व्रीडिता तु कथां कृत्वा भूपतिं प्राह कामिनी
Feeling ashamed, the passionate woman, after telling her story, spoke to the king.
चिरंदेवं तु संप्राप्य कामांधा त्वां समागता शापिता देवदेवेन नरभोगकरी ह्यहम्
Having reached the god for a long time, blinded by desire, I came to you; I was cursed by the lord of gods to become one who enjoys men.
इति श्रुत्वा स भूपालो धर्मात्मा शीलविग्रहः
Hearing this, the king, righteous and the embodiment of good conduct, [responded].
चिरंदेवस्तु राजन्यो मत्पुत्र इव वर्तते
Ciramdeva, the Kshatriya, behaves like my own son.
लज्जिता सा तदा देवी स्नुषेवः च ववर्त वै
Then the goddess, feeling ashamed, behaved like a daughter-in-law.
इत्युक्त्वा भूपतिं प्राह वैतालो रुद्रकिंकरः
Having said this, the vetala, servant of Rudra, spoke to the king.
सत्यं धर्मश्च वेताल शृणु तत्कारणं शुभम्
O Vetala, truth and righteousness—listen to the auspicious reason for that.
नृपाणां परमो धर्मः सर्वोपकरणं स्मृतः
The highest duty of kings is remembered as benefiting all.
भृत्येन च कृतं कर्म तच्छृणुष्व वदाम्यहम् सेवा वृत्तिः कृता सर्वा यथान्यैर्न नरैः कृता
Hear the deed done by the servant, which I will tell you; all service and livelihood were performed, as by others, not by men.
पश्चाद्भूपतिना ज्ञातः संकटे बृहदागते 3.2.8.
Afterwards, the king came to know, in a great crisis that had arisen.
महाप्रवीणश्च मतस्तमाह स च भूपतिम्
And the one very skilled in knowledge spoke to the king.
राजन्कामपुरे रम्ये वीरसिंहो महीपतिः
O king, in the delightful city of Kamapura, there was a great king named Virasimha.
हिरण्यदत्तस्तत्रैव वैश्यो धनमदान्वितः
There, a merchant named Hiraṇyadatta, filled with pride in his wealth, resided.
अवसत्सुखतो नित्यं वसंते कुसुमप्रिया
He lived always in comfort, delighting in the flowers of spring.
गच्छन्तीं तां समालोक्य धर्मदत्तात्मजो बली
Seeing her as she was going, the strong son of Dharmadatta beheld her.
सा तु तं निर्जने स्थाने प्रोवाच विनयान्विता
She, endowed with modesty, spoke to him in a secluded place.
विवाहे सति पूर्वं त्वां भजामि दशमेऽहनि
If marriage takes place, I will come to you on the tenth day.
तथेति मत्वा तां त्यक्त्वा निजगेहं समागतः
Thinking 'so be it,' he left her and returned to his own house.
मदपालाय वैश्याय मणिग्रीवसुताय च
To Madapāla the merchant and to Maṇigrīva's daughter as well.
नवमेऽहनि तत्स्वामी गृहीत्वा कामिनीं बलात् 3.2.9.
On the ninth day, her master forcefully took the woman.
अरुदत्सा तु तत्पत्नी मित्रवाक्येन कर्षिता
She, that wife, wept, distressed by the words of her friend.
किं रोदिषि मदापूर्णे सत्यं कथय शोभने
Why do you weep, O one filled with pride? Tell the truth, O beautiful one.
यदि नायामि पार्श्वे त्वां सोमदत्त धनोत्तम
If I do not come to your side, O Somadatta, best of the wealthy,
इति वाक्येन बद्धाहं यास्याम्यद्य तदंतिके
By these words I am bound; today I will go to him.
सुष्वाप सा तु तत्पार्श्वे ह्यगमत्कामविह्वला
She slept well at his side, overcome by desire.
वचश्चोवाच लोभात्मा कुत्र यासि च सुन्दरि
The greedy one spoke these words: 'Where are you going, O beautiful one?'
कामालसा तु तं चौरमुवाच मदविह्वला
Languid with desire, she replied to that thief, her mind disturbed by passion.
चौरस्तामाह भोः सुभ्रूर्भूषण देहि मेऽबले
The thief said to her, 'O lovely-browed one, give me your ornament, O gentle lady.'
आलिंग्योपपतिं मित्रं तुभ्यं दास्यामि भूषणम्
Embracing your lover, your friend, I will give you the ornament.
दृष्ट्वा तामब्रवीद्वैश्यः कथं याता स्मरालसे 3.2.9.
Seeing her, the merchant said, 'How have you come, weary from love?'
