रक्तो मूढस्य लोकोऽयमकार्ये संप्रवर्तते
This world, attached to the deluded, proceeds towards improper actions.
न श्रूयते परं श्रेयः सति चक्षुषि नेक्षते
He does not hear the highest good, nor does he see it even when he has eyes.
सत्यां बुद्धौ न जानाति बोध्यमानो बुधैरपि 4.4.
Even when his intellect is present, he does not understand, even when instructed by the wise.
गर्भस्मृतेरभावेन शास्त्रमुक्तं महर्षिभिः
Because of the absence of memory from the womb, as declared by the great sages in the scriptures,
ये संत्यस्मिन्परे ज्ञाने सर्वकामार्थसाधके
Those who are established in that supreme knowledge, which fulfills all desires and aims,
अव्यक्तेंद्रियवृत्तित्वाद्बाल्ये दुःखं महत्पुनः
Because the functions of the senses are unmanifest in childhood, great suffering arises again.
दंतोत्थाने महद्दुःखं मौलेन व्याधिना तथा
When teeth emerge, there is great pain, and likewise from the affliction of disease at the crown.
तृड्बुभुक्षापरीतांगः कश्चित्तिष्ठति रारटन्
Someone, tormented by thirst and hunger, stands crying out, his body afflicted.
कौमारे कर्णवेधेन मातापित्रोश्च ताडनात्
In childhood, from ear-piercing and from the beating by mother and father,
प्रसन्नेंद्रियवृत्तिश्च कामरागप्रपीडनात्
When the functions of the senses are clear, suffering arises from the torment of desire and passion.
ईर्ष्यया च महद्दुःखं मोहाद्रक्तस्य जायते
From jealousy comes great suffering, and from delusion, pain arises for the passionate.
न रात्रौ विंदते निद्रां कोपाग्निपरिपीडितः
Afflicted by the fire of anger, he does not find sleep at night.
स्त्रीष्वायासितदेहस्य ये पुंसः शुक्रबिंदवः 4.4.
The drops of semen of a man, whose body is exhausted by women,
क्रिमिभिस्तुद्यमानस्य कुष्ठिनः कामिनस्तथा
For the leper, for the passionate one, tormented by worms,
यादृशं विंदते सौख्यं गंडान्वयविनिर्गमे
The kind of pleasure he experiences when the boils discharge,
गंडस्य वेदना यद्वत्स्फुटितस्य निवर्तते
Just as the pain of a boil ceases when it bursts,
विण्मूत्रस्य समुत्सर्गात्सुखं भवति यादृशम्
The pleasure that comes from the expulsion of feces and urine,
नारीष्वशुचिभूतासु सर्वदोषाश्रयासु च
In women, who are impure and the abode of all faults,
सन्मानमपमानेन वियोगेन सुसंगमः
Honor and dishonor, separation and close union,
वलीपलितखालित्यैः शिथिलीकृतविग्रहम्
With wrinkles, gray hair, and baldness, the body is loosened.
स्त्रीपुंसयोर्न्नवं रूपं तदान्योन्यं प्रियं पुरा
The fresh beauty of man and woman, which was once mutually dear,
अपूर्ववत्स्वमात्मानं जरया परिवर्तितः
Like something unprecedented, one's own self is transformed by old age.
जराभिभूतः पुरुषः पत्नीपुत्रादिबांधवैः 4.4.
A man overcome by old age is surrounded by his wife, sons, and other relatives.
धर्ममर्थं च कामं च मोक्षं च न जरी यतः
Because of old age, he no longer pursues righteousness, wealth, desire, or liberation.
वातपित्तकफादीनां वैषम्यं व्याधिरुच्यते
Disease is said to be the disturbance of wind, bile, phlegm, and the like.
वाताद्यव्यतिरिक्तत्वाद्व्याधीनां पञ्जरस्य च तानि च स्वात्मवेद्यानि किमन्यत्कथयाम्यहम्
Because diseases and the body’s cage are not separate from wind and so on, and since these are known by oneself, what else should I say?
एकोत्तरं मृत्युशतमस्मिन्देहे प्रतिष्ठितम्
In this body, one hundred and one forms of death are established.
ये त्विहागंतवः प्रोक्तास्ते प्रशाम्यंति भेषजैः
Those diseases that are said to be incidental here are calmed by medicines.
यदि चापि न मृत्युः स्याद्विषमद्यादशंकितः
And even if death does not occur, one is afflicted by poison, wine, and other dangers.
विविधा व्याधयः शस्त्रं सर्पाद्याः प्राणिनस्तथा
Various diseases, weapons, serpents, and other beings also threaten life.
