निष्कामः पूजयेद्यस्तु स मोक्षं प्राप्नुयान्नरः
But one who worships without desire, that man attains liberation.
ब्रह्मादयस्तथा देवं पूजयित्वा विभावसुम्
Brahma and the others, having worshipped the shining god—
महादेवार्चनविधिवर्णनम् येन पूजयते नित्यं महादेवं दिवा करम्
By whom Mahadeva is worshipped daily, by hand, during the day—
प्रभूतं निर्मलं तेज आराध्य परमं सुखम्
He attains abundant, pure brilliance, and, having worshipped, supreme happiness.
क्रमेण यावदीशानं हृदि बीजं च विन्यसेत्
Step by step, one should place the seed (mantra) of Ishana in the heart.
उपरिष्टात्ततस्तस्य हृदयेन तु पंकजम्
Then, above that, one should place the lotus with the heart.
दीप्तादि पूर्वमारभ्य आमहादेवगोचरम्
Beginning with the shining (petal), up to the domain of Mahadeva—
अबीजैः केसराग्रेषु क्रमेणैव च पूजयेत्
One should worship, in order, the tips of the filaments with seedless (offerings).
तस्योपहृत्य तं चान्यं वेदितव्यं खपुष्करम्
Having offered that, one should know the other, the sky-lotus.
पाद्यमाचमनं स्थानं वस्त्रगंधादिभूषणम्
Water for washing the feet, sipping, a seat, clothing, fragrance, and ornaments—
कर्तव्यं श्रद्धया भक्त्या एवं तुष्यति भास्करः
These should be offered with faith and devotion; thus the Sun is pleased.
आदित्यं पूजयित्वा तु पश्चादंगानि पूजयेत्
Having worshipped Aditya, one should then worship the limbs.
दिग्विदिक्षु न्यसेदस्त्रमिंद्रादि दिशोत्तरांतिकम्
One should place the weapons of Indra and others in the directions and intermediate directions.
पुष्पैर्गंधैश्च धूपैश्च हृदयानि क्रमेण तु
With flowers, fragrances, and incense, the hearts are to be honored in order.
बाह्यतः पूर्वतो मंदं दक्षिणेन बुधं तथा
Outside, to the east, place Soma; to the south, place Budha likewise.
आग्नेय्यां च कुजं पूज्य नैर्ऋत्यां भानुदेहजम्
In the southeast, worship Kuja; in the southwest, worship the offspring of Bhanu.
इन्द्रादिलोकपालांश्च ततोऽष्टौ पूजयेद्बुधः
Then, the wise should worship the eight guardians of the worlds beginning with Indra.
क्रमेण पूजयेद्भानुं लोकपालैर्ग्रहैः सह
In order, worship Bhanu together with the guardians of the worlds and the planets.
अनेन विधिना यत्र देवः संपूज्यते रविः
Wherever the god Ravi is worshipped according to this procedure,
वर्षोपलविषादिभ्यो भयं तत्र न विद्यते
There is no fear from drought, poison, and the like.
तेजोबिंबांतमध्यस्थ आदित्यः परमार्थतः
Āditya, truly, is situated in the center of the radiant orb.
इत्येष विधिराख्यातो मया भीष्म तवाखिलः
Thus, O Bhīṣma, I have described to you this entire procedure.
इत्थं पूज्य विवस्वन्तं हृद्बीजेन विसर्जयेत्
Having thus worshipped Vivasvant, one should dismiss him with the heart-seed.
सूर्यपूजामाहात्म्यवर्णनम् रूपवर्ण समं चैव पौराणिकमनुत्तमम्
The description of the greatness of Sūrya worship: its form and color are equal, and it is supreme according to the Purāṇas.
पौराणिकानां मंत्राणामुद्धारं वैदिकादृते
The extraction of Purāṇic mantras, except for those from the Vedas.
वर्णरेफसमायुक्तं विद्रुमेनैव भूषितम्
Endowed with the letter 'varṇa' and 'repha', adorned with coral.
बिंदुरेफसमायुक्तं दीर्घया मात्रया तथा
Endowed with the dot and 'repha', and with a long measure.
तृतीयं तु तथा प्रोक्तं सविसर्गं जनाधिप
The third, as stated, is with visarga, O lord of people.
भास्करोयं महान्साक्षान्मंत्रमूर्तिस्त्रिरक्षरः
This Bhāskara is great, manifest, the form of mantra, and three-syllabled.
यस्त्विदं जपते भक्त्या स याति परमां गतिम्
Whoever recites this with devotion attains the supreme state.
