हस्तदत्तास्तु ये स्नेहाल्लवणव्यंजनादयः
Those who, out of affection, give salt, condiments, and other items by hand,
आयसेन तु पात्रेण यदन्नमुपदीयते
Whatever food is served in a metal vessel,
अंगुल्या दंतकाष्ठं यत्प्रत्यक्षलवणं च यत्
Whatever is directly salt, or a tooth-stick given by a finger,
मुखे पर्युषिते नित्यं भवत्यप्रयतो द्विजः
When it remains in the mouth, a twice-born always becomes impure.
पुष्पालंकारवस्त्राणि गंध माल्यानुलेपनम्
Flowers, ornaments, garments, fragrance, garlands, and ointments,
गृहांते वसते मूर्खो दूरे चास्य गुणान्वितः
A fool dwells at the edge of the house, while a virtuous person stays far away.
ब्राह्मणातिक्रमो नास्ति विप्रे वेदविवर्जिते
There is no transgression against a Brahmin who is devoid of Vedic knowledge.
सन्निकृष्टमधीयानं ब्राह्मणं यो व्यतिक्रमेत् 1.184.
Whoever transgresses against a Brahmin who is studying nearby,
किं तु यत्ते पुरा देव श्रुतं वाक्यं महात्मनः
But what you heard long ago, O god, the statement of the great-souled,
गदतो नारदस्यैव शृणु त्वं विबुधाधिप
Listen to the words spoken by Narada himself, O lord of the wise.
सत्यनिष्ठं द्विजं यस्तु शुक्लजातिं प्रियंवदम्
He who transgresses against a twice-born who is devoted to truth, of the white lineage, and speaks kindly,
अतिक्रम्य नरो घोरं नरकं पातयेत्खग
Such a man, O Khaga, causes himself to fall into a terrible hell.
तस्मान्नातिक्रमेद्राजा ब्राह्मणं प्रातिवेशिकम्
Therefore, a king should not transgress against a neighboring Brahmin.
भागिनेयं विशेषेण तथा बंधुं ग्रहाधिप अतिक्रम्य महद्रौद्रं रौरवं नरकं व्रजेत्
Especially against a nephew or a relative, or the lord of the house; if one transgresses, he goes to the dreadful Raurava hell.
ममाप्यवगतं वीर ब्राह्मणं न परीक्षयेत्
Even I have understood, O hero, that a Brahmin should not be tested.
सर्वदेवमयं विप्रं सर्वलोकमयं तथा
A Brahmin is composed of all the gods, and likewise embodies all the worlds.
केवलं चिंतयेज्जातिं न गुणान्विनतात्मज
One should consider only the lineage, not the qualities, O humble son.
यस्त्वासन्नमतिक्रम्य ब्राह्मणं पतितादृते 1.184.
He who transgresses against a Brahmin nearby, except one who has fallen,
देवकर्मविनाशेन ब्रह्मस्वहरणेन च वियोन्यां क्षिपते यस्तु वियोनिमधिगच्छति
By destroying divine rites or by stealing Brahmin property, he casts himself into a lower womb and attains a degraded birth.
मा ददस्वेति यो ब्रूयाद्गवाग्निब्राह्मणेषु वै
He who says, 'Do not give,' regarding cows, fire, or Brahmins,
यत्तु वाचा प्रतिज्ञातं कर्मणा नोपपादितम्
And that which is promised by word but not fulfilled by deed,
वेदविद्याव्रतस्नाते श्रोत्रिये गृहमागते
To a Brahmin who is learned in the Vedas, devoted to vows, and has bathed, when he comes to the house,
मधु मांसं सुरां सोमं लाक्षाद्यं लवणं तथा
Honey, meat, liquor, soma, lac and similar things, as well as salt,
गुडं तिलं तथा नीलं केशान्गोधूमकान्यवान्
Molasses, sesame, indigo, hair, wheat, and barley,
औष्ट्रमाविकदुग्धं च अन्नं मृतकसूतके
Camel's and sheep's milk, food from a woman in childbirth or from a corpse,
गवां शृंगोदके स्नातो महानद्याश्च संगमे
Bathing in water from the horns of cows, or at the confluence of a great river,
वेदविद्याव्रतस्नातः शुना दष्टो द्विजः खग
A twice-born who is learned in the Vedas, devoted to vows, and has bathed, if bitten by a dog, O Khaga,
तिष्ठन्वाप्यथ वा गच्छञ्छुना दष्टो द्विजः खग 1.184.
Whether standing, sitting, or walking, if bitten by a dog, O Khaga, a twice-born—
व्रतिनश्चापि दष्टस्य त्रिरात्रं क्षपणं स्मृतम्
For one observing a vow who has been bitten, a three-night fast is prescribed.
ब्राह्मणी तु शुना दष्टा सोमे दृष्टं समाचरेत्
If a Brahmin woman is bitten by a dog, she should perform the rite seen in the Soma ritual.
