योष्टांगगर्भमापूर्य भानोर्मूर्ध्नि निवेदयेत्
Filling a vessel with the eightfold ingredients, one should offer it upon the head of the Sun.
आपः क्षीरं कुशाग्राणि घृतं दधि तथा मधु
Water, milk, blades of kuśa grass, ghee, curd, and also honey—
अष्टांग एष अर्घो वै ब्रह्मणा परिकीर्तितः
This eightfold arghya is declared by Brahmā.
दातुर्वैणवपात्रेण दत्तेऽर्घ्ये यत्फलं भवेत्
The fruit that arises from offering arghya with a copper vessel—
ताम्रार्घ्यपात्रदानेन पुण्यं शतगुणं मतम् 1.163.
By giving an arghya vessel of copper, the merit is considered to be a hundredfold.
रौप्यपात्रेण विज्ञेयं लक्षार्घ्यं नात्र संशयः
By means of a silver vessel, the arghya is known as worth a hundred thousand; of this there is no doubt.
एवं स्नानार्घ्यनैवेद्यबलिधूपादिषु क्रमात्
In this way, for bathing, arghya, offering, bali, incense, and so forth, in due order—
रौप्यपात्रप्रदानेन यत्पुण्यं वेदपारगे
The merit from giving a silver vessel to one versed in the Vedas—
फलं कोटिसुवर्णस्य यो दद्याद्वेदपारगे
The fruit of a crore of gold is for one who gives to a knower of the Vedas.
सुवर्णपात्रं यो दद्याद्भास्कराय महीपते
Whoever gives a golden vessel to the Sun, O king—
तुल्यमेव फलं प्रोक्तं सर्वमाढ्यदरिद्रयोः
The same fruit is declared for both the wealthy and the poor.
विभवे सति यो मोहान्न कुर्याद्विधिविस्तरम्
If, though possessing wealth, one out of delusion does not perform the full rite—
तस्मान्मन्त्रैः फलैस्तोयैश्चन्दनाद्यैश्च यत्नतः
Therefore, with mantras, fruits, waters, sandal and the like, one should carefully perform [the rite].
वर्षकोटिशतं दिव्यं सूर्यलोके महीयते
For a hundred million years, one is honored in the world of the Sun.
गंधाच्चतुर्गुणं ज्ञेयं पुष्पमष्टगुणं नृप तस्माच्छतगुणं पुण्यं कुंकुमस्य विधीयते ।। 1.163.
The fragrance is known to yield four times the merit, flowers eight times, O king; therefore, a hundredfold merit is prescribed for saffron.
भानुं पर्याप्तमालिप्य कल्पकोटिं वसेद्दिवि
Having fully anointed the Sun, one dwells in heaven for a kalpa of crores.
स दीव्येत्सुरवृन्देन पुण्यगंधैः प्रलेपितः
He sports among the hosts of gods, anointed with auspicious fragrances.
भक्त्या निवेद्य अर्काय तालवृंतं नराधिप
Having devotedly offered a tālavṛnta fan to the Sun, O lord of men—
मायूरं व्यजनं दत्त्वा सूर्यायातीव शोभनम्
By offering a peacock-feather fan, exceedingly beautiful, to the Sun,
पुष्पैररण्यसंभूतैः पत्रैर्वा गिरिसम्भवैः
With flowers grown in the forest, or with leaves originating from the mountains,
आत्मारामभवैश्चैव पुष्पैः संपूजयेद्रविम्
And also with flowers that arise naturally, one should worship the Sun.
तपःशीलगुणोपेत इति हासविदि द्विजे
Endowed with austerity, good conduct, and virtue—thus is the rule, O twice-born.
करवीरस्य कुसुममर्काय विनिवेदयेत् एवं पुष्पविशेषेण फलं तदधिकं भवेत्
One should offer the flower of the oleander to the Sun; by such special flowers, the result becomes greater.
सदा पुष्पसहस्रेभ्यः करवीरं विशिष्यते
Among thousands of flowers, the oleander is always superior.
पद्मपुष्पसहस्रेभ्यो बकपुष्पं विशिष्यते 1.163.
Among thousands of lotus flowers, the bakula flower is superior.
कुशपुष्पसहस्रेभ्यः शमीपत्रं विशिष्यते सर्वासां पुष्पजातीनां प्रवरं नीलमुत्पलम्
Among thousands of kusa flowers, the leaf of the sami tree is superior; among all kinds of flowers, the blue lotus is the best.
रक्तोत्पलसहस्रेण नीलोत्पलशतेन च
A thousand red lotuses are equaled by a hundred blue lotuses.
कल्पकोटिसहस्राणि कल्पकोटिशतानि च
The merit of hundreds of thousands of kalpa trees, and even hundreds of millions of kalpa trees,
शेषाणां पुष्पजातीनां यत्फलं परिकीर्तितम्
Whatever result is declared for the other kinds of flowers,
शमीपुष्पं बृहत्याश्च कुसुमं तुल्यमुच्यते
The flower of the sami tree is said to be equal to the flower of brihati.
