अतीर्थगमनात्पुंसस्तीर्थे संगाहनात्स्त्रियाः
For a man, going to a place other than a tīrtha is prohibited; for a woman, gathering at a tīrtha is forbidden.
यौगपद्ये तु तीर्थानां विवाहक्रमशो व्रजेत्
When several tīrthas coincide, one should proceed to them in the order of marriage rites.
ब्राह्मादिभिर्विवाहैस्तु संस्कृतौ तौ खगाधिप
By the marriages beginning with the Brāhma type, both are consecrated, O lord of birds.
ब्राह्मो दैवस्तथार्षश्च प्राजापत्यः खगा धिप
The Brāhma, Daiva, Ārṣa, and Prājāpatya marriages, O lord of birds,
प्रशस्ताः क्षत्रियादीनां विप्रादीनां तु मानतः
are praised for Kṣatriyas and others, and are honored by Brāhmaṇas and others.
क्षत्रियस्यापि देया तु प्रतिग्रहविवर्जिता पावनं पुरुषाणां तु विवाहं परिचक्षते
Even for a Kṣatriya, a wife should be given without accepting anything in return; marriage is declared to be purifying for men.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराणे सप्तमीकल्पे ब्राह्मे पर्वणि सूर्यारुणसंवादे विवाहविधिवर्णनं नाम द्व्यशीत्युत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the Śrī Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa, in the Saptamī Kalpa, in the Brāhma Parvan, in the dialogue between Sūrya and Aruṇa, this is the one hundred eighty-second chapter, named 'Description of the Marriage Rites.'
श्राद्धविधिकथावर्णनम् भास्कर उवाच भूतपित्रमरब्रह्ममनुष्याणां यथाविधि
Description of the rites of Śrāddha. Bhāskara said: For beings, ancestors, gods, and humans, as prescribed—
सदा सदान कृत्यानां फलार्थमपरे स्थिताः
Others are always engaged in actions for the sake of their results.
अतिथेः परितोषाय परिचर्या विधीयते
Service is prescribed for the satisfaction of the guest.
तिस्रोष्टकास्तु कर्तव्या मध्यावर्ती चतुर्थिका
Three offerings must be made, with a fourth in the middle.
प्रतिपदि क्रियते यत्तु चतुष्पार्वणमुच्यते
That which is performed on the first day is called the fourfold parva.
नित्यं नैमित्तिकं काम्यं वृद्धिश्राद्धं सपिंडनम् कर्मांगं नवमं प्रोक्तं वैदिकं दशमं स्मृतम्
The daily, occasional, and desired śrāddhas, the śrāddha for increase, the sapiṇḍana, the ninth is the limb of the rite, and the tenth is known as the Vedic.
अनूरुरुवाच यदेतद्भवता प्रोक्तं श्राद्धं द्वादशधा विभो
Anūruru said: O lord, this śrāddha which you have described as twelvefold—
नित्यं किमुच्यते श्राद्धं किं वा नैमित्तिकं भवेत्
Which śrāddha is called daily, and which is considered occasional?
वैश्वदेवविहीनं तु अशक्तावुदकेन तु
If one is unable to perform the Vaiśvadeva rite, it should be done with water.
एकोद्दिष्टं तु यच्छ्राद्धं तन्नैमित्तिकमुच्यते 1.183.
That śrāddha which is performed for a single individual is called naimittika (occasional).
कामयुक्तं हि तत्काम्यमभिप्रेतार्थसिद्धये
That which is accompanied by desire is called kāmya, for the attainment of a wished-for purpose.
वृद्धौ यत्क्रियते श्राद्धं वृद्धिश्राद्धं तदुच्यते
The śrāddha performed at the time of increase is called vṛddhi-śrāddha.
गंधोदकतिलैर्युक्तं कुर्यात्पात्रचतुष्टयम्
One should prepare four vessels filled with fragrant water and sesame seeds.
ये समाना इति द्वाभ्यामेतज्ज्ञेयं सपिंडनम्
This sapiṇḍana (joining of offerings) is to be understood in two cases: when they are declared to be the same.
दर्शे वै क्रियते यत्तु तत्पार्वणमुदाहृतम् गोभ्यश्च क्रियते श्राद्धं तद्गोष्ठश्राद्धमुच्यते
That which is performed on the new moon is called pārvaṇa; and the śrāddha performed for cows is called goṣṭha-śrāddha.
बहूनां विदुषां संपत्सुखार्थं पितृतृप्तये शुद्यर्थमिति तत्प्रोक्तं वैनतेय मनीषिभिः
For the prosperity and happiness of many learned ones, and for the satisfaction of the ancestors, it is prescribed for purification, O son of Vinatā, by the wise.
निषेककाले सोमे च सीमतोन्नयने तथा
At the time of conception, at the soma rite, and at the simantonnayana (hair-parting ceremony),
क्रियते देवमुद्दिश्य सप्तम्यादिषु यत्नतः तद्यत्नार्थमिति प्रोक्तं प्रदिशेच्च न संशयः
Whatever is performed with care for the gods on the seventh day and other occasions, that is called yatnārtha (for effort), and should be offered in the prescribed direction, without doubt.
शरीरोपचये श्राद्धमश्ववृद्ध्यर्थमेव च
Śrāddha is performed for bodily growth and also for the increase of horses.
सर्वेषामेव श्राद्धानां श्रेष्ठं सांवत्सरं मतम् 1.183.
Of all śrāddhas, the annual (sāṃvatsara) is considered the best.
मृतेऽहनि पुनर्यस्तु न कुर्याच्छ्राद्धमादरात्
If, on the day of death, one does not perform śrāddha with respect,
नाहं तस्य खगश्रेष्ठ पूजां गृह्णामि नो हरिः
O best of birds, neither I nor Hari accept his worship.
तस्माद्यत्नेन कर्तव्यं वर्षेवर्षे मृतेऽहनि
Therefore, it must be performed with effort every year on the day of death.
