व्रतानि मनसा त्विष्टसंकल्प इति मानसः
Vows undertaken with firm resolve in the mind are called mental vows.
अनध्यायं स्वयं सम्यग्वर्जयेत्फलसाधनम्
One should properly avoid prohibited days, as they are obstacles to the attainment of results.
अशुभानि निमित्तानि उत्पातो विकृतं तथा
Inauspicious omens, portents, and unnatural occurrences also arise.
अनध्यायाश्च दृष्टार्था अदृष्टार्थास्तथापरे
There are days when study is forbidden for seen and unseen reasons.
अभक्ष्यं सर्ववर्णानां शावाशौचं खगाधिप 1.186.
Food forbidden to all castes, impurity from corpses, O lord of birds,
जातिदुष्टं क्रियादुष्टं कालदुष्टं विभूषितम्
That which is corrupted by birth, by action, or by time, even if adorned,
लशुनं गृंजनं चैव पलांडुं कवकानि च
Garlic, asafoetida, onions, and mushrooms as well,
नो भुञ्जीत क्रियादुष्टं दुष्टं च पतितैः पृथक्
One should not eat what is corrupted by action, or what is defiled by the fallen, separately.
दधिभक्ष्यविकाराश्च मधुवर्ज्यास्तदिष्यते
Curd preparations and their derivatives are to be avoided with honey, as prescribed.
सुरालशुनसंस्पृष्टं पेयूषादिसमन्वितम्
That which has come into contact with liquor or garlic, or is mixed with gruel and the like,
शूद्रसक्तं खंडसक्तं ज्ञेयमाश्रयदूषितम्
Food associated with Shudras or with sugarcane, is to be known as tainted by association.
सहृल्लेखं तु तज्ज्ञेयं पुरीषं तु स्वभावतः
Food mixed with excrement is to be known as such, and excrement is by nature so.
पायसं क्षीरपाकादि तस्मिन्नेव दिने तथा
Rice cooked with milk and similar preparations, on the same day,
प्राणात्यये प्रोक्षितं च श्राद्धे च द्विजकाम्यया
In cases of life-threatening danger, or when purified, and at a śrāddha for the sake of a twice-born,
प्रेताशुद्धिः सपिंडानां तस्मिन्नेव मृते सति 1.186.
The impurity of death for relatives is observed only when the person has died.
दशाहादित्रिके भागे वर्णशो न भवंति हि
In the ten-day period and the threefold division, it does not apply by caste.
ऊर्ध्वं दशाहादेकाहश्रवणे सति जायते
After the ten days, if the news is heard on a single day, it arises.
समानोदकता प्रोक्ता जन्मनाम्नोरपर्यये
Equality of water-rites is declared when there is no interruption of birth names.
आ दंतजन्मनः सद्य आचूडान्नैष्ठिकी स्मृता
From the birth of teeth, the niṣṭhā purification is prescribed up to the cūḍā and annaprāśana rites.
तेषामपि तदेकं स्याद्वयोवस्थाप्यपेक्ष्यते
Even for them, that one rule applies, but it depends on the stage of life.
गर्भस्रावे त्रिरात्रेण उदक्या शुध्यते तथा
In the case of miscarriage, a woman becomes pure after three nights by observing the water rite.
द्विजानां त्वेवमेव स्यात्पित्रर्थं मातुरेव वा
For twice-born men, the same rule applies, whether it is for the sake of the father or the mother.
असपिंडे तु निर्हारात्त्रिरात्रमपि मानवः
But for one not of the same family line, after removal of the body, a man is purified even in three nights.
शुध्येद्द्विजो दशाहेन जन्महानौ द्वियोनिषु
A twice-born is purified in ten days upon the death of a relative from the twice-born line.
उक्तशौचं यथान्यायं शारीरं तत्त्वदर्शिभिः 1.186.
The bodily purification appropriate to each case has been taught by the seers according to proper rule.
तैजसी मार्तिकी वीर वारिशुद्धिः स्मृता तथा
Purification by fire, by earth, by valor, and by water is thus remembered.
अशुद्धं नैव किंचिद्धि द्रव्यमस्तीति खेचर
O sky-walker, truly, there is no substance that is inherently impure.
स्नानं शौचं च कर्तव्यं द्रव्यशौचादनंतरम्
Bathing and purification must be performed after the purification of objects.
नैमित्तिकं क्षुराशौचं तेन पापाद्विशुध्यति
Occasional shaving is prescribed, by which one is cleansed from sin.
