स्वयं याः कथिताः पूर्वमादित्येन खगाधिप
Which were previously spoken by Āditya himself, the lord of birds.
अर्कसंपुटकैरेका द्वितीया मरिचैस्तथा
One is with arka leaves, another with marica (black pepper).
अनोदना पञ्चमी स्यात्षष्ठी विजयसप्तमी
Anodanā is observed on the fifth day, Ṣaṣṭhī on the sixth, and Vijaya Saptamī on the seventh.
शुक्लपक्षे रविदिने दक्षिणे चोत्तरायणे
In the bright fortnight, on a Sunday, during the southern or northern solstice.
स तां सु ब्रह्मचारी स्याच्छौचयुक्तो जितेन्द्रियः
He should be a good celibate, endowed with purity and self-control.
पञ्चम्यामेव पुरुषः कुर्यान्नित्य मनात्मकम्
On the fifth day itself, a person should perform the prescribed daily observance.
अर्कसंपुटकैरेकां तथान्यां मरिचैर्नयेत्
With bundles of arka leaves, and likewise with marica, he should carry out the rite.
अनोदनामन्नरहित उपासीत यथाविधि 1.208.
He should worship according to the proper method, with food devoid of grains.
तथैकां सप्तमीं कृत्वा प्रतिमासं विचक्षणः
In the same way, an intelligent person should perform the Saptamī once each month.
आसां लिखित्वा नामानि पत्रकेषु पृथक्पृथक्
He should write their names separately on leaves.
तदर्थं यो न जानाति लोकवाह्योपि वा नरः
If a person does not know the purpose, even if he is worldly, or otherwise,
तेनैव विधिना यस्तु प्रतिमासं च तत्तपः
He should perform that austerity each month according to the same procedure.
इत्येताः सप्त सप्तम्यः स्वयं प्रोक्ता विवस्वता
These seven Saptamīs have been declared by Vivasvat himself.
अर्कसंपुटकैर्वित्तमचलं सप्तपौरुषम्
With bundles of arka leaves, one attains immovable wealth, sevenfold in strength.
सर्वरोगाः प्रणश्यंति निंबपत्रैर्न संशयः
All diseases are destroyed by neem leaves, without doubt.
अतो धनं धनं धान्यं सुवर्णं रजतं तथा
Therefore, wealth, grain, gold, and silver are obtained.
उपोष्य विजयां शत्रून्राजञ्जयति नित्यशः
By observing Vijaya, one always conquers enemies, O king.
पुत्रकामो लभेत्पुत्रमर्थकामोर्थमक्षयम् कृत्स्नान्कामान्ददात्येषा कामदा कुरुनन्दन ।। 1.208.
One desiring a son obtains a son; one desiring wealth obtains inexhaustible wealth; all desires are granted by this wish-fulfilling Saptamī, O descendant of Kuru.
नरो वा यदि वा नारी यथोक्तं सप्तमीव्रतम्
Whether man or woman, whoever observes the Saptamī vow as prescribed,
न तेषां त्रिषु लोकेषु किंचिदस्तीति दुर्लभम्
For them, nothing is difficult to obtain in the three worlds.
व्रतैस्तु विविधैर्वीर तपोभिर्वा सुदुष्करैः
O hero, through various vows or through austerities that are difficult to perform,
तीर्थाभिषेचनैर्वापि दानहोमार्चनैस्तथा मोक्षार्थी पार्थिवश्रेष्ठ यथाह भगवान्रविः
or by bathing at sacred places, or by acts of charity, offerings, and worship likewise, the seeker of liberation, O best of kings, as spoken by the blessed Sun,
कृत्वादित्यदिने नक्तं भक्त्या संपूजयेद्रविम् सूर्यलोके च नियतं तस्य वासो न संशयः
having observed a fast on the day of the Sun, one should worship Ravi with devotion; in the world of the Sun, his residence is assured, without doubt.
यस्तु पूजयते भक्त्या सप्तम्यां भास्करं नरः
Whoever worships Bhāskara with devotion on the seventh lunar day,
नांधो न कुष्ठी न क्लीबो न व्यंगो न च निर्धनः
is not blind, not afflicted by leprosy, not impotent, not deformed, nor destitute.
विद्यार्थी लभते विद्यां धनार्थी धनमाप्नुयात्
The seeker of knowledge attains knowledge; the seeker of wealth obtains wealth.
लोभात्प्रमादान्मोहाच्च व्रतभंगो यदा भवेत्
If the vow is broken due to greed, negligence, or delusion,
प्रायश्चित्तमिदं कृत्वा पुनरेव व्रती भवेत् 1.208.
having performed this atonement, one becomes a votary again.
अभ्यर्च्य सूर्यसप्तम्यां माल्यधूपादिभिर्नरः
Having worshipped the Sun on the seventh day with garlands, incense, and the like,
सप्तम्यां विप्रमुख्येभ्यो हिरण्यं यः प्रयच्छति
whoever gives gold to foremost Brahmins on the seventh day,
