तथौपनिषदं चाब्दं गोदानं च सुवर्णकम्
Likewise, the Upaniṣad study for a year, the gift of a cow, and of gold are prescribed.
वेदैकदेशपाठस्य उक्तं गृह्ये प्रपञ्चकम्
The recitation of a portion of the Veda is prescribed in the Gṛhya texts as fivefold.
उभयोर्वा तथा चान्या यथान्यायं यथाश्रुतम्

After that, he should marry a wife of his own varna, endowed with proper qualities.
स्वतन्त्रमन्ये चेच्छन्ति ह्यधिकारं द्विजोत्तमाः 1.182.
If some foremost twice-born desire independence, they may seek authority.
उद्वहेत द्विजो भार्यामसमानार्षगोत्रजाम्
A twice-born should marry a wife who is not of the same rishi lineage.
अष्टौ विवाहा वर्णानां संस्काराख्या इति श्रुतिः
There are eight kinds of marriages among the varnas, known as sacraments, according to the scripture.
यस्तु दोषवतीं कन्यामनाख्याय प्रय च्छति
But whoever gives a maiden with faults without declaring them—
पितुर्गृहे तु या कन्या रजः पश्यत्यसंस्कृता
And a maiden who, in her father's house, sees her menses without having been consecrated—
यस्तु तां वरयेत्कन्यां ब्राह्मणो ज्ञानदुर्बलः
And if a Brahmin lacking in knowledge chooses such a maiden—
सर्वदोषान्हि विख्याप्य स्त्रिया वा पुरुषस्य वा
All faults, whether of the woman or the man, must indeed be made known.
गौरी कन्या प्रधाना वै मध्यमा कन्यका स्मृता
A maiden called Gauri is considered the best; the middling one is called Kanyakā.
रजस्वला नग्निका च देवकन्या च का भवेत्
Who is a menstruating girl, a naked girl, or a divine maiden?
अव्यञ्जनयुता कन्या कुचहीना च नग्निका
A maiden lacking secondary sexual characteristics or without breasts is called a naked girl.
सप्तवर्षा भवेद्गौरी दशवर्षा तु नग्निका 1.182.
A Gauri is seven years old; a naked girl is ten years old.

Soma enjoys a maiden who is endowed with all characteristics; among those with breasts, the Gandharvas, and among those with menses, Agni is said to preside.

She destroys sons by her characteristics, and by her breasts she destroys the lineage.
तस्मादव्यञ्जनोपेतामरजस्कपयोधराम्

अन्नं तस्य न भोक्तव्यं वृथा पाको हि स स्मृतः
Her food should not be eaten; such food is considered uselessly cooked.
प्राणायामं त्रिरभ्यस्य घृतं प्राश्य विशुद्ध्यति कृत्वा तस्यां समुत्सर्गमतिकृच्छ्रो विशोधनम्
Having practiced breath control three times and consumed ghee, one becomes purified; after doing this, the act of expulsion there is a most difficult purification.
उद्वाहयेत्सगोत्रां च तनयां मातुलस्य च
One may marry a girl of the same lineage, as well as the daughter of one's maternal uncle.
असपिण्डा तु या मातुरसगोत्रा च या पितुः
She who is not of the same piṇḍa on the mother's side, and she who is not of the same lineage on the father's side—
अरुण उवाच दारकर्म किमुक्तं वै यदुक्तं भवता इदम्
Aruna said: What has been stated regarding marriage rites, and what is it that you have declared here?
तदुक्तं दारकर्मेति द्वाभ्यां योगात्तु मैथुने
That which has been stated is the marriage rite; by the union of two, through sexual intercourse.
नोद्वहेत्कपिलां कन्यां नाधिकांगीं न रोगिणीम् 1.182.
One should not marry a tawny-haired girl, nor one with excessive limbs, nor one who is diseased.
ऋक्षवृक्षनदीनाम्नीं नान्यपर्वतनामिकाम्
Nor one named after a constellation, a tree, a river, or another mountain.
यस्यास्तु न भवेद्भ्राता न विज्ञायेत वै पिता
A girl who has no brother, or whose father is not known—
