शृणु त्वं खगशार्दूल गदतो मम कृत्स्नशः
Hear, O tiger among birds, as I speak to you fully.
पूर्वाह्णे भोजयेद्विप्रानष्टौ सर्वान्प्रदक्षिणान्
In the forenoon, he should feed eight Brahmins, all circumambulated.
ऋजून्वै कृतपान्दत्त्वा सत्येन विधिवत्खग
He should give them rice cooked straight, with truth, according to the proper method, O bird.
गन्धपुष्पादिकं सर्वं कुर्याद्विप्रप्रदक्षिणम्
He should offer all fragrant substances and flowers, circumambulating the Brahmins.
गुडमिश्रं खगश्रेष्ठ सवस्त्रमोदनं परम्
O best of birds, he should give excellent cooked rice mixed with jaggery and with cloth.
एवं भुक्तेषु विप्रेषु दद्यात्पिंडा न्समाहितः
When the Brahmins have eaten in this way, he should offer the piṇḍas with concentration.
कृत्वा तु मंडपं वीर चतुरस्रं प्रदक्षिणम् 1.185.
Having constructed a pavilion, O hero, make a circumambulation around the square.
सव्येन पाणिना वीर विधिवत्खगसत्तम
With the left hand, O hero, perform the prescribed rites, O best among birds.
पितुर्मात्रे तु तन्मात्रे निर्वपेद्विधिव त्खग
For the father and mother, and for their mothers, offer the prescribed oblations, O bird.
एवमुद्दिश्य वै मातॄः षट् पिंडान्निर्वपेत्खग नवमं सर्वदैवत्यं भोजयेद्विधिवत्खग
Thus, having invoked the mothers, offer six rice balls, O bird; the ninth is for all the deities, and should be offered according to the rite, O bird.
नांदीमुखांस्तानुद्दिश्य पितॄन्पंच द्विजोत्तमान्
Having invoked the Nāndīmukha ancestors, offer five to the best of twice-born.
इत्थं श्राद्धद्वयं कुयाद्वृद्धौ कश्यपनंदन
Thus, two Śrāddha rites should be performed at the increase, O son of Kaśyapa.
अथैवं भोजयेच्छ्राद्धे तत्पूर्वं तु प्रवर्तयेत्
Then, having thus fed at the Śrāddha, let the preceding rites be commenced.
अग्न्यभावे तु विप्रस्य पाणावेवोपपादयेत्
In the absence of fire, let the Brāhmaṇa be given water in the palm.
पूर्व पात्रे यदन्नं च यच्चान्नमुपकल्पितम्
Whatever food is in the previous vessel, and whatever else is prepared.
द्वौ दैवेऽथर्वणौ विप्रौ प्राङ्मुखावुपवेशयेत्
Let two Brāhmaṇas for the deities and Atharvaṇa, seated facing east, be arranged.
त्रीणि श्राद्धे पवित्राणि दौहित्रः कुतुपास्तिलाः 1.185.
Three purifying items are used in the Śrāddha: the daughter's son, the kutupa vessel, and sesame seeds.
दौहित्रं खंडमित्युक्तं ललाटाय प्रजापते
The daughter's son is called 'khaṇḍa', and is offered to the forehead of Prajāpati.
सव्यादंसात्परिभ्रष्टं नाभिदेशे व्यवस्थितम्
If fallen from the left shoulder, and settled near the navel.
पितृदेवमनुष्याणां पूजनं भोजनं तथा
The worship and feeding of ancestors, deities, and humans.
परिधानकृते स्कंधे गृहस्थो योऽर्चयेत्पितॄन्
For the sake of the ritual garment, the householder who worships the ancestors on the shoulder.
वनस्थानां खगश्रेष्ठ यतीनां च महामते
For forest-dwellers, O best of birds, and for ascetics, O wise one.
हस्तौ प्रक्षाल्य गंडूषं यः पिबेदविचक्षणः
Having washed the hands, whoever drinks mouthfuls without discernment.
भोजनेष्वेव तिष्ठंति स्वस्ति कुर्वंति ये द्विजाः
Those Brāhmaṇas who remain at the meal and utter blessings.
दातारो नोभिवर्धंता वेदाः संत तिरेव च
May our benefactors increase, and may the Vedas and the virtuous flourish as well.
शुद्धिप्रकरणवर्णनम् भास्कर उवाच श्रावण्यां तु बलिः कार्यः सर्पाणां मंत्रपूर्वकः
Description of the section on purification. Bhāskara said: In the month of Śrāvaṇa, an offering for the serpents should be performed, preceded by mantras.
कार्यः प्रत्यवरोहस्तु मार्गशीर्ष्यां न संशयः
The pratyavarohana rite should be performed in Mārgaśīrṣa, without doubt.
काम्यानां सफलार्थं तु दोषप्राप्त्यर्थमेव च
For the fulfillment of desired aims, and also for the removal of faults, these are to be performed.
फलं केचिदुपात्तस्य दुरितस्य प्रचक्षते
Some declare that the result of an act performed with fault is itself faulty.
नित्यक्रियं तथा चान्ये अनुषंगात्फलं श्रुतिः
Others say that the result comes from the regular performance of rites, as stated in the scriptures.
