Eighty-six thousand yojanas, and eighty as well,
For those who act virtuously, it appears as if it is very near.
With sharp thorns and covered with gravel,
In some places by the great sun, and by terrible, insatiable diggers,
Then with mountains falling down, filled with pure trees,
In some places with uneven pits, elsewhere with clods of earth and stalks,
In some places filled with groves of bamboo, crowded with many-branched clusters,
Then in some places covered with rocky crags, and again with forest fires,
In some places, let them enter up to the neck, filled with sand,
In some places with lions, in others with tigers, and with fierce biting insects,
And in some places with terrible flies, and with venomous snakes,
With great bulls gouging the path with their sharp horns,
And with fierce ḍākinīs and terrifying rākṣasas,
With a mighty, violent wind mixed with great nooses,
In some places, they go while being torn apart by falling lightning,
They go while being burned by a shower of blazing coals,
They are repeatedly terrified by the dreadful roars of great clouds,
They go while being struck by torrents of great razor-sharp rain,
By very cold, sharp, and harsh wind,
Through a difficult, trackless, deserted wilderness on all sides,
All embodied beings who are deluded and do evil deeds are led away; by merit one attains divinity, by sin one goes to hell.
Even if the Lord of the gods, the Sun, is worshipped in the mind by someone, even slightly—
But, due to very terrible sins, for a certain time, by your command—
Therefore, a person should always practice devotion to Bhāskara (the Sun).
Thus ends the one hundred and ninety-second chapter in the dialogue of Saptāśvatilaka and Anūru on the duties relating to the Sun, in the Saptamī section of the Brāhma Parvan of the glorious Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa.
Description of the procedure for using a tooth-stick. Saptāśvatilaka said: On the solstice, equinox, weekday, during a transit, or an eclipse—
O Vainateya, listen as I explain the procedure for the Saptamī vow.
The first and second days are with siddhārthaka seeds, and with cases made of arka wood.
The seventh day is declared to be with caudana (rice balls), O hero, and is called Saptamī.
And now, in order, I will describe the characteristics of these days.
