If there were to be gifts meant for the deity, then Brahmins would become 'devalakas'; desire for divine property causes one to abandon Brahminhood. When a gift meant for the deity is given to a Brahmin through the deity's agency, both the giver and the receiver are sinners, each due to their own fault. If a Brahmin accepts a gift meant for the deity and offers it in a śrāddha or a sacrifice, or gives it away, that Brahmin, having deviated from his conduct, becomes sinful and is reborn as a demon. Where a 'devalaka' Brahmin eats in a ritual line, O king, and touches the food, that line becomes impure and incurs sin. If a 'devalaka' Brahmin performs the rites of passage for someone, he causes all his ancestors to fall headlong. Whoever causes his own downfall cannot uplift others; how can he uplift himself?—this is the lowest conception. One who, out of force or fear, establishes his livelihood in the house of the Sun, falls from Brahminhood. If a Brahmin eats with the acceptance of gifts, with the mantra of acceptance, there is no Vedic authority for accepting gifts meant for the deity. Therefore, a king should never give divine property to a Brahmin; I will cut the Brahmasūtra and depart—let me go. Sāmba said: If this is not to be accepted by Brahmins, to whom should I give it? Tell me what you have heard or seen. Gauramukha said: Give this auspicious city to the Magas; they have the right to the food of the gods and to the worship of the deities. Sāmba said: Who are these Magas you mention? Where do they live, O lord? Whose sons are they, O best of Brahmins? What are their practices and appearance? Gauramukha said: The one called Maga is a divine Brahmin, O hero, said to be the son of Nikṣubhā and the Sun. Sāmba said: How is he the son of Nikṣubhā? How is he the son of a hero? How is he called the son of the Sun, O sinless one? Gauramukha said: The goddess Nikṣubhā, O Yādava, took human birth, having received a curse from the Sun, though worshipped by the world. Her lineage is called Mihira, and she was given the highest Brahminhood. Sujihvā, a righteous sage's son, was her father. His daughter was Nikṣubhā, a most beautiful woman, famed as Hāralīlā for her beauty and playfulness. By her father's command, she played in the sacrificial fire. While she was playing properly in the blazing fire, the lord of gods, the radiant Sun, saw her. Seeing her endowed with beauty and youth, the lord of gods was overcome by desire and thought, 'How can I enjoy her?' The fire-god, honored by the gods, was drawn away by her; the Sun thought, 'Entering the forest, I will enjoy this slender maiden, worshipped by the world.' Thus resolved, the lord Sun, the thousand-rayed lord of the day, entered the fire, and then a son was born. Then the beautiful, playful, youthful maiden, with wide eyes, leapt over the blazing fire. Angered, the fire-god, assuming his true form, seized her hand and said, 'O best of the Yadus, you have not been appointed by the Sun, and, abandoning the Vedic rite, you have leapt over me. Therefore, though born from me, he will not be your son; he will be known by the name Jaraśabda, increaser of the lineage.' Those born from Agni are called Magas, those from Soma are Brahmins, and those from the Sun are called divine Bhojakas. Having thus spoken, the blessed Sun withdrew. Then, knowing that a child had been born, the sage, through meditation, realized it. The great sage Ṛgjihva, full of energy, pronounced a curse, saying, 'Because of my own fault and desire for a woman, as the embryo was covered with dirt, so this child, though noble, will be unworthy of worship.' Distressed by grief for her son, the young woman, her eyes full of tears, sorrowfully contemplated the fire-god. Then, to the best of the gods, she said, 'This great curse has been given to my offspring born from your seed; you should make him worthy of worship.' The lord Aryaman, assuming a fiery form, spoke these words: 'Ṛgjihva, of great energy and firm vows, acts righteously; the great curse he pronounced cannot be undone. Yet, what is to be done is weightier; I will make your son, though unworthy of worship, a knower of the Vedas. His lineage will flourish greatly on earth. From my limbs will arise great souls, the Vāśiṣṭhas, knowers of Brahman. The Madgāyanas, Madyajanas, my