हरिदासं स पप्रच्छ कलेरागमनं कदा 3.2.5.
He asked Haridasa, 'When will the age of Kali begin?'
यदा राज्यं कृतं तेन कलेरागममनं तदा
When he established his kingdom, then the age of Kali began.
द्वितीयास्याच्च विविधा भाषा लोक विमोहिनी
And from his second wife arose various languages that delude the people.
यदा धर्मं च वेदोक्तं विपरीतं हि दृश्यते
When the dharma spoken of in the Vedas is seen to be reversed,
कलिनाऽधर्ममित्रेण सर्वे देवा निराकृताः
By Kali, the friend of unrighteousness, all the gods are cast aside.
दुर्गतिस्तस्य चार्धांगी गेहेगेहे तदा भवेत्
Then poverty, as his consort, will be present in every household.
लोभवश्यास्तु धनिनो महत्त्वं शूद्रका गताः
The wealthy will be ruled by greed, and the lowly will attain greatness.
निष्फला तु मही जाता कलौ प्राप्ते हि दृश्यते
The earth becomes barren and fruitless when Kali arrives, as is seen.
इति श्रुत्वा हरिश्चंद्रो दत्त्वा तस्मै सुदक्षिणाम्
Hearing this, Hariśchandra gave him a generous gift.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र ब्राह्मणो बुद्धिकोविदः
Meanwhile, there arrived a brahmin skilled in wisdom.
विमानं शीघ्रगं नाम देव्या दत्तं महोत्तमम् 3.2.5.
A most excellent flying chariot, swift as thought, was given by the goddess.
तस्मिन्ददर्श कन्यार्थे तदा विप्रो विमोहितः
There, for the sake of the maiden, the brahmin was then bewildered.
हरिदासस्य तनयो मुकुंदो नाम कोविदः
Haridasa's son, named Mukunda, was learned.
गुरुराह च शिष्यं तं शृणु वाचं मुकुंद मे
And the teacher said to that student, 'Listen to my words, Mukunda.'
तथेत्युक्त्वा मुकुंदस्तु स्वगेहं शीघ्रमाययौ
Mukunda, having replied 'So be it,' quickly went to his own home.
वामनं वरयामास तं विप्रं शब्दवेधिनम्
He chose Vamana, that Brahmin skilled in the Vedas, as his husband.
त्रयस्ते ब्राह्मणाः प्राप्ताः सुतार्थे गुणकोविदाः
Three Brahmins, skilled in virtues, arrived seeking a bride.
महादेवीं जहाराशु प्राप्तो विंध्याचले गिरौ
He swiftly abducted the great goddess and reached the Vindhya mountain.
धीमान्नाम द्विजो विद्वांस्तान्प्राह गणकोत्तमः
A wise Brahmin named Dhiman, the foremost astrologer, spoke to them.
स्वविमाने समारोप्य तौ द्विजौ बुद्धिकोविदः
The wise one placed those two Brahmins in his own flying chariot.
समारोप्य शरेणैव जघानाशु स राक्षसम् 3.2.5.
Placing him on the arrow itself, he swiftly slew that demon.
मिथो विवादवंतस्ते दृष्ट्वा कन्यां स्मरानुगाः
Desiring the maiden, they began to quarrel with each other.
प्रश्रयावनतः प्राह वैतालं रुद्रकिंकरम्
With humility and bowed head, he spoke to the Vetala, Rudra's servant.
विदित्वा योऽवदत्कन्यां पितृतुल्यो द्विजो हि सः
He who, knowing, spoke to the maiden is indeed a Brahmin like a father.
हत्वा यो राक्षसं वीरं कन्यायोग्यो हि सोऽभवत्
He who slew the demon is indeed worthy of the maiden.
ग्रामे धर्मपुरं रम्ये नानाजननिषेविते
In the beautiful village of Dharmapura, served by many people,
तत्राभवन्महीपालो धर्मशीलो महोत्तमः
There was a king there, most excellent and devoted to righteousness.
अंधको नाम तन्मंत्री न्यायशास्त्रविशारदः
His minister was named Andhaka, expert in the science of law.
धर्मशीलेन रचितं तत्र दुर्गा प्रतिष्ठिता
By the righteous king, a temple was built there and Durga was installed.
अर्द्धरात्रे महागौरी नृपं प्राह वृणीष्व भोः स्तुतिं चकार नम्रात्मा येन दुर्गा प्रसीदति
At midnight, Mahagauri said to the king, 'Choose a boon, O king.' He, with a humble heart, praised her, by which Durga is pleased.
