अरुदत्सा तु तत्पत्नी मित्रवाक्येन कर्षिता
She, that wife, wept, distressed by the words of her friend.
किं रोदिषि मदापूर्णे सत्यं कथय शोभने
Why do you weep, O one filled with pride? Tell the truth, O beautiful one.
यदि नायामि पार्श्वे त्वां सोमदत्त धनोत्तम
If I do not come to your side, O Somadatta, best of the wealthy,
इति वाक्येन बद्धाहं यास्याम्यद्य तदंतिके
By these words I am bound; today I will go to him.
सुष्वाप सा तु तत्पार्श्वे ह्यगमत्कामविह्वला
She slept well at his side, overcome by desire.
वचश्चोवाच लोभात्मा कुत्र यासि च सुन्दरि
The greedy one spoke these words: 'Where are you going, O beautiful one?'
कामालसा तु तं चौरमुवाच मदविह्वला
Languid with desire, she replied to that thief, her mind disturbed by passion.
चौरस्तामाह भोः सुभ्रूर्भूषण देहि मेऽबले
The thief said to her, 'O lovely-browed one, give me your ornament, O gentle lady.'
आलिंग्योपपतिं मित्रं तुभ्यं दास्यामि भूषणम्
Embracing your lover, your friend, I will give you the ornament.
दृष्ट्वा तामब्रवीद्वैश्यः कथं याता स्मरालसे 3.2.9.
Seeing her, the merchant said, 'How have you come, weary from love?'
कामालसा तु तच्छ्रुत्वा यथा जातं तथाऽब्रवीत्
Kamalasa, having heard that, spoke exactly as it had happened.
मत्वा पतिव्रतां नारीं परिक्रम्य व्यसर्जयत्
Considering the woman to be devoted to her husband, he circled her and released her.
गेहे प्रवेशयामास तत्पतिर्यत्र तिष्ठति
He caused her to enter the house where her husband was staying.
बुभुजे विषयान्दिव्यान्देवदेवेन चोदितान् कस्य सत्यं स्मृतं श्रेष्ठं तेषां मध्ये वदस्व मे
He enjoyed the divine pleasures prompted by the god; among them, whose truth is greatest? Tell me.
चौरस्य सत्यता श्रेष्ठा यथा जाता तथा शृणु
The thief's truthfulness is supreme; listen as it happened.
वैधव्यभीत्या सा देवी स्वमित्रं प्रति चागता
Out of fear of widowhood, the lady approached her own friend.
चौरस्तु सत्यभीत्या वै त्यक्त्वा तां मुदमागतः
The thief, out of fear of truth, abandoned her and attained joy.
गौडदेशे महाराज वर्धनं नाम वै पुरम्
In the land of Gauda, O king, there is a city called Vardhana.
गुणशेखर आख्यातो भूपालस्तत्र धर्मवान्
There, the righteous king was known as Gunasekhara.
कदाचिद्भूपतिर्यातो मन्दिरे गिरिजापतेः
Once, the king went to the temple of the lord of Girija.
वृश्चिकस्तत्र संप्राप्य ददंश नृपतिं रुषा
A scorpion, having arrived there, angrily stung the king.
तदा तु निर्भयानन्दो विषमुत्तार्य तस्य वै
Then, Nirbhayananda removed the poison from him.
शृणु राजन्महाभाग शत्रून्षण्मानसाधमान् रजोगुणाच्च ते जातास्तेषां भेदाः पृथक्पृथक्
Hear, O fortunate king, about the six enemies of the mind; they arise from the quality of passion, and their distinctions are separate.
मोहो दंभो मदश्चैव ममताशा च गर्हणा
Delusion, hypocrisy, intoxication, possessiveness, hope, and reproach.
कामी विष्णुस्तथा रुद्रः क्रोधी लोभी विधिस्तथा
Desire is Vishnu, likewise Rudra; anger, greed, and also destiny.
माया वश्याश्च ते सर्वे तर्हि तत्पूजनेन किम्
All of them are subject to illusion; then what is the purpose of their worship?
न जितः स जिनो ज्ञेयोऽद्वैतवादी निरंजनः 3.2.10.
He who is not conquered should be known as the conqueror, the non-dualist, stainless.
तत्प्रसादाय यो धर्मः शृणु मे वसुधाधिप
Hear from me, O lord of the earth, the dharma for attaining his favor.
अतो गोपूजनं शुद्धं हिंसा सर्वत्र वर्जिता
Therefore, the worship of cows is pure, and violence is to be avoided everywhere.
तस्मान्मांसं च पानं च वर्जितं सर्वदैव हि। न्यायेनोपार्जितं वित्तं भोजयेच्च बुभुक्षितान्
Thus, meat and intoxicating drink are always to be avoided; one should feed the hungry with wealth acquired justly.