devotees, devoted to me, my servants, and observers of my vows, those who see the true meaning of the Veda, will always worship you and me properly, absorbed in my being. By devotion to my acts, my limbs, and absorption in my nature, freed from sin by my grace, they will surely attain me. Wearing matted hair and beards, always devoted to me, knowing the fivefold ritual times, sacrificers at the time of Vīra, holding a shield in the right hand and armor in the left, covering the mouth with the gift of the husband, disciplined and pure, having taken a great breath, then eating in silence—if they worship me without proper rites and mantras, with disturbed senses and minds, they too, fallen from heaven, will wander in the presence of the Sun. Such will be your sons on earth, O great-souled one, in the Maga lineage, masters of the Veda and its branches. Thus comforting the goddess, the Sun, remover of darkness, in the middle of the night, she attained joy. Thus were the Bhojakas born, O descendant of Kṛṣṇa, radiant like Viṣṇu and the Sun, worshipped by the world. Give them this city; they are worthy of acceptance, as are you and I in the worship of the Sun. Hearing these words of Gauramukha, Sāmba, son of Jāmbavatī, bowed his head and said: Where do these great-souled sons of the Sun, the Bhojakas, dwell, O best of Brahmins, that I may bring them? Gauramukha said: I do not know, O mighty-armed one, where the Magas dwell; the Sun knows them, so take refuge in him. Thus addressed by the Brahmin, Sāmba bowed his head to the Sun and asked, 'Who will perform your worship?' Thus requested by Sāmba, the image replied: 'In Jambūdvīpa, none are fit for my service; go to Śākadvīpa and bring my worshippers here. Beyond the salt ocean, surrounded by the milk ocean, is Śākadvīpa, so called because it lies beyond Jambūdvīpa. There are holy peoples there, endowed with the four varṇas: Magas, Magagās, Gānagās, and Mandagās. The Magas are mostly Brahmins, the Magagās are known as Kṣatriyas, the Gānagās are Vaiśyas, and the Mandagās are their Śūdras. There is no intermixture among them for the sake of dharma. Their dharma is considered in this way; the people are happy. Their radiance was fashioned by Viśvakarman. To them I revealed the four Vedas, with their secrets, and various hymns and mysteries. They meditate on me and worship me always; my people, my devotees, devoted to me, my servants, and observers of my vows, always perform my worship with auspicious rites. Thus, the gods, Gandharvas, Siddhas, and Cāraṇas sport and delight with them, appearing visibly. In Jambūdvīpa, I am Viṣṇu, worshipped with the Veda and its branches; I am Indra in Śālmalīdvīpa, Bhaga in Krauñcadvīpa.

In Plakṣadvīpa, I am Bhānu; in Śākadvīpa, I am Divākara; in Puṣkara, I am known as Brahmā; and then I am Maheśvara. Bring those Magas here from Śākadvīpa for my worship. Mount Garuḍa, Sāmba, and go quickly without hesitation. Accepting this command of the Sun, Sāmba, son of Jāmbavatī, returned to Dvāravatī, shining with great splendor. He told his father everything about his vision of the deity. Then, obtaining Garuḍa, Sāmba mounted him and departed. Arriving at Śākadvīpa, his body thrilled with joy, Sāmba saw there, as described, the radiant Magas. They were worshipping the Sun with auspicious incense, lamps, and other offerings. He first greeted them, circumambulated them, inquired about their well-being, and praised them with unprecedented words: 'You are indeed virtuous, seeking auspiciousness through the vision of the Sun, devoted to his worship, from whom boons are granted. Know me as Sāmba, son of Viṣṇu, renowned by name. On the bank of the Candrabhāgā, I have established the Sun. By his command, I have come here; arise, let us go.' They then said to Sāmba, 'So it is, without doubt. The deity has already told us; eighteen clans of Magas, knowers of the Veda, will go with you as the deity has spoken.' Then those eighteen clans were all mounted on Garuḍa by Sāmba, who swiftly returned. In a short time, he arrived at Mitravana, and having fulfilled the Sun's command, Sāmba reported everything. The Sun, pleased, said to Sāmba, 'These are my worshippers, bringers of peace to the people. They will perform my worship as prescribed, O best of the Yadus; therefore, you need not worry any longer.'

