भोजको यस्तु वै श्राद्धं न करोति खगाधिप
O lord of birds, he who, being the host, does not perform śrāddha—
स याति नरकं घोरं तामिस्रं नाम नामतः
He goes to the dreadful hell called Tāmisra, by name.
अनूरुरुवाच न जानाति दिनं यस्तु न मासं विबुधाधिप श्राद्धं करोतु वै ताभ्यां विधिवद्वत्सरात्मकम्
Anūruru said: He who does not know the day or the month, O lord of the wise, should perform śrāddha according to the proper rule, based on the year.
यथा कुर्यात्खगश्रेष्ठ शृणु कृत्स्नं समासतः
O best of birds, listen in brief to how it should be performed in its entirety.
तेन कार्यममायां च श्राद्धं सांवत्सरं खग
Therefore, O bird, one should perform the annual śrāddha and other prescribed rites.
विशेषतो भोजनेन यो मां पूज्यते सदा 1.183.
Especially, whoever always worships me with food—
ममेष्टाः पितरो नित्यं गावो विप्राश्च सुव्रत
My beloved ancestors are always cows and Brāhmaṇas, O virtuous one.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराणे ब्राह्मे पर्वणि सप्तमीकल्पे सौरधर्मे श्राद्धविधिकथनं नाम त्र्यशीत्युत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and eighty-third chapter, named 'The Description of the Śrāddha Rite in the Sauradharma on the Seventh Day,' in the Brahma Parvan of the glorious Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa.
ब्राह्मणधर्मविधिवर्णनम् प्रख्याते प्रत्ययेनैव प्रश्नपूर्वं प्रतिग्रहः
Description of the duties of a Brāhmaṇa: Acceptance of gifts is permitted only after inquiry and with certainty.
वेद विक्रयनिर्दिष्टं स्त्रिया चावर्जितं धनम्
Wealth obtained by selling the Veda, or acquired by a woman, is prescribed as unacceptable.
अनुयोगेन यो दद्याद्ब्राह्मणाय प्रतिग्रहम्
If someone gives a gift to a Brāhmaṇa after being asked, it is considered an acceptance.
वेदाक्षराणि यावंति नियुज्यन्तेर्थकारणात्
As many syllables as there are in the Veda, they are to be employed for the sake of meaning.
वैश्वदेवेन यो हीन आदित्यस्य च कर्मणः
Whoever is deficient in the Vaiśvadeva or Āditya rites—
येषामध्ययनं नास्ति ये च केचिदनग्नयः
Those who do not study, and those who are without sacred fires—
अकृत्वा वैश्वदेवं तु यो भुङ्क्ते सोऽबुधः खग
Whoever eats without performing the Vaiśvadeva rite, O bird, is ignorant.
प्रियो वा यदि वा द्वेष्यो मूर्खः पंडित एव च
Whether dear or disliked, foolish or learned—
नैकग्रामीणमतिथिं विप्रसांगतिकं तथा
One should not consider as a guest a Brāhmaṇa who is from the same village or who is a companion.
अचिंत्यः स तु वै नाम्ना वैश्वदेव उपागतः 1.184.
But one who comes for Vaiśvadeva by name is not to be disregarded.
यावच्च प्राप्नुयादन्नं कृताशीः स्नातको द्विजः
As long as he obtains food, a twice-born who has bathed and received blessings may eat.
ग्रासमात्रा भवेद्भिक्षा चतुष्कालं चतुर्गुणम्
The proper alms should be the measure of a mouthful, four times a day.
आरूढो नैष्ठिकं धर्मं यस्तु प्रच्यवते पुनः
If one who has ascended to the vow of lifelong celibacy falls away again—
आरूढपतितापत्या ब्राह्मणो वृषलेन च
A Brāhmaṇa whose offspring is from a fallen woman or from a Śūdra—
ब्राह्मणी कुलटा नित्यं स्वकं त्यक्त्वा पतिं खग
A Brahmin woman who is promiscuous always abandons her own husband, O bird.
उत्पद्यते तु यस्तस्या ब्राह्मणेन महामते
Whatever child is born to her from a Brahmin, O wise one,
यस्तु प्रव्रजितो भूत्वा पुनः सेवति मैथुनम् पंचगव्येन शुद्धिः स्यादित्याह मम देहकृत्
If one who has become a renunciate again engages in sexual intercourse, purification is achieved by the five products of the cow, so says the maker of my body.
अभोज्यं ब्राह्मणस्यान्नं वृषलेन निमंत्रितम्
Food offered to a Brahmin by a low-born person is not to be eaten.
ब्राह्मणान्नं ददच्छूद्रः शूद्रान्नं ब्राह्मणो ददत्
A Shudra giving Brahmin food, or a Brahmin giving Shudra food,
उपनिक्षेपधर्मेण शूद्रान्नं च पचेद्द्विजः 1.184.
A twice-born who cooks Shudra food according to the rule of offering,
शूद्रान्नं शूद्रसंपर्कं शूद्रेण सह वासनम्
Shudra food, contact with Shudras, and dwelling together with a Shudra,
शूद्रान्नोपहता विप्रा विह्वला रतिलालसाः
Brahmins corrupted by Shudra food become agitated and eager for pleasure.
