देवं समाश्रितैः पूजा कर्तव्येयं त्रिभिः सदा
Worship of the deity must always be performed by those who have taken refuge in the gods, using three offerings.
देवार्थपुष्पहिंसायां न भवेत्तस्य हिंसकः
In the offering of flowers for the sake of the deity, one should not cause harm.
मगश्चाग्निपरो नित्यं तद्भक्तोऽतिथिपूजकः 1.171.
The Magian is always devoted to fire, a worshipper of that, and a host to guests.
देवाग्निस्वतिथौ भक्तं पचते चात्मकारणात्
For the sake of the gods, fire, and guests, the devotee cooks, motivated by selfless purpose.
देवार्थे पचनं येषां संतानार्थं तु मैथुनम्
Cooking for the sake of the gods, and union for the purpose of progeny—these are permitted.
जीवतृतीयभागेपि न प्रकुर्वीत वार्चनम्
Even in the third part of life, one should not perform ablutions.
न्यायोपार्जितवित्तः स्यादन्यायं परि वर्जयेत्
One should possess wealth acquired justly, and completely avoid what is unjust.
वाचोर्थे ब्रह्मचारी यः सूर्यपूजाग्नितत्परः
He who is celibate in word and intent, devoted to worship of the Sun and fire—
सर्वगंधविनिर्मुक्तः कंदमूलफलाशनः
Free from all fragrances, subsisting on bulbs, roots, and fruits—
निवृत्तः संगमेभ्यस्तु सूर्यध्यान रतः सदा
Abstaining from all unions, always engaged in meditation on the Sun—
मुंडोपनयनो व्यंगी शुक्लवासः समन्वितः
With a shaven head, sacred thread, and clad in white garments—
अथाव्यंगो महाराज धारयेद्यस्तु भोजकः
But if one is not deformed, O great king, the Bhojaka should wear these.
ध्वंसनं सर्वदुष्टानां सर्वपाप भयापहम् 1.171.
This destroys all evildoers and removes the fear of all sins.
गंधलेपविहीनोऽपि भावशुद्धो न दुष्यति
Even if devoid of fragrant ointments, one whose mind is pure is not defiled.
दृष्टिपूतं न्यसेत्पादं सत्यपूतं वचो वदेत्
Let one place the foot after purifying it with sight, and speak words purified by truth.
सर्व एवाश्रमा ज्ञेया भास्करांगसमुद्भवाः
All the stages of life should be understood as arising from the limbs of Bhāskara (the Sun).
सर्वव्रतानां परमं धर्मालयमनुत्तमम्
The supreme and unsurpassed abode of dharma among all vows is to be known.
संतोषः सत्यमस्तेयं ब्रह्मचर्यं तथाष्टमम्
Contentment, truthfulness, non-stealing, and celibacy are the eighth (qualities).
सौरभक्तिः सदा कार्या भोजकेषु विशेषतः
Devotion to the Sun should always be practiced, especially among those who provide food.
भयदारिद्र्यरोगेभ्यस्तेषां कुर्यात्प्रियाणि वै
One should do kind deeds for them, protecting them from fear, poverty, and disease.
यत्कृतं भोजकानां वै तत्कृतं स्याद्रवेर्नृप
Whatever is done for those who provide food, O king, is as if done for the Sun.
स च प्रयत्नाद्द्रष्टव्यस्तत्र संनिहितो रविः
He should be seen with effort there, for the Sun is present.
आज्ञां कृत्वा यथान्यायमश्वमेधफलं लभेत् 1.171.
By acting according to proper command, one attains the fruit of the horse sacrifice.
स्वागतासनपाद्यार्घ्यमधुपर्काद्यनुक्रमात्
Welcoming, seat, water for the feet, arghya, madhuparka, and so forth in order.
प्रतिश्रयप्रदानेन राजा भवति भारत
By providing shelter, O Bhārata, one becomes a king.
श्वेतबिंदुपरीतांगं ध्यानश्रमविकर्शितम्
With limbs covered in white spots, worn out by meditation and ascetic practice.
क्षुत्पिपासातुरं श्रांतं मलिनं रोगिणं तथा
Hungry, thirsty, exhausted, dirty, and also sick.
पतिताशस्तसंकीर्णचंडालादीनां पक्षिणाम्
Of fallen, mixed, outcastes, and birds.
अत्यल्पमपि कारुण्याद्दत्तं भवति चाक्षयम्
Even a very little given out of compassion becomes inexhaustible.
अभावे तृणभूम्यन्नं पत्रं धनफलानि च
In absence, grass, earth, food, leaves, wealth, and fruits.