Sumantu said: Thus, having brought the Magas, Sāmba, the great soul, once established the city on the bank of the river Candrabhāgā, installing the Sun and making it prosperous with wealth, and entrusted it to the Bhojakas. That city of the Sun, famous in the three worlds, built by Sāmba, is therefore called Sāmbapura. In the middle of that city, the Sun was established as the deity, and all were properly settled in the city bearing their own names. The Magas maintained good conduct, following the customs of their families, serving the deity with songs and Vedic rites. Having accomplished his purpose, Sāmba, having obtained his boon, again, though still young, bowed to the first god, the eldest Sun. Then, having bowed and greeted all the Magas, Sāmba departed, pure, for the city of Dvāravatī. For the sake of the Magas, the Bhojakas, born of the Bhoja lineage, were requested by the grandson of Vasudeva, the great-souled one of their own lineage. The Bhojakas gave their daughters in marriage to the Magas; all those maidens, adorned with coral and jewels, were worshipped and sent to the house of the Sun. Then, having returned, Sāmba asked the Sun: 'Tell me the knowledge of the Magas and the Veda without defect.' Hearing Sāmba's words, the Sun replied: 'Go to Nārada; he will tell you everything.' Thus instructed, Sāmba went to Nārada and reported everything. Nārada said to Sāmba, 'I do not know the highest knowledge of the Bhojakas, O best of the Yadus; the great sage Vyāsa knows their knowledge. Go to him and ask, bowing your head; at Kṛṣṇa's request, he will tell you everything, without doubt.' Thus instructed by Nārada, Sāmba, son of Jāmbavatī, went to Vyāsa's hermitage, bowed his head, joined his palms, and spoke these words: 'I went to Śākadvīpa and brought the best of the Magas, young and mature, all assembled. Having honored and worshipped them, I entrusted them with the city. Having received the city, they, eldest, middle, and youngest, the Bhojakas born of the Bhoja lineage, adorned maidens, chose husbands, and their auspicious marriage was performed. Ah, how fortunate, praiseworthy, and meritorious they are, always devoted to the worship of the Sun, from whom boons are granted. For them, all rewards, here and hereafter, are sufficient. Though human life is transient, those devoted to divine worship are truly blessed. Yet, as I reflect on the Sun and the Bhojakas, I have a doubt in my heart regarding their knowledge. How are they worshippers? Who are the Magas and who are the Bhojakas? What is their supreme knowledge? Who is to be known among them? Why are they called divine? Why do they wear the kūrca? What is the Sauravrata, and why are they called reciters? Why do they sing the Veda with brilliance? What is the authority for the garment called ahikañcuka, and to whom does it belong? What is its name, and how did it arise? How do they sing to the gods and perform sacrifice? What is their agnihotra, and what are the five swings? Tell me all these practices of the Bhojakas.' Hearing Sāmba's words, the sage Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana, son of Kālī, of great energy, spoke these supreme words: 'Well asked, O best of the Yadus, well asked, O virtuous one. The practices of the Bhojakas are difficult to know, without doubt. By the grace of the Sun, memory has come to me; as told by Vasiṣṭha, so I will tell you everything. Hear the noble conduct of the Magas, O delight of Kṛṣṇa. They are knowers of knowledge, established in karma-yoga. All the sages are said to observe silence and discipline; they also eat in silence, all the great sages. The inhabitants of Śākadvīpa also follow the conduct of sages; therefore, one should eat in silence, desiring freedom from qualities. The words spoken by the Sun, the reason for the boon, and their worship are thus. They are always remembered as worshippers, and because they are born of Bhojaka maidens, they are called Bhojakas. Just as there are four Vedas for Brahmins, so also for the Magas, O virtuous one. Ṛgveda, Yajurveda, Sāmaveda, and Atharvaṇa—these are the Vedas spoken by Brahmā, and so also for the Magas. But their Vedas are different: Veda, Viśvamadas, Vidvadvahniras—these are their Vedas, as declared by Prajāpati. The Magas study the Veda and its branches, and are therefore called knowers of the Veda. The rest is not so important, but brings happiness to all beings. He who attains the Sun's chariot with the charioteers, he causes rain. Whoever seeks liberation from him, the Sun is the great shelter; he should always be worshipped by the Magas with weapons and mantras. Just as garlands are measured among Brahmins at the time of worship, and darbha grass at all rites and sacrifices, so are these pure for them; thus is the dharma of the Magas. By these, the Maga lords flourish in that land, learned, noble, pure in conduct, devoted to sacrifice and worship, reciting the mantra from the beginning. The Bhojakas, O best of the Yadus, are dear, and the mantra is recited like a weapon for the Veda. For all Brahmins, Sāvitrī is prescribed; for us, O best of the Yadus, it is the great Vyāhṛti. With the mantra of Amohaka, they eat in silence, as is proper; they do not touch anything impure, nor should they touch it. They breathe without desire, and, having surrounded the desired Sun, always bow to him, just as sacrifice is performed with mantra and Vedic rite. This is the truth for the Magas; their offering is accomplished with prescribed rites and mantras, and therefore they are called sacrificers. Just as agnihotra is prescribed for Brahmins, so adhvahotra is prescribed for the Magas. 'Acchaṃ ca nāmeti' is the name of that sacrifice, as said by the sage; there is no doubt in this. Five incenses are always to be offered; this is the means of success here. At the time of the officer's staff, twice, and at the three sandhyās, worship of the Sun is to be performed.

