सुचिरं संभ्रमत्यस्मिन्दुःखदे च भवार्णवे
He wanders for a long time in this sorrowful ocean of worldly existence.
मानुष्यं दुर्लभं प्राप्य येऽर्चयंति दिवाकरम्
Having attained the rare human birth, those who worship the Sun—
सूर्यभक्तिपरा ये च ये च तद्गतमानसाः
Those who are devoted to the Sun, and those whose minds are fixed upon Him—
विविधानि मनोज्ञानि विविधाभरणाः स्त्रियः
Various delightful women adorned with various ornaments—
ये वांछन्ति महाभोगान्राज्यं वा त्रिदशा लये
Those who desire great enjoyments or sovereignty among the gods—
सौन्दर्यं जगतः ख्यातिः कीर्तिर्धर्मादयः स्मृताः
Beauty, fame in the world, renown, and dharma are said to arise.
तस्मात्संपूजयेत्सूर्यं सर्वदेवगणार्चितम्
Therefore, one should worship the Sun, who is honored by all the hosts of gods.
दानं च दुर्लभं तस्मै तद्धोमश्च सुदुर्लभः
Rare is the giving of gifts to Him, and rarer still is the offering of oblations.
सुदुर्लभतरं ज्ञेयं तदाराधनमुत्तमम्
His supreme worship is to be known as even more difficult to attain.
येषामिहेश्वरे भानौ नित्यं सूर्ये गतं मनः 1.173.
Those whose minds are always fixed on the Lord Sun here—
जिह्वाग्रे वर्तते यस्य सकलं तस्य जीवितम् ।। य एवं पूजयेद्भानुं श्रद्धया परयान्वितः। मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यः स नरो नात्र संशयः
For him whose tongue utters His name, his entire life is fulfilled; whoever worships Bhānu with supreme faith is freed from all sins—there is no doubt of this.
डाकिन्यो विविधाकारा राक्षसाः सपिशाचकाः
Ḍākinīs of various forms, and Rākṣasas together with Piśācas—
शत्रवो नाशमायांति संग्रामे जयमाप्नुयात्
Enemies are destroyed; victory is attained in battle.
धनमायुर्यशो विद्या प्रभावो ह्यतुलं तथा
Wealth, lifespan, fame, knowledge, and incomparable power likewise.
सूर्यस्तुतिवर्णनम् अरुण उवाच पूजयित्वा रविं भक्त्या ब्रह्मा बह्मत्वमागतः
Description of the praise of the Sun. Aruṇa said: Having worshipped Ravi with devotion, Brahmā attained greatness.
शंकरोऽपि जगन्नाथः पूजयित्वा दिवाकरम्
Even Śaṃkara, Lord of the Universe, worshipped Divākara.
सहस्राक्षोपि देवेश इन्द्रो भानुं तमोपहम्
Sahasrākṣa, Lord of the gods, Indra, worshipped Bhānu, the dispeller of darkness.
मातरो देवगंधर्वाः पिशाचोरगराक्षसाः
Mothers, gods, Gandharvas, Piśācas, serpents, and Rākṣasas.
सर्वमेतज्जगन्नित्यं भानौ देवे प्रतिष्ठितम्
All this world is perpetually established in the Sun, the god.
यो न पूजयते सूर्यं भास्करं तमसूदनम्
Whoever does not worship Sūrya, Bhāskara, the destroyer of darkness,
तस्मात्कार्यं हि तद्ध्यानं यावज्जीवं प्रतिज्ञया
Therefore, one should meditate on him, with a vow, for as long as one lives.
यस्तु संतिष्ठते नित्यं विना सूर्यस्य पूजनात्
He who always persists without worshipping Sūrya,
सूर्यं संपूज्य भुञ्जीत त्रिदशेशं दिवाकरम् मनुष्यचर्मणा नद्धः स रविर्नात्र संशयः
Having worshipped Sūrya, one should enjoy the lord of the gods, Divākara; bound by human skin, he is Ravi—there is no doubt.
न हि अर्कार्चनादन्यत्पुण्यमप्यधिकं भवेत् 1.174.
Indeed, there is no merit greater than the worship of Arka.
सूर्यभक्तागमाश्चैव सूर्यार्चनपरायणाः
Those who follow the teachings of Sūrya and are devoted to his worship,
सर्वद्वन्द्वसहा वीरा नीतिविध्युक्तचेतसः
Are heroes who endure all dualities, whose minds are instructed by the rules of conduct.
अमानिनो बुद्धिमन्तोऽव्यक्तस्पर्धा गतस्पृहाः
Without pride, intelligent, free from manifest rivalry, and devoid of longing.
स्वल्पवाचः सुमनसः शूराः शास्त्रविशारदाः
Of few words, good-minded, courageous, and skilled in scripture.
दंभमत्सरनिर्मुक्तास्तृष्णालोभविवर्जिताः
Freed from deceit and envy, devoid of thirst and greed.
विषयेष्वपि निर्लेपाः पद्मपत्रमिवांभसा
Even amidst sense objects, they remain untouched, like a lotus leaf by water.
