समारोप्य शरेणैव जघानाशु स राक्षसम् 3.2.5.
Placing him on the arrow itself, he swiftly slew that demon.
मिथो विवादवंतस्ते दृष्ट्वा कन्यां स्मरानुगाः
Desiring the maiden, they began to quarrel with each other.
प्रश्रयावनतः प्राह वैतालं रुद्रकिंकरम्
With humility and bowed head, he spoke to the Vetala, Rudra's servant.
विदित्वा योऽवदत्कन्यां पितृतुल्यो द्विजो हि सः
He who, knowing, spoke to the maiden is indeed a Brahmin like a father.
हत्वा यो राक्षसं वीरं कन्यायोग्यो हि सोऽभवत्
He who slew the demon is indeed worthy of the maiden.
ग्रामे धर्मपुरं रम्ये नानाजननिषेविते
In the beautiful village of Dharmapura, served by many people,
तत्राभवन्महीपालो धर्मशीलो महोत्तमः
There was a king there, most excellent and devoted to righteousness.
अंधको नाम तन्मंत्री न्यायशास्त्रविशारदः
His minister was named Andhaka, expert in the science of law.
धर्मशीलेन रचितं तत्र दुर्गा प्रतिष्ठिता
By the righteous king, a temple was built there and Durga was installed.
अर्द्धरात्रे महागौरी नृपं प्राह वृणीष्व भोः स्तुतिं चकार नम्रात्मा येन दुर्गा प्रसीदति
At midnight, Mahagauri said to the king, 'Choose a boon, O king.' He, with a humble heart, praised her, by which Durga is pleased.
सा त्वं भगवती साक्षात्त्वया सर्वमिदं ततम्
You, O Divine Lady, are directly present; by you, all this is pervaded.
महालक्ष्म्या त्वया सार्द्धं बुभुजे निर्मलं सुखम्
Together with Mahalakshmi, you enjoyed pure happiness.
पालयंश्च महालक्ष्म्या त्वया सार्द्धं सनातनि
And, O Eternal One, together with Mahalakshmi, you protect.
महाकाल्या त्वया सार्द्धं भस्म कृत्वा विराजते 3.2.6.१
With Mahakali, you shine forth, having reduced everything to ashes.
त्वल्लीलया च ते जाता जगन्मातर्नमोस्तु ते
By your play, O Mother of the Universe, all these were born; I bow to you.
महाबलो महावीर्यस्तनयस्ते भविष्यति
Your son will be of great strength and great valor.
इति श्रुत्वा स नृपतिः स्वगेहं प्राप्य निर्भयः
Hearing this, the king returned to his own house, free from fear.
ततः प्रभृति राजेन्द्र मूर्तौ जाता स्वयं किल
From that time, O King of Kings, she herself was born in a form.
काशीदासेन सहितो ग्रामं धर्मपुरं गतः
Accompanied by Kashidasa, he went to the village called Dharmapura.
पित्रान्वितां राजमार्गे गच्छंती श्रमपीडिताम्
He saw her, weary and afflicted, going along the royal road with her father.
कामांधश्चंडिकां प्राह जगन्मातः सनातनि
Blinded by desire, he spoke to Chandika, the eternal Mother of the Universe.
जातियोग्या ममैवास्ति रजकस्य सुता शुभा
There is a worthy girl for me, the auspicious daughter of the washerman.
मोहयित्वा च पितरं तस्याः पाणिग्रहः कृतः
Having deluded her father, he performed the marriage ceremony with her.
भुक्त्वा स विविधं भोगं तया सार्द्धं सुखप्रदम् 3.2.6.
He enjoyed various pleasures with her, which brought happiness.
काशिदासस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा स्नेहेन त्वरितोऽगमत्
Hearing this, Kashidasa, out of affection, quickly went.
अर्पयित्वा शिरो देव्यै देवीरूपत्वमागता
Having offered his head to the Goddess, he attained the form of a goddess.
वरं वरयतामद्य यो यः कामो ह्यभीप्सितः
Today, choose a boon, whatever desire is wished for.
कामांगी सा तु तां प्राह स्वपतिं मां समर्पय
The woman filled with desire said to her, 'Give me to my husband.'
मित्रांगं सुन्दरं मह्यं देहि मातर्नमोनमः यथाकामं दत्तवती वरं दारसुरूपिणी
O Mother, I bow to you; grant me a beautiful and pleasing companion, just as you have previously given the boon of a lovely wife according to my desire.
किं कृतं च तया देव्या तेषामर्थे वदस्व मे
Tell me, what did that goddess do for their sake?
