स सूर्याभिमुखो भूत्वा जपेन्मंत्रं तु साधकः
The practitioner, facing the sun, should recite the mantra.
तं दृष्ट्वा नाश्नुते मृत्युं दुःखी न च न संशयः
Having seen him, one does not encounter death or sorrow—of this there is no doubt.
उत्तानौ तु करौ कृत्वा पृष्ठलग्नौ परस्परम्
With both hands extended and the backs touching each other,
आक्रम्य चांगुलीमूलमंगुष्ठाभ्यां यथाक्रमम् 1.214.
One should press the bases of the fingers with the thumbs, in order.
द्वादशाद्वीक्षते सूर्यं दिनात्स हि न संशयः
If one gazes at the sun for twelve days, there is no doubt about this.
उदया च विना वामं मध्यतश्चैव तं क्षिपेत्
Without the left, or from the middle, one should cast it accordingly.
मध्यमा विधिना तेन बद्ध्वा मुद्रां तु साधकः
By binding the mudra in the middle as prescribed, the practitioner
मुद्रा सास्तमनी ह्येषा सर्वतन्त्रेश्वरी शुभा
This mudra, called Astamanī, is auspicious and the sovereign of all tantras.
सहस्रं हि शतं वापि मुद्रां बद्ध्वा जपेद्बुधः
A wise person, having bound the mudra, should recite a thousand or a hundred times.
करौ परस्परं लग्नावंगुष्ठौ चोर्ध्वसंस्थितौ
With the hands joined together and the thumbs held upright,
मुद्रा नु मालिनी चैव निर्दहेत्पापपञ्जरम्
Indeed, the Mālinī mudra destroys the cage of sin.
विदर्भ्यांगुलयः सर्वा ईषन्मध्यस्तथाग्रतः
All the fingers of both hands are slightly bent in the middle and at the tips.
सर्वव्याधिहरा देवी सर्व शत्रुविनाशिनी
The goddess removes all diseases and destroys all enemies.
उभौ प्रसार्य वै हस्तौ मध्ये सार्धेन संस्थितौ 1.214.
Both hands are to be spread out, with the middle part joined together.
मुद्रा गभस्तिनी नाम सूर्यस्य हृदयं परम्
This mudra is called Gabhastinī, the supreme heart of the sun.
अर्घ्यकाले तु बध्नीयादर्चयाग्निं प्रपूजयेत्
At the time of offering arghya, one should form it and worship the fire with reverence.
विदक्षिणकनिष्ठिक्यां तर्जनीभ्यां तथा भवेत् जपं यः कुरुते नित्यं त्रिभिर्मासैर्विशुद्यति
By using the right little finger and both index fingers, one who recites daily is purified within three months.
करौ तु संपुटौ कृत्वा तर्जन्यौ द्वे च कुञ्चयेत्
With both hands cupped together, one should bend both index fingers.
सहस्रकिरणा ह्येषा सर्वमुद्रेश्वरेश्वरी नाशयेत्सर्वपापानि तमोराशिमिवांशुमान्
She who has a thousand rays, the sovereign of all seals and lords, destroys all sins just as the sun disperses a mass of darkness.
मुद्रा मुद्रककुंभेति बद्ध्वा पश्चात्तु मंत्रयेत् इति मुद्रांगसहितं सूर्यं पूजयते तु यः
After forming the seal called Mudra Kumbha, one should then recite the mantra; thus, whoever worships the Sun with this seal and its limbs—
अनेन विधिना राजन्ब्रह्मा पूजयते रविम्
O King, by this method, Brahma worships the Sun.
ततः सूर्यमवाप्येह सूर्यलोकं स गच्छति
Then, having attained the Sun here, he goes to the world of the Sun.
स याति परमं स्थानं यत्र देवो दिवाकरः
He reaches the supreme abode where the god, the illuminator of the day, resides.
भोजयित्वा यथाशक्ति ब्राह्मणांश्च विधानतः 1.214.
Having fed the Brahmins according to his ability and the prescribed rules—
एकं गृहीत्वा मरिचमव्रणं च दृढं परम्
Taking a single, unblemished, firm pepper—
यथोक्तेन विधानेन पूजयित्वा दिवाकरम्
Having worshipped the Sun according to the prescribed method—
प्रियसंगमवाप्नोति तत्क्षणादेव नान्यथा
He immediately attains union with his beloved; there is no other way.
कुर्यादेकेन कामांस्तु वत्सरेण स गच्छति
By performing this with one pepper, he attains his desires within a year.
कुरु तस्मान्महाबाहो त्वमेव प्रियदायिनीम्
Therefore, O mighty-armed one, you yourself should perform the act that bestows affection.
संयोगं कृतवान्वीर सह शच्या विधानतः
The hero, having united with Śacī according to the prescribed rule—
