प्रत्यक्षदेवता ह्येषा देवदेवोयमादरात् 1.207.
For this is the visible deity, the god of gods, to be revered.
पूजयेत्तनयः पापी तथादित्यदिनैरपि
Even a sinful son should worship him, especially on the days of the Sun.
प्राप्ते सूर्यदिने भक्त्या भानुं संपूज्य श्रद्धया
When the day of the Sun arrives, one should worship Bhānu with devotion and faith.
यस्तु पूर्वं रवेर्भक्त्या पञ्चरत्नसमन्वितम्
He who, with devotion, first worships Ravi with the five gems—
मार्तंडप्रीतये यस्तु कुर्याच्छ्राद्धं विधानतः
Whoever performs a śrāddha according to the prescribed rite for the pleasure of Mārtaṇḍa (the Sun),
कृत्वोपवासं षष्ठ्यां तु सप्तम्यां यस्तु मानवः
having observed a fast on the sixth or seventh day, that person,
सर्वदोषविनिर्मुक्तः सूर्यलोके महीयते
becomes free from all faults and is honored in the world of the Sun.
प्रपूज्य विधिवद्भानुं सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात्
By duly worshipping Bhānu (the Sun), one attains all desires.
इति भीष्म विजानीहि न देवो भास्करात्प्रियः
Thus, know this, Bhīṣma: there is no god dearer than Bhāskara (the Sun).
रत्नपर्वतमारुह्य यथा भुवि नराधिपाः
Just as kings ascend the jeweled mountain on earth,
तथा भानुं समाराध्य प्राप्नुवंति नराः फलम् 1.207.
so too, by worshipping Bhānu (the Sun), men obtain the fruit.
मोक्षार्थी मोक्षमाप्नोति चाथ वाऽमरतां व्रजेत्
One who seeks liberation attains liberation, or else may attain immortality.
ब्रह्मादयो देवगणा भानुमाराध्य भारत
O Bhārata, even Brahmā and the other hosts of gods, having worshipped Bhānu (the Sun),
अचलानि महाभागाः सर्वपापहराणि च
became immovable and greatly fortunate, and destroyers of all sins.
भीष्मोऽपि पूजयामास भक्त्या भानुं विधानतः
Even Bhīṣma worshipped Bhānu (the Sun) with devotion and according to the rite.
तथा त्वमपि राजेन्द्र पूजयेमं दिवाकरम्
So you too, O king of kings, should worship this Divākara (the Sun).
यथा गतः स भगवान्व्यासो भीष्मश्च मानद
Just as that blessed Vyāsa and Bhīṣma went, O bestower of honor,
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराणे ब्राह्मे पर्वणि सप्तमीकल्पे व्यासभीष्मसंवादे आदित्यपूजामाहात्म्यवर्णनं नाम सप्ताधिकद्विशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the holy Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa, in the Brāhma Parvan, in the Saptamīkalpa, in the dialogue of Vyāsa and Bhīṣma, the chapter named 'The Greatness of Worship of Āditya' is the two hundred and seventh.
सप्तमीव्रतवर्णनम् उपोषितो भवतीह नरो यस्तु द्विजोत्तम
The description of the Saptamī vow: O best of twice-born, the person who observes a fast here,
बहवः कुरुशार्दूल भूयस्त्वेताः शृणुष्व मे
There are many more, O tiger among the Kurus; now hear these from me.
स्वयं याः कथिताः पूर्वमादित्येन खगाधिप
Which were previously spoken by Āditya himself, the lord of birds.
अर्कसंपुटकैरेका द्वितीया मरिचैस्तथा
One is with arka leaves, another with marica (black pepper).
अनोदना पञ्चमी स्यात्षष्ठी विजयसप्तमी
Anodanā is observed on the fifth day, Ṣaṣṭhī on the sixth, and Vijaya Saptamī on the seventh.
शुक्लपक्षे रविदिने दक्षिणे चोत्तरायणे
In the bright fortnight, on a Sunday, during the southern or northern solstice.
स तां सु ब्रह्मचारी स्याच्छौचयुक्तो जितेन्द्रियः
He should be a good celibate, endowed with purity and self-control.
पञ्चम्यामेव पुरुषः कुर्यान्नित्य मनात्मकम्
On the fifth day itself, a person should perform the prescribed daily observance.
अर्कसंपुटकैरेकां तथान्यां मरिचैर्नयेत्
With bundles of arka leaves, and likewise with marica, he should carry out the rite.
अनोदनामन्नरहित उपासीत यथाविधि 1.208.
He should worship according to the proper method, with food devoid of grains.
तथैकां सप्तमीं कृत्वा प्रतिमासं विचक्षणः
In the same way, an intelligent person should perform the Saptamī once each month.
आसां लिखित्वा नामानि पत्रकेषु पृथक्पृथक्
He should write their names separately on leaves.
