कृषिपाल्ये च वाणिज्ये क्रोधसत्यक्षयादिभिः
In agriculture, animal husbandry, and trade, through anger, falsehood, loss, and the like—
कंडनी पेषणी चुल्ली उदकुंभः प्रमार्जनी
The pestle, grinding stone, hearth, water pot, and cleaning broom—
सूर्याग्निगुरुपूजाभिः पापैरेतैर्न लिप्यते
By worshipping the Sun, fire, and teacher, one is not tainted by sins committed with these.
सूर्याग्निगुरुनैवेद्यं यावत्स्यादन्नसंख्यया
The offering to the Sun, fire, and teacher should be as much as the quantity of food available.
घृतपूपयुतैः सिक्तैः पुण्यं दशगुणोत्तरम्
When sprinkled with clarified butter and sweet cakes, the merit becomes ten times greater.
षष्टिकौदननैवेद्यं सहस्रगुणितं फलम्
The offering of rice cooked from sixty-day paddy yields a thousandfold result.
भक्ष्यान्नपानदानानि तत्फलानि तथातथा भक्ष्यं निवेद्य पूर्वोक्तमक्षयं लभते फलम्
The results of giving food, drink, and edibles are as described; by offering the previously mentioned food, one attains inexhaustible merit.
एवं यः कुरुते भक्तिं देव देवे दिवाकरे 1.188.
Whoever thus offers devotion to the god of gods, the Sun, O Divākara—
गंगास्नानमिदं पुण्यं दर्शनात्प्राप्नुयाद्रवेः
He attains the merit of bathing in the Ganges simply by seeing this sacred rite.
मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यः प्रणम्य शिरसा रविम्
He is freed from all sins by bowing his head to the Sun.
युगपत्पूजितास्तेन ब्रह्मविष्णु महेश्वराः
By him, Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara are worshipped simultaneously.
तुष्यंति पितरस्तस्य सुकृष्टेनेव कर्षुकाः
His ancestors are pleased, just as skilled farmers are pleased with good cultivation.
अपि नः स कुले कंचिदुद्धरेत्किं खगेश्वर
O lord of birds, will he not uplift someone from our lineage?
तृप्यंति पितरस्तस्य गायंति च पितामहाः
His ancestors are satisfied, and his grandfathers sing.
पुराणविदमायांतं दृष्ट्वैव सह संस्थिताः
Seeing the knower of the Purāṇas approaching, they stand together.
अनुग्रहाय लोकानां श्रद्धायाश्च परीक्षणे
For the blessing of the worlds and the testing of faith.
तस्मादतिथिमायांतमग्रे गच्छेत्कृतांजलिः
Therefore, one should approach the arriving guest first, with joined palms.
रूपान्वितं विरूपं वा मलिनं मलिनांबरम् 1.188.
Whether he is handsome or deformed, dirty or clothed in soiled garments—
भोजकानां शरीरेषु नित्यं सन्निहितो रविः अधोमुखोर्द्ध्वपादास्ते पतंति नरकाग्निषु
The sun is always present in the bodies of those who eat; those who lie with their faces downward and feet upward fall into the fires of hell.
कृमिभिर्भिन्नवदनास्तप्यमानाश्च वह्निना
Their faces are torn by worms, and they are tormented by fire.
ये चापवादं शृण्वंति विमूढा ब्राह्मणेषु वै
And those fools who listen to slander against Brāhmaṇas—
सर्वेषामेव पात्राणां सत्पात्रं जापकः परः
Of all recipients, the one who recites sacred texts is the highest worthy recipient.
सौरधर्मेषु सप्ताश्वसंवादः जपोपेक्षे तथा दानं सह पात्रेण नश्यति
In the duties related to the sun, there is the dialogue of the seven horses; neglect of recitation and giving, along with the worthy recipient, is destroyed.
भस्मनीव हुतं हव्यं यथा होतुश्च निष्फलम्
Just as an offering poured into ashes is fruitless for the sacrificer,
यथा षण्ढोऽफलः स्त्रीषु यथा गौर्गवि चाफला
As a eunuch is fruitless with women, as a cow is fruitless among oxen,
लोहोडुपेन प्रतरन्निमज्जत्युदके यथा
As iron sinks in water when crossed with a wooden float,
कारुण्यात्सर्वभूतेषु श्रद्धया यत्प्रदीयते
Whatever is given with compassion and faith to all beings,
दीनांधकृपणानां च बालवृद्धातुरेषु च
And to the poor, the blind, the miserable, as well as to children, the aged, and the sick,
न हि स्वार्थं समुद्दिश्य प्रतिगृह्णंति साधवः
Indeed, the virtuous do not accept gifts with their own interest in mind.
दातुरेवोपकाराय वदत्यर्थी ददस्व मे
The petitioner says, 'Give to me,' only for the benefit of the giver.
