पात्रमौदुम्बरं गृह्य कृत्स्नं सूर्यस्य दर्शयेत्
Taking a vessel made of udumbara wood, show it completely to the Sun.
हंसः शुचिषदिति पाद्यं दद्याद्विचक्षणः
Reciting 'Haṃsaḥ śuciṣat', the discerning one should offer water for washing the feet.
अग्निस्तु सप्तभिर्वीर कीर्तितास्ताश्च कृत्स्नशः
O hero, fire is praised with seven (verses); all of them, in their entirety.
हिरण्यवर्णेति क्रमाच्चतुर्भिश्च नराधिप
Reciting 'Hiraṇyavarṇa' in order, O king, with four (verses).
भानोः प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा कृणुष्वपाज इत्यपि
Having circumambulated Bhānu (the Sun), also recite 'Kṛṇuṣva pāja'.
पतिमिंद्रस्तवाचाम द्वितीया परिकीर्तिता
'Patim indrastavā cāma' is mentioned as the second (verse).
सिध्ये वृत्राणि जिघ्ने शगंधैर्भानुं प्रपूजयेत्
For success, having destroyed obstacles, worship Bhānu (the Sun) with fragrant substances.
सप्त युंजंति रथमनया पूजयेद्रविम्
With 'Sapta yuñjanti ratham', worship Ravi (the Sun) with this.
को ददर्श प्रथम मनया धूपमादिशेत्
With 'Ko dadarśa prathama', one should offer incense with this.
उद्दीप्यस्येत्यनया दीपं दद्याद्विभावसोः
With 'Uddīpyasya', one should offer a lamp to Vibhāvasu (the Fire).
युक्ता मातासीत्यनया नैवेद्यं प्रतिपादयेत्
With 'Yuktā mātāsi', one should present the food offering.
तस्याः समुद्रेत्यनया उपवीतं निवेदयेत्
With 'Tasyāḥ samudre', one should offer the sacred thread.
ऋग्भिर्वै पंचभिस्तात शृणु चैकमनादृतः
With five Ṛg (verses), O dear one, listen with undivided attention.
चत्वारि वागिति भवेद्द्वितीया परिकीर्तिता
'Catvāri vāg' is mentioned as the second (verse).
कृष्णं नियानं हि तथा चतुर्थी परिकीर्तिता
The fourth is called the 'Krishna Niyana' (dark transition).
गतेहनामित्यनया अव्यंगं भास्करं न्यसेत्
With this, one should place the flawless Sun in the house.
कृत्वा पूजां ततश्चर्ग्भिरष्टाभिरिति चाच्युत
Then, having performed worship, O Acyuta, with eight offerings—
इत्येष ते मयाख्यातः प्रतिमापूजने विधिः
Thus I have explained to you the procedure for worshipping the image.
अनेन विधिना यस्तु सततं पूजयेद्रविम्
Whoever constantly worships the Sun by this method—
पुत्रार्थी लभते पुत्रान्धनार्थी लभते धनम्
One who desires a son obtains sons; one who desires wealth obtains wealth.
निष्कामः पूजयेद्यस्तु स मोक्षं प्राप्नुयान्नरः
But one who worships without desire, that man attains liberation.
ब्रह्मादयस्तथा देवं पूजयित्वा विभावसुम्
Brahma and the others, having worshipped the shining god—
महादेवार्चनविधिवर्णनम् येन पूजयते नित्यं महादेवं दिवा करम्
By whom Mahadeva is worshipped daily, by hand, during the day—
प्रभूतं निर्मलं तेज आराध्य परमं सुखम्
He attains abundant, pure brilliance, and, having worshipped, supreme happiness.
क्रमेण यावदीशानं हृदि बीजं च विन्यसेत्
Step by step, one should place the seed (mantra) of Ishana in the heart.
उपरिष्टात्ततस्तस्य हृदयेन तु पंकजम्
Then, above that, one should place the lotus with the heart.
दीप्तादि पूर्वमारभ्य आमहादेवगोचरम्
Beginning with the shining (petal), up to the domain of Mahadeva—
अबीजैः केसराग्रेषु क्रमेणैव च पूजयेत्
One should worship, in order, the tips of the filaments with seedless (offerings).
तस्योपहृत्य तं चान्यं वेदितव्यं खपुष्करम्
Having offered that, one should know the other, the sky-lotus.
पाद्यमाचमनं स्थानं वस्त्रगंधादिभूषणम्
Water for washing the feet, sipping, a seat, clothing, fragrance, and ornaments—
