माघमासे तु संप्राप्ते यः कुर्यान्नक्तभोजनम्
When the month of Māgha arrives, whoever observes eating only at night,
सोपवासश्च सप्तम्यां भवेदुभयपक्षयोः गां च दयाद्दिनेशाय तरुणीं नीलसंनिभाम्
and fasts on the seventh day in both lunar fortnights, and out of compassion gives a young cow, dark as a cloud, to the lord of the day,
इन्द्रनीलप्रतीकाशैर्विमानैः शिखिसंयुतैः
with celestial vehicles resembling sapphires, adorned with peacocks,
राजेंद्र फाल्गुने मासि यः कुर्यान्नक्तभोजनम्
O king, in the month of Phālguna, whoever observes eating only at night,
षष्ठ्यां वाप्यथ सप्तम्यामुपवासपरो नरः
or on the sixth or seventh day, the man who is devoted to fasting,
वल्मीकजादिमृद्भिश्च गोमूत्रशकृदादिभिः 1.165.
using earth from anthills and similar places, as well as cow urine and dung,
सौरभेयीं ततो दद्याद्रक्ताभां रक्तमालिने गत्वादित्यपुरं रम्यं मोदते शाश्वतीः समाः
then should give a cow of the Saurabhi breed, red-hued and garlanded in red; reaching the delightful city of the Sun, he enjoys eternal happiness,
मासि चैत्रे तु संप्राप्ते यः कुर्यान्नक्तभोजनम् भानवे पाटलां दद्याद्वैष्णवीं तरुणीं नृप
When the month of Caitra arrives, whoever observes eating only at night, O king, should give to the Sun a young cow, rosy-colored and Vaishnavi,
पुष्पराग प्रभैर्यानैर्नानाहंसादियायिभिः
with vehicles shining like topaz, drawn by various swans and other birds,
वैशाखे वीरमासे तु यः कुर्यान्नक्तभोजनम्
In the month of Vaiśākha, the heroic month, whoever observes eating only at night,
गां च दद्यान्महाराज भास्कराय शुभानन
And he should give a cow, O great king, to Bhaskara, the auspicious-faced one.
शुद्धस्फटिकसंकाशैर्यानैर्बर्हिणवाहनैः
With vehicles shining like pure crystal, drawn by peacocks as mounts.
संप्राप्ते श्रावणे मासि यः कुर्यान्नक्तभोजनम्
Whoever, when the month of Shravana arrives, observes the vow of eating only at night—
पीतवर्णां च गां दद्याद्भास्कराय महात्मने
He should give a yellow-colored cow to Bhaskara, the great-souled one.
स विचित्रैर्महायानैर्हंससारसगामिभिः
With splendid vehicles drawn by swans and cranes.
वीर भाद्रपदे मासि यः कुर्यान्नक्तभोजनम् 1.165.
O hero, whoever in the month of Bhadrapada observes the vow of eating only at night—
स्वप्यादायतने रात्रौ सर्वभूतानुकम्पकः
He should sleep at the temple at night, showing compassion to all beings.
निशाकरकरप्रख्यैर्वज्रवैदूर्यसन्निभैः
With vehicles shining like the rays of the moon, resembling diamond and beryl.
गत्वादित्यपुरं रम्यं सुरासुरसुवन्दितम्
He goes to the delightful city of the Sun, praised by gods and asuras alike.
श्रीमानाश्वयुजे मासि यः कुर्यान्नक्तभोजनम्
The fortunate one who, in the month of Ashvayuja, observes the vow of eating only at night—
दद्याद्गां पद्मवर्णाभां ,भानवेऽमिततेजसे
He should give a cow with the radiance of a lotus to Bhanu, of immeasurable splendor.
स्वस्तिमौक्तिकसंकाशैरिंद्रनीलोपशोभितैः गच्छेद्भानुसलोकत्वं भुञ्जानः स जितेन्द्रियः
With vehicles shining like auspicious pearls, adorned with sapphires, he attains the world of the Sun, enjoying there, having mastered his senses.
दिवाकराय गां दद्याज्वलनार्कसमप्रभाम्
He should give to Divakara a cow shining like blazing fire and the sun.
कालानलशिखप्रख्यैर्महायानैर्नगोपमैः
With great vehicles resembling the flames of time's fire, and like the best of bulls.
मार्गशीर्षे शुभे मासि यः कुर्यान्नक्तभोजनम्
In the auspicious month of Margashirsha, whoever observes the vow of eating only at night—
प्रयच्छेद्गां तथा रक्तां नानालंकारभूषिताम् 1.165.
He should give a red cow, adorned with various ornaments.
सितपद्मनिभैर्यानैः श्वेताश्वरथसंयुतैः
With vehicles like white lotuses, yoked to chariots with white horses.
अहिंसासत्यवचनमस्तेयं क्षांतिरार्जवम्
Nonviolence, truthfulness, non-stealing, forgiveness, and sincerity—
पक्षयोरुभयोर्मार्गे सप्तम्यां कुरुनंदन
On the seventh day, O descendant of Kuru, on both lunar fortnights and both paths.
सप्तम्योभयविख्यातं सर्वपापभयापहम्
The seventh day, renowned in both ways, removes all sin and fear.
