धर्ममर्थं तथा कामं विद्यां मोक्षश्रियं तथा
He attains righteousness, wealth, desire, knowledge, liberation, and prosperity.
सौरेण विधिना तात पूजयित्वा दिवाकरम्
By the solar rite, O dear one, having worshipped the Sun,
येन स्नातोऽमलो याति नरः पूज यितुं रविम्
He who, having bathed and become pure, goes to worship Ravi,
शुचौ मनोरमे स्थाने संगृह्यास्त्रेण मृत्तिकाम्
In a clean and delightful place, taking earth with a mantra,
संधिसंघो हकारस्तु टरेफोफसमन्विते
The conjunction of sounds is the letter 'ha', accompanied by 'ṭa', 'ra', and 'pha'.
मलस्नानं ततः पश्चाच्छेषार्धेन तु कारयेत्
Afterwards, one should perform the bath for impurity with half of the remainder.
एकमस्त्रेण चालभ्य तथान्यं भास्करेण तु
Touching one with the mantra, and likewise another with the Bhaskara mantra,
जप्त्वास्त्रेण क्षिपेद्दिक्षु निर्विघ्नं तु जलं भवेत्
Having recited the mantra, one should throw it in the directions; the water will surely be unobstructed.
गु(मु)ण्डयित्वा ततः स्नायादिति तीर्थेषु मानवः
Then, having shaved his head, a man should bathe at those sacred waters.
स्नात्वा राजोपचारेण पुनराचम्य यत्नतः
After bathing, with royal honor, he should carefully perform ācamana again.
हरेफौ बिंदुयुक्तश्च तथान्यो दीर्घया सह
The syllables 'ha' and 'pha', joined with a dot, and another with a long vowel,
सकारः सविसर्गस्तु मंत्रराजोऽयमुच्यते
The syllable 'sa' with visarga—this is called the king of mantras.
पर्वणामूर्ध्वतो देवाः सव्येन मुनयस्तथा
Above the joints are the gods, and likewise the sages on the left.
यद्गीतं प्रवरं लोके अक्षराणां मनीषिभिः
That supreme song of letters, praised in the world by the wise,
कृत्वा वामकरे हस्ताद्ध्यात्वा प्राज्ञो विधानवित्
Having placed it in his left hand, the wise knower of rites should meditate.
ततो विद्वान्क्षिपेत्पश्चाद्भास्करायोदकांजलिम्
Then the learned one should offer water in his cupped hands to the Sun from behind.
मंत्रराजेति यः पूर्वं तवाख्यातो मया नृप
O king, this king of mantras was previously explained to you by me.
मंत्रैरात्मानमेकत्र कृत्वा ह्यर्घ्यं प्रदापयेत्
Having united himself with the mantras, he should offer the arghya at that place.
कृत्वा मण्डलकं वित्तमेकचित्तो व्यवस्थितः
Having made a circle, the resolute one should remain single-minded.
तिलतंडुलसयुक्तं कुशगन्धोदकेन तु
With sesame, rice, and scented water with kuśa grass,
कृत्वा शिरसि तत्पात्रं जानुभ्यामवनिं गतः
Having placed that vessel on his head, he should go to the ground on his knees.
मुच्यते सर्वपापैस्तु यो ह्येवं विनिवेदयेत्
He who thus makes the offering is freed from all sins.
अयनानां सहस्रेण चन्द्रस्य ग्रहणे तथा दत्ते कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ तदर्घ्येण फलं लभेत्
By giving at the lunar eclipse, O best of the Kurus, one gains the fruit of a thousand solstices with that arghya.
दीक्षामन्त्रविहीनोऽपि भक्त्या संवत्सरेण तु
Even without the initiation mantra, with devotion, in a year,
यः पुनर्दीक्षितो विद्वान्विधिनार्घ्यं निवेदयेत्
But if a learned, initiated one offers the arghya according to rule,
इह जन्मनि सौभाग्यमायुरागेग्यसंपदाम्
In this very life he attains good fortune, long life, love, knowledge, and wealth.
एष स्नानविधिः प्रोक्तो मया संक्षेपतस्तव
This procedure for bathing has been briefly explained by me to you.
सौरधर्मवर्णनम् सम्यग्ब्रह्मर्चनविधिं पूजयिष्यामि येन वै
Now I shall describe the proper method of worshipping the Sun, by which the rite of honoring Brahman is duly performed.
विविक्ते विजय स्थाने सुप्रसन्ने सुशोभने
In a secluded, victorious place, which is serene and splendid,
पूजयेद्भास्करं मन्त्री सरलीकृतविग्रहः
the worshipper, having purified his form, should worship Bhāskara with mantras.
