ये चापवादं शृण्वंति विमूढा ब्राह्मणेषु वै
And those fools who listen to slander against Brāhmaṇas—
सर्वेषामेव पात्राणां सत्पात्रं जापकः परः
Of all recipients, the one who recites sacred texts is the highest worthy recipient.
सौरधर्मेषु सप्ताश्वसंवादः जपोपेक्षे तथा दानं सह पात्रेण नश्यति
In the duties related to the sun, there is the dialogue of the seven horses; neglect of recitation and giving, along with the worthy recipient, is destroyed.
भस्मनीव हुतं हव्यं यथा होतुश्च निष्फलम्
Just as an offering poured into ashes is fruitless for the sacrificer,
यथा षण्ढोऽफलः स्त्रीषु यथा गौर्गवि चाफला
As a eunuch is fruitless with women, as a cow is fruitless among oxen,
लोहोडुपेन प्रतरन्निमज्जत्युदके यथा
As iron sinks in water when crossed with a wooden float,
कारुण्यात्सर्वभूतेषु श्रद्धया यत्प्रदीयते
Whatever is given with compassion and faith to all beings,
दीनांधकृपणानां च बालवृद्धातुरेषु च
And to the poor, the blind, the miserable, as well as to children, the aged, and the sick,
न हि स्वार्थं समुद्दिश्य प्रतिगृह्णंति साधवः
Indeed, the virtuous do not accept gifts with their own interest in mind.
दातुरेवोपकाराय वदत्यर्थी ददस्व मे
The petitioner says, 'Give to me,' only for the benefit of the giver.
देहीति सुवदन्नर्थी धनं बोधयतीव सः
When the petitioner says, 'Give,' he seems to awaken the giver to wealth.
बोधयंति न याचन्ते देहीति कृपणा जनाः 1.189.
Those miserable people do not ask, 'Give,' but remain silent.
आयात्यर्थी गृहं यस्तु कस्तं न प्रतिपूजयेत्
If a petitioner comes to one's house, who would not honor him?
यद्बलादप्यनिच्छंतं योजयंति नराश्रयान्
People forcibly employ those who are unwilling, by their own power.
एकस्तिष्ठति चाधस्तादन्यश्चोपरि तिष्ठति
One stands below, and another stands above.
यः प्राप्तायार्थिने दानं त्यक्त्वा पात्र मुदीक्षते
He who, when a worthy recipient arrives, withholds a gift and scrutinizes the recipient—
यद्यर्थिनो नरा न स्युर्दानधर्मः कथं भवेत्
If there were no supplicants, how could the duty of giving exist?
पादोदकमनुव्रज्यात्स्वर्गसोपानसप्तकम्
Following the water used to wash the feet is like ascending the seven steps to heaven.
ग्रासादर्धमपि ग्रासं युक्तं दातुं सदार्थिनाम्
It is proper to give even half of one's own portion to those who are truly in need.
तस्मात्सत्कृत्य दातव्यमनंतफलमिच्छता
Therefore, one desiring endless fruit should give with due honor.
न तद्दानमसत्कारपारुष्यमलिनीकृतम्
That gift is not a true gift which is tainted by disrespect, harshness, or impurity.
न तद्धनं न च प्रीतिर्न धर्मः प्रियवर्जितः यत्नेनापि कृतं सर्वं क्रोधोऽस्य निष्फलं खग ।। 1.189.
That wealth, that affection, that righteousness—none is dear if love is absent; even if done with effort, all is fruitless if anger is present, O bird.
यः श्रद्धयार्चितं दद्यात्प्रति गृह्णाति चार्चितम्
He who gives with faith and receives with reverence—
औदार्यं स्वागतं मैत्री ह्यनुकंपा च मत्सरः
Generosity, welcome, friendship, compassion, and absence of envy—
वाराणसी कुरुक्षेत्रं प्रयागं पुष्कराणि च
Varanasi, Kurukshetra, Prayaga, and Pushkara—
मूलस्थानं महापुण्यं पुंडीरस्वामिकं तथा
The original holy place, the great sacred site, and also the abode of Pundarika.
इत्येते कीर्तिता देशाः सुरसिद्धनिषेविताः गोसिद्धमुनि वासाश्च देशाः पुण्याः प्रकीर्तिताः
Thus these regions have been named, frequented by gods and siddhas; O sage, the dwellings of cows, siddhas, and sages have also been declared holy places.
सूर्यायतनसंस्थानां यद्यदल्पं तु दीयते
If even a little is given to those established at the abode of the Sun—
ग्रहणं चंद्रसूर्याभ्यामुत्तरायणमुत्तमम्
The eclipses of the moon and sun, and the auspicious northern course—
दिनच्छिद्राणि संक्रांतिः पुण्यं विषुपदं खग
The intervals of the day, the solstice, and the sacred equinox, O bird—
