तस्मात्तेषां विघातार्थं प्रवराश्च भवामहे
Therefore, for the purpose of restraining them, we became the foremost among them.
संमंत्र्यैवं ततः स्कंदो वामपार्श्वे रवेः स्थितः
Thus, after consultation, Skanda stood at the left side of the Sun.
उक्तश्च स तदार्केण त्वं प्रजादंडनायकः
And he was told by the Sun at that time: 'You are the chief of punishment for the people.'
लिखते यः प्रजानां च सुकृतं यच्च दुष्कृतम्
He who records the good and bad deeds of people.
आश्विनौ चापि सूर्यस्य पार्श्वयोरुभयोः स्थितौ 1.124.
The two Ashvins also stand on either side of the Sun.
द्वारपालौ स्मृतौ तस्य राज्ञः श्रेष्ठौ महाबलौ
They are remembered as the two chief and mighty gatekeepers of that king.
राजृदीप्तौ स्मृतो धातुर्नकारस्तस्य प्रत्ययः तस्मात्स कार्तिकेयस्तु नाम्ना राज्ञ इति स्मृतः
The root 'rāj' shines forth, and the suffix 'na' is applied to it; thus, he is known by name as Kārtikeya, called the king.
स्रु गतौ च स्मृतो धातुर्यस्य स प्रत्ययः स्मृतः
The root 'sru', meaning 'to go', is remembered, and its suffix is also recalled.
प्रथमं यद्भवेद्द्वारं धर्मार्थाभ्यां समाश्रितम्
The first gate that arises is established with dharma and artha.
द्वितीयायां तु कक्षायामप्रधृष्टौ व्यवस्थितौ
In the second enclosure, two unassailable ones are stationed.
वर्णस्य शबलत्वाच्च यमः कल्माष उच्यते
Because of the variegated color of his form, Yama is called Kalmasha (the dark one).
स्थितो दक्षिणत तस्य दंडहस्तसमन्वितः
He stands to the south, equipped with a staff in his hand.
कुबेरो धनदो ज्ञेयो हस्तिरूपो विनायकः कुबेरः कुशरीरत्वात्स नाम्ना धनदः स्मृतः
Kubera, known as the giver of wealth, is recognized as the elephant-faced Vinayaka; Kubera, due to his deformed body, is called by name Dhanada.
नायकः सर्वसत्त्वानां तेन नायक उच्यते
He is the leader of all beings, and thus is called Nāyaka.
रैवतश्चैव दिंडिश्च तौ रवेः पूर्वतः स्थितौ 1.124.
Raivata and Diṇḍi stand to the east of the Sun.
प्लुतं गच्छत्यसौ यस्मात्सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः
He moves swiftly, honored by all the worlds.
डीङ्गतावस्य वै धातोर्दिंडिशब्दो निपात्यते
Because of the root 'ḍiṅg', the word 'Diṇḍi' is applied.
इत्येते प्रवराः प्रोक्ता धात्वर्था नैगमैः शुभैः
Thus these eminent ones have been described, their meanings derived from roots, by the auspicious traditions.
अश्विनौ तौ ततो ज्ञेयौ दंडनायकपिंगलौ
Therefore, those two Ashvins are to be known as Daṇḍanāyaka and Piṅgala.
रेवतश्चैव दिंडिश्च इत्येते प्रवरा मया
Raivata and Diṇḍi—these eminent ones have been described by me.
इत्येभिर्नामभिस्त्वन्ये दानवानां जिघांसया
By these names, others, with the intent to destroy the Dānavas—
सरूपाश्चान्यरूपाश्च विरूपाः कामरूपिणः
Some have similar forms, others have different forms, some are deformed, and some can assume forms at will.
धातुर्दिविति वै प्रोक्तो क्रीडायां स तु उच्यते
The root 'div' is indeed spoken of as play; it is thus called.
ऋचो यजूंषि सामानि यान्युक्तानीह वै मया
The Ṛg, Yajur, and Sāma hymns which have been recited here by me—
ते श्रुत्वाराध्य देवेशं संसिद्धा दिवि संस्थिताः ।। 1.124.
Having heard them, and having worshipped the Lord of the gods, they attained perfection and abided in heaven.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराणे ब्राह्मे पर्वणि सप्तमीकल्पे ब्रह्मर्षिसंवादे प्रवरवर्णनं नाम चतुर्विंशत्युत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and twenty-fourth chapter, named 'The Description of the Excellent,' in the dialogue of the Brahmarshis, in the Saptamikalpa, in the Brahma Parvan of the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana.
व्यासागमनवर्णनम् श्रीगणेशाय नमः श्रीसरस्वत्यै नमः ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय कल्याणानि ददातु वो गणपतिर्यस्मिन्नतुष्टे सति क्षोदीयस्यपि कर्मणि प्रभवितुं ब्रह्मापि जिह्मायते
The Arrival of Vyāsa. Salutation to Śrī Gaṇeśa, salutation to Śrī Sarasvatī. Om, obeisance to the Blessed Vāsudeva. May Gaṇapati grant you auspiciousness; when he is pleased, even in the smallest task, Brahmā himself becomes powerless to obstruct.
शश्वत्पुण्यहिरण्यगर्भरसनासिंहासनाध्यासिनी सेयं वागधिदेवता वितरतु श्रेयांसि भूयांसि वः
May this goddess, the presiding deity of speech, ever pure, seated upon the golden lotus throne of the cosmic egg, bestow upon you ever greater blessings.
नमस्तस्मै विश्वोदयविलयरक्षाप्रकृतये शिवाय क्लेशौघच्छिदुरपद् पद्मप्रणतये
Salutation to that auspicious one, the source, dissolution, and protector of the universe, who destroys the multitude of afflictions, and to whom those devoted to the lotus feet bow.
