यत्तु वाचा प्रतिज्ञातं कर्मणा नोपपादितम्
And that which is promised by word but not fulfilled by deed,
वेदविद्याव्रतस्नाते श्रोत्रिये गृहमागते
To a Brahmin who is learned in the Vedas, devoted to vows, and has bathed, when he comes to the house,
मधु मांसं सुरां सोमं लाक्षाद्यं लवणं तथा
Honey, meat, liquor, soma, lac and similar things, as well as salt,
गुडं तिलं तथा नीलं केशान्गोधूमकान्यवान्
Molasses, sesame, indigo, hair, wheat, and barley,
औष्ट्रमाविकदुग्धं च अन्नं मृतकसूतके
Camel's and sheep's milk, food from a woman in childbirth or from a corpse,
गवां शृंगोदके स्नातो महानद्याश्च संगमे
Bathing in water from the horns of cows, or at the confluence of a great river,
वेदविद्याव्रतस्नातः शुना दष्टो द्विजः खग
A twice-born who is learned in the Vedas, devoted to vows, and has bathed, if bitten by a dog, O Khaga,
तिष्ठन्वाप्यथ वा गच्छञ्छुना दष्टो द्विजः खग 1.184.
Whether standing, sitting, or walking, if bitten by a dog, O Khaga, a twice-born—
व्रतिनश्चापि दष्टस्य त्रिरात्रं क्षपणं स्मृतम्
For one observing a vow who has been bitten, a three-night fast is prescribed.
ब्राह्मणी तु शुना दष्टा सोमे दृष्टं समाचरेत्
If a Brahmin woman is bitten by a dog, she should perform the rite seen in the Soma ritual.
यां दिशं व्रजते सोमस्तां दिशं चावलोकयेत्
She should look toward the direction in which Soma proceeds.
क्रिमिभिर्दश्यते यश्च निष्कृतिं तस्य वच्मि ते
If someone is bitten by worms, I will tell you the expiation for him.
गवां तत्र पुरीषेण त्रिकालं स्नानमाचरेत्
He should bathe three times daily with cow dung in that case.
अथ नाभ्याः प्रदष्टस्य आपादाद्विनतात्मज
Now, for one bitten near the navel, O son of Vinata, from foot to navel—
नाभिकण्ठांतरे वीर यदा चोत्पद्यते कृमिः
When a worm arises within the area between the navel and the throat, O hero—
यदा दशंति शिरसि कृमयो विनतात्मज
When worms bite the head, O son of Vinata—
मृतान्नं मधु मांसं च यस्तु भुञ्जीत ब्राह्मणः
A Brahmin who eats food from the dead, honey, or meat—
मातृश्राद्धविधिवर्णनम् आदित्य उवाच रात्रौ श्राद्धं न कुर्वीत राक्षसी कीर्तिता हि सा
Description of the rite for the mother's śrāddha. The Sun said: One should not perform śrāddha at night, for it is declared to be demonic.
अकृत्वा मातृयज्ञं तु यः श्राद्धं परिवेषयेत्
Whoever serves śrāddha without first performing the mother's sacrifice—
नांदीमुखाश्च पितरः कथं पूजामवाप्नुयुः
How can the ancestors in the form of Nāndīmukha receive worship?
शृणु त्वं खगशार्दूल गदतो मम कृत्स्नशः
Hear, O tiger among birds, as I speak to you fully.
पूर्वाह्णे भोजयेद्विप्रानष्टौ सर्वान्प्रदक्षिणान्
In the forenoon, he should feed eight Brahmins, all circumambulated.
ऋजून्वै कृतपान्दत्त्वा सत्येन विधिवत्खग
He should give them rice cooked straight, with truth, according to the proper method, O bird.
गन्धपुष्पादिकं सर्वं कुर्याद्विप्रप्रदक्षिणम्
He should offer all fragrant substances and flowers, circumambulating the Brahmins.
गुडमिश्रं खगश्रेष्ठ सवस्त्रमोदनं परम्
O best of birds, he should give excellent cooked rice mixed with jaggery and with cloth.
एवं भुक्तेषु विप्रेषु दद्यात्पिंडा न्समाहितः
When the Brahmins have eaten in this way, he should offer the piṇḍas with concentration.
कृत्वा तु मंडपं वीर चतुरस्रं प्रदक्षिणम् 1.185.
Having constructed a pavilion, O hero, make a circumambulation around the square.
सव्येन पाणिना वीर विधिवत्खगसत्तम
With the left hand, O hero, perform the prescribed rites, O best among birds.
पितुर्मात्रे तु तन्मात्रे निर्वपेद्विधिव त्खग
For the father and mother, and for their mothers, offer the prescribed oblations, O bird.
एवमुद्दिश्य वै मातॄः षट् पिंडान्निर्वपेत्खग नवमं सर्वदैवत्यं भोजयेद्विधिवत्खग
Thus, having invoked the mothers, offer six rice balls, O bird; the ninth is for all the deities, and should be offered according to the rite, O bird.
