दैवपर्वोत्सवे श्राद्धे पुण्येषु दिवसेषु च
On occasions of divine festivals, ancestral rites, and auspicious days,
पितरः सर्वदेवानां सूर्यमाश्रित्य संस्थिताः
the ancestors of all the gods are established, taking refuge in the Sun.
यदा च श्रद्धया युक्तं प्रसक्तं रविपूजनम्
And whenever worship of the Sun is performed with faith and devotion,
भोजकस्य महाराज दिवसेनापि यत्फलम् 1.172.
O great king, the fruit gained by the one who offers food is equal to that obtained in the realm of the gods.
यः पश्यति प्रसन्नात्मा यो न द्वेष्टि न कांक्षति
He who beholds with a serene mind, who neither hates nor desires,
ज्ञानविज्ञानसम्पन्नः सूर्यभक्त्या समन्वितः
who is endowed with knowledge and wisdom, and is united with devotion to the Sun,
सूर्यधर्माद्भवेज्ज्ञानं ज्ञानाद्वैराग्यसंभवः
From the dharma of the Sun arises knowledge, and from knowledge, detachment is born.
सूर्ययोगाच्च सर्वज्ञः परिपूर्णः सुनिर्वृतः
And through union with the Sun, one becomes all-knowing, complete, and perfectly content.
सर्वेषामेव भूतानामुत्तमः पुरुषः स्मृतः
Among all beings, the supreme person is regarded as the highest.
ग्रन्थिभ्यो वेदविद्वांसस्तेभ्यस्त त्त्वार्थचिंतकाः
Among those who know the Vedas from the texts, those who contemplate the essence of truth are superior.
ज्ञानार्थकोटिकोटिभ्यो वरिष्ठा योगिनो मताः
Among countless millions who seek knowledge, the yogis are considered the best.
योगज्ञा योगनिष्ठाश्च पितरो योगसंभवाः
The ancestors are born of yoga; they are knowers of yoga and established in yoga.
सर्वज्ञानतपोदानैः कृतैर्दत्तैश्च यत्फलम्
Whatever fruit is obtained by all-knowing austerities, gifts, and offerings,
यश्च द्रव्यकलापात्मा दक्षिणा हविर्ऋत्विजः 1.172.
and by the one who is the essence of all collections of offerings, the fee, the oblation, and the priest,
ब्रह्मचर्यं तपो मौनं क्षांतिराहारलाघवम्
Celibacy, austerity, silence, forgiveness, and moderation in food—
यच्च दिष्टं विशिष्टं च न्यायप्राप्तं च यद्भवेत
and whatever is prescribed, distinguished, or rightly obtained—
विवर्धनीं सहस्राणां सर्वसस्यप्ररोहिणीम्
which increases by thousands and causes all crops to grow,
एकच्छत्रां महीं कृत्वा द्विजेभ्यः प्रतिपादयेत्
having made the earth united under one umbrella, let it be given to the twice-born.
कन्यामलंकृतां दद्यादधनाय नराधिपा। द्विजाय वेदविदुषे कन्यादानं तदुच्यते
A king should give an adorned maiden to a poor man; to a Brahmin learned in the Vedas, this is called the gift of a maiden.
सर्वदोषविनिर्मुक्तां कुलयोग्यामलंकृताम्
She should be free from all faults, suitable to the family, and adorned.
एतत्समासतो ज्ञेयं वस्त्रदानस्य लक्षणम् अहोरात्रं न भुञ्जीत ह्युपवासस्य लक्षणम्
This, in brief, should be understood as the characteristic of the gift of cloth; one should not eat for a day and night, which is the mark of fasting.
चत्वारिंशत्समायुक्तं पिंडानां हि शतद्वयम्
With forty, and two hundred balls of food.
ऋषिभिः सर्वशास्त्रज्ञैस्तपोनिष्ठैर्जितेंद्रियैः
By sages who know all scriptures, devoted to austerity, and who have conquered their senses.
सूर्यावांतरस्थानानि पुण्यक्षेत्राणि निर्दिशेत् 1.172.
One should indicate the holy places within the intermediate regions of the sun.
दानान्यावसथं कुर्यादुद्यानं देव तागृहम्
One should establish gifts, residences, gardens, and temples for the gods.
क्षान्तिः स्पृहा तथा सत्यं दानं शीलं तपः श्रुतम्
Forbearance, aspiration, truthfulness, charity, good conduct, austerity, and learning.
यज्ञोपवासदानानि तपस्तीर्थर्फलानि च
Sacrifices, fasting, gifts, austerity, and the fruits of pilgrimage.
सूरे भक्तिः क्षमा सत्यं दशेंद्रियविनिग्रहः
Devotion to the sun, patience, truthfulness, and control of the ten senses.
सूर्यभक्तं द्विजं भक्त्या यः श्राद्धेषु च भोजयेत्
Whoever, with devotion, feeds a Brahmin devoted to the sun at a śrāddha ceremony.
बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन सूर्यभक्तं तु भोजयेत्
What need is there to say much here? One should indeed feed a devotee of the sun.
