तृणानि काष्ठं पुष्पाणि बीजौषधिमनुत्तमाम्
Grasses, wood, flowers, seeds, and excellent medicinal herbs,
ताम्रं सीसं त्रपुं कांस्यं शंखाद्यं च जलोद्भवम्
Copper, lead, tin, bell-metal, conch-shells, and other things produced from water,
और्णकार्पासकौशेयभंगपट्टोद्भवानि च
Woolen, cotton, silk, hemp, and linen fabrics,
एवमादीनि चान्यानि द्रव्याणि विविधानि च 1.191.
And likewise, other such various substances.
यद्वा तद्वा तु पारोक्ष्यमपि सर्षपमात्रकम्
Whether it is this or that, even the smallest transgression, as tiny as a mustard seed,
एवमाद्यैर्नरः पापैरुत्क्रांतेः समनंतरम्
After a man commits such sins as these, immediately upon his departure,
यमलोके व्रजेदेवं शरीरेण यमाज्ञया
He goes to the realm of Yama, in his body, by the command of Yama.
देवमानुषजीवानामधर्मनिरतात्मनाम्
Of the gods, humans, and living beings whose souls are devoted to unrighteousness,
विनयाभावयुक्तानां प्रमादा त्स्वलितात्मनाम्
Of those lacking humility, careless, and whose souls have strayed,
पारदारिकचोराणामन्यायव्यवहारिणाम्
Of adulterers, thieves, and those who act unjustly,
तस्मात्कृतस्य पापस्य प्रायश्चित्तं समाचरेत्
Therefore, for a sin that has been committed, one should perform atonement.
यः करोति शुभं कर्म कारयेदनुमोदयेत्
Whoever performs a virtuous deed, or causes it to be done, or approves of it,
इति संक्षेपतः प्रोक्ता पापभेदात्त्रिधा गतिः
Thus, in brief, the threefold path resulting from the types of sin has been explained.
सप्ताश्वतिलकानूरुसंवादवर्णनम् सप्ताश्वतिलक उवाच संत्रासजननं घोरं पापानां पापकारिणाम् । १ स्त्रीपुनपुंसकैर्वृद्धैर्गंतव्यं सर्वजंतुषु
Description of the dialogue with Saptāśvatilaka. Saptāśvatilaka said: Terrifying and fearsome is the fate of sinners and those who commit evil; among all beings, women, men, and the aged must go.
चित्रगुप्तादिभिः सर्वैर्धर्मस्थैः सत्यवादिभि अवश्यं हि कृतं कर्म भोक्तव्यं तद्विचारितम्
By Citragupta and all others established in righteousness and truthfulness, surely the deed that has been done must be experienced, as it has been judged.
तत्र ये शुभकर्माणः सौम्य चित्ता दयान्विताः
There, those who perform good deeds, whose minds are gentle and endowed with compassion,
यः प्रदद्याद्द्विजेंद्राणामुपानत्काष्ठछत्रकम्
Whoever gives to the best of the twice-born a pair of sandals, a stick, or an umbrella,
सोपानत्को नरो यस्तु देवायतनमाविशेत्
And the man who, wearing sandals, enters a temple of the gods,
सोपानत्कानि दानानि तथान्नं तु विशेषतः यस्माद्याति सुखेनैव तस्माद्धर्मं समाचरेत्
Gifts given with sandals, and especially food—because one goes happily, therefore one should practice righteousness.
ये पुनः क्रूरकर्माणो नराः पापरताः खग
But those men who are cruel in their actions, devoted to sin, O bird,
षडशीतिसहस्राणि योजनानामशीति च
Eighty-six thousand yojanas, and eighty as well,
समीपस्थमिवाभाति नराणां शुभचारिणाम् 1.192.
For those who act virtuously, it appears as if it is very near.
तीक्ष्णकंटकयुक्तेन शर्करानिचितेन च
With sharp thorns and covered with gravel,
क्वचिदर्केण महता दुरंतैश्चैव खातकैः
In some places by the great sun, and by terrible, insatiable diggers,
ततः पतद्भिर्विमलैः पर्वतैर्वृक्षसंकुलैः
Then with mountains falling down, filled with pure trees,
क्वचिद्विषमगर्ताभिः क्वचिल्लोष्ठैः सपिच्छलैः
In some places with uneven pits, elsewhere with clods of earth and stalks,
अनेकशाखारचितैर्व्याप्तैर्वंशवनैः क्वचित्
In some places filled with groves of bamboo, crowded with many-branched clusters,
अथ शृंगाटकैर्व्याप्तैः क्वचिद्दावाग्निना पुनः
Then in some places covered with rocky crags, and again with forest fires,
क्वचिद्वालुकया व्याप्तमाकंठांतं प्रवेशयेत्
In some places, let them enter up to the neck, filled with sand,
क्वचित्सिंहैः क्वचिद्व्याघ्रैर्दंशैः कीटैश्च दारुणैः
In some places with lions, in others with tigers, and with fierce biting insects,
