न तद्दानमसत्कारपारुष्यमलिनीकृतम्
That gift is not a true gift which is tainted by disrespect, harshness, or impurity.
न तद्धनं न च प्रीतिर्न धर्मः प्रियवर्जितः यत्नेनापि कृतं सर्वं क्रोधोऽस्य निष्फलं खग ।। 1.189.
That wealth, that affection, that righteousness—none is dear if love is absent; even if done with effort, all is fruitless if anger is present, O bird.
यः श्रद्धयार्चितं दद्यात्प्रति गृह्णाति चार्चितम्
He who gives with faith and receives with reverence—
औदार्यं स्वागतं मैत्री ह्यनुकंपा च मत्सरः
Generosity, welcome, friendship, compassion, and absence of envy—
वाराणसी कुरुक्षेत्रं प्रयागं पुष्कराणि च
Varanasi, Kurukshetra, Prayaga, and Pushkara—
मूलस्थानं महापुण्यं पुंडीरस्वामिकं तथा
The original holy place, the great sacred site, and also the abode of Pundarika.
इत्येते कीर्तिता देशाः सुरसिद्धनिषेविताः गोसिद्धमुनि वासाश्च देशाः पुण्याः प्रकीर्तिताः
Thus these regions have been named, frequented by gods and siddhas; O sage, the dwellings of cows, siddhas, and sages have also been declared holy places.
सूर्यायतनसंस्थानां यद्यदल्पं तु दीयते
If even a little is given to those established at the abode of the Sun—
ग्रहणं चंद्रसूर्याभ्यामुत्तरायणमुत्तमम्
The eclipses of the moon and sun, and the auspicious northern course—
दिनच्छिद्राणि संक्रांतिः पुण्यं विषुपदं खग
The intervals of the day, the solstice, and the sacred equinox, O bird—
भक्तिभावः परा प्रीतिर्धर्मो धर्मैकभावनः
Devotion, supreme affection, righteousness, and the contemplation of righteousness alone—
श्रद्धया विधिवत्पात्रे प्रतिपादितमुत्तमम् 1.189.
That which is given with faith, properly, to a worthy recipient, is supreme.
यद्दानं श्रद्धया पात्रे विधिवत्प्रतिपादितम्
That gift which is given with faith, to a worthy recipient, in the proper manner—
आर्तेषु दीनेषु गुणान्वितेषु यः श्रद्धया स्वल्पमपि प्रदद्यात्
Whoever gives even a little, with faith, to those who are distressed, poor, or endowed with virtue—
श्रद्धा दानं परं ज्ञेयं श्रद्धा एव तपः परम्
Know that faith is the highest form of giving; faith alone is the supreme austerity.
अथाहिंसा क्षमा सत्यं ह्रीः श्रद्धेंद्रियसंयमः
Nonviolence, forgiveness, truthfulness, modesty, faith, and control of the senses—
हंतव्यस्तैः समस्तैर्वा सूर्यधर्मैरनुष्ठितैः
One must destroy all these faults by means of the practices prescribed by the solar tradition.
परस्त्रीद्रव्यसंकल्पं यः सापेक्षं करोति च अरिभिः परिभूतं च संत्यजेच्चैव पापकृत्
Whoever, with desire, contemplates another's wife or property, or abandons someone insulted by enemies, is a wrongdoer.
तद्भार्यामित्रपुत्रेषु यश्चावज्ञां करोति च
And whoever shows contempt toward the wife, friend, or son of such a person—
ब्रह्मघ्नश्च सुरापश्च स्तेयी च गुरुतल्पगः
A killer of a Brahmin, a drinker of liquor, a thief, or one who violates the teacher's bed—
क्रोधाद्द्वेषाद्भयाल्लोभाद्ब्राह्मणस्य वदेत यः 1.189.
Whoever, out of anger, hatred, fear, or greed, would harm a Brahmin—
ब्राह्मणं च समाहूय याचमानमकिंचनम्
And whoever, having summoned a Brahmin who is begging and destitute—
देवद्विजगवां भूमिं पूर्वदत्तां हरेत यः
Whoever seizes land previously given to gods, Brahmins, or cows—
अधीत्य यो रवेर्ज्ञानं परित्यजति मंदधीः
Whoever, having studied the knowledge of the Sun, then abandons it, being dull-minded—
अग्निहोत्रपरित्यागः पंचयज्ञियकर्मणाम्
The abandonment of the Agnihotra and the rites of the five great sacrifices—
अप्रियं सूर्यभक्तानामभक्ष्यस्य च भक्षणम्
The consumption of what is forbidden, or what is unpleasing to the devotees of the Sun—
सर्वाधिपत्यमेतेषां नास्ति देवपुरोत्तमे
None of these have any sovereignty in the presence of the supreme Lord among the gods.
केचिदत्रैव मुच्यन्ते ज्ञानयोगपरा नराः
Some, even here, are liberated—those men devoted to knowledge and yoga.
तस्माद्विमोक्षमन्विच्छन्भोगासक्तिं विवर्जयेत्
Therefore, one who seeks liberation should abandon attachment to enjoyment.
यच्चाप्यसक्तहृदया जपन्तीमं प्रसंगतः
And whatever is recited by those whose hearts are unattached, in this context—
