masters, friends, or ascetics—
परश्रिया ये तप्यंते ये परद्रव्यसूचकाः
Those who are distressed by another's wealth, or who reveal the property of others—
द्विजाय दुःखं यः कुर्यात्प्रकारैर्बहुभिः सदा
Whoever causes suffering to a twice-born by various means, always—
ये पानाभिरताः क्रूरा ये च हिंसाप्रिया नराः
Those who are devoted to drinking, who are cruel, or who delight in violence—
गोष्ठाग्निजलरथ्यासु तरुच्छायामठेषु च
In cow pens, near fire, water, roads, under the shade of trees, or in rest houses—
मद्यपानरता नित्यं गानवाद्यरता नराः 4.5.
Those who are always addicted to drinking liquor, or to singing and playing instruments—
वंशेषु काशकाष्ठैश्च शुभैः शंकुभिरेव वा
With bamboo, reeds, fine wood, or even with sharp stakes—
कूटशासनहर्तारः कूटकर्मक्रियारताः
Those who forge documents, or are devoted to fraudulent deeds—
धनुषां शल्यशस्त्राणां यः कर्ता यश्च विक्रयी
Whoever makes or sells bows, arrows, or weapons—
मिथ्या प्रवदतो वाक्यमाकर्णयति यः शनैः
Whoever quietly listens to the false words spoken by another—
ये भार्यापुत्रमित्राणि बालवृद्धकृशातुरान्
Those who harm wives, sons, friends, children, the elderly, the emaciated, or the sick—
