अमी प्राघूर्णकाः प्राप्ता भक्तच्छेदे च मे गृहे
These restless ones have arrived, and there is a shortage of food in my house.
प्रदानकाले कन्यायाः कीदृशश्च वरो भवेत् 4.4.
At the time of giving away a daughter, what sort of groom will there be?
कुटुंबचिंताकुलितस्य पुंसः श्रुतं च शीलं च गुणाश्च सर्वे
For a man troubled by concern for his household, learning, character, and all virtues.
राज्येपि च महद्दुःखं संधिविग्रहचिंतया
Even in rulership, there is great suffering from anxiety over alliances and conflicts.
सजातीयाद्वधः प्रायः सर्वेषामेव देहिनाम्
Among all embodied beings, killing by one's own kind is common.
नाप्रधृष्यबलः कश्चिन्नृपः ख्यातोस्ति भूतले
No king on earth is known to possess irresistible strength.
आ जन्मनः प्रभृति दुःख मयं शरीरं कर्मात्मकं तव मया कथितं नरेन्द्र
O King, from birth itself, the body is full of suffering and is governed by karma, as I have explained to you.
पापभेदाख्यानवर्णनम् नरकार्णवघोरेषु यातना पापमुच्यते
In the dreadful ocean of hells, the torments are called sin.
अधर्मभेदा विज्ञेयाश्चित्तवृत्तिप्रभेदतः
The various forms of unrighteousness are to be understood according to the diversity of mental tendencies.
तत्र ये पापनिचयाः स्थूला नरकहेतवः
Among these, those gross accumulations of sin are the causes of hell.
परस्त्रीष्वथ संकल्पश्चेतसानिष्टचिंतनम्
The intention toward another's wife, and thinking evil thoughts in the mind—
अनिबद्धप्रलापित्वमसत्यं चाप्रियं च यत्
Unrestrained prattling, falsehood, and whatever is unpleasant—
अभक्ष्यभक्षणं हिंसा मिथ्या कामस्य सेवनम्
Eating what should not be eaten, violence, and indulging in false desire—
इत्येतद्द्वादशविधं कर्म प्रोक्तं ससाधनम् ।। तेषां भेदं पुनर्वच्मि येषां फलमनंतकम् )। ७ ' ये द्विषंति महादेवं संसारार्णवतारणम्
Thus, these twelvefold actions, along with their means, are declared. Now I will again describe the distinctions among them, whose fruits are endless. Those who hate Mahadeva, the deliverer from the ocean of existence—
महापातकिनश्चैते तत्संसर्गी च पंचमः
These are great sinners, and the one who associates with them is the fifth.
क्रोधाद्द्वेषाद्भयाल्लोभाद्ब्राह्मणं विशसंति ये । 4.5.
Those who, out of anger, hatred, fear, or greed, kill a Brahmin—
ब्राह्मणं च समाहूय याचमानमकिञ्चनम्
And one who, having summoned a Brahmin who is begging and destitute—
यस्तु विद्याभिमानेन नित्यं जयति वै द्विजान्
And whoever, out of pride in knowledge, always defeats the twice-born—
मिथ्यागुणैः स्वमात्मानं नयत्युत्कर्षणं बलात् क्षुत्तृट्संतप्तदेहानां द्विजानां भोक्तुमिच्छताम्
One who, by means of false qualities, forcibly elevates himself, and who desires to eat while twice-borns are tormented by hunger and thirst—
पिशुनः सर्वलोकानां छिद्रान्वेषणतत्परः
A slanderer of all people, ever intent on seeking out faults—
गवां तृष्णाभिभूतानां जलार्थमुपसर्पताम्
And one who approaches cows, overcome by thirst, for the sake of water—
परदोषमभिज्ञाय नृपकर्णे करोति यः
Who, having learned of another's fault, reports it to the king—
प्रनष्टामपि कालेन तमाहुर्ब्रह्मघातकम्
Even after a long time, such a one is called a slayer of Brahmins.
द्विजवित्तापहरणे न्यायतः समुपार्जिते
In the matter of taking away the wealth of a twice-born, even if it has been justly acquired—
अग्निहोत्रपरित्यागो यस्तु याज्ञिककर्मणाम् 4.5.
The abandonment of Agnihotra and other sacrificial rites—
गवां मार्गे वने चाग्निं पुरे ग्रामे च दीपयेत्
One should kindle fire on the path of cows, in the forest, in the city, and in the village.
हीनस्वहरणे चापि नरस्त्रीगजवाजिनाम्
Also, the theft of gold from men, women, elephants, or horses—
चंदनागरुकर्पूरकस्तूरीखण्डवाससाम्
Sandalwood, aloe, camphor, musk, and fine garments—
कन्यानां वरयोग्यानामदानं सदृशे वरे
Giving eligible maidens in marriage to a suitable groom—
कुमारीसाहसं घोरमन्त्यजस्त्रीनिषेवणम्
The violent seizure of a maiden, and intercourse with women of the lowest castes—