Description of the Bhojaka caste Samba said: That which you have spoken about the Bhojakas, that the 'avyanga' (unblemished) is the purifier of the body—this is said to be their vow and bond. But what is their caste considered to be? Vyasa said: All the boys of the Bhojakas whom you have asked about—what did they say? Tell me all that they declared. Samba said: I have described the settlements of the Bhojakas all around. Now tell me the truth: what is their varna, and how is it established here? Then the Blessed Lord, expert in speech, spoke: Those boys of the Bhojakas whom you mentioned, Samba, and who have been heard— Know that these eight are my own Magas, Shudras born from my limbs. Understanding this statement, bowing with your head to the Sun— Ten girls were given, born in the Bhoja family, to ten men. Then, from the Mandakas also, eight girls were given. Remember, Samba, that I settled them in a city. The eight slave-girls and the ten Bhoja girls— These are to be known as the ten and eight sons of those boys. Among the Bhoja girls, sons were begotten by twice-born men. Those groups are called Bhojakas, and the Brahmanas call them 'divine.' Those born from the slave-girls by the Mandakas are called 'Antya' (lowest). They are to be known as 'Madangas,' attendants of Savita (the Sun). In that city of the Brahmanas, they live with wives and sons, blessed. Engaged in their own duties, they began to worship the Sun in Shaka-dvipa, with various Vedic mantras by the best of sages. Men bearing the 'avyanga' worship the Lord of Day. Seeing one without the 'avyanga' among them, they are filled with curiosity. Samba, having bowed, again asked the son of Satyavati: How is this 'avyanga' described as unblemished, O best of sages? From where did it arise, and why is it considered pure? When is it to be bound, and for what purpose is it worn? What is the authority, O Lord, and what is meant by 'vyanga'? Sumantu said: Having heard these words of Vyasa and the son of Jambavati, He, the son of Kali, spoke to Samba, O tiger among the Kurus. Vyasa said: This, as I have told you, is their caste—there is no doubt. I will now tell you the characteristics of the 'avyanga.' Listen as I speak.

Description of the origin and name of the Vyanga Vyasa said: Deities, sages, Nagas, Gandharvas, and hosts of Apsaras, Yakshas, and Rakshasas dwell in the Sun in due order. There, Vasuki, in the course of a year, swiftly approached the rising chariot of the Sun, bowing to the Lord of Day, and returned to his own place. He offered to the Sun an 'avyanga' for the sake of pleasing him—a divine ornament adorned with Ganges gems, not too red nor too white, auspicious. He bound it, for the sake of pleasure, at the middle of his own body. Born from the body of the Naga king, it was held by the Sun. Therefore, it is worn by those desiring devotion to the Sun, and by proper observance, the Bhojaka becomes pure. By wearing it always, the Sun is pleased. Those Bhojakas who worship the Sun but do not wear it, Are not fit for Saurite rites; they are considered impure, without doubt. By neglecting the prescribed conduct, they are broken and unworthy to worship the Sun. Those who worship the Sun in this way go to the hell called Raurava. They should not laugh or rise until the worship is completed. Thus, knowing this, there is no doubt that without the 'avyanga,' the Sun is not touched. Because it is touched by the Naga king, it is called 'arasus.' It should be of one color and effective in accomplishing duties. Its proper measure is one hundred and one fingers. The best is of that measure; the medium is one hundred and twenty fingers; the short is one hundred and eight fingers, but it should not be shorter than that. This form was made and fashioned by Vishvakarman. Among the Bhojakas, the medium is considered to be one hundred. Even if purified, without it, one does not become pure. By wearing it, O hero, one becomes pure. All sacrificial acts, such as offerings and oblations, become auspicious for him. The 'avyanga' is the unblemished limb, O king. This is the essence, and it is delightful, known by the name 'Jaya.' The 'avyanga' is said to have arisen from the limb of Ahi (the serpent). Therefore, because it is from the limb of Ahi, it is called 'avyanga.' The suffix 'ṇvul' is used in the sense of fitness for worship. Because it is worshipped and pure, it is called 'arhaka.' The essential form is called 'sara,' the principal essence. In the root 'ṣaṇa' in the sense of devotion, it is called 'sārasana.' Because it is worshipped with gold, jewels, and pearls, it is to be known as the 'patitanga,' always offered in daily sacrifices. Thus, O hero, the 'avyanga' and 'vyanga' Bhojakas have been described. It always brings prosperity and growth, and purifies the body. This is composed of all the Vedas and all the gods. It is composed of all beings, Samba, and of all worlds. In its middle is Brahma, at its base is Vishnu, O wise one. At the end is the one with the crescent moon, O descendant of Yadu. The Rigveda is at its base, the Yajurveda in the middle. At the front is the Samaveda, O sinless one, with Angiras as the knot. The earth is at its base, O best of the Yadus. Water is at the root, O Samba; in the middle is the god Agni. Next are air and then ether at the front. At the base is the world of Bhur, in the middle Bhuvarloka, and at the front, Swarloka, as far as the 'vyanga' extends. Thus, O Samba, it is composed of gods and worlds. It is to be worn with great devotion by the worshipper for the pleasure of the Sun. Those who worship the Sun without this, O best of the Yadus, do not obtain the fruit of worship and go to hell. Thus, the Bhojaka should always be 'avyanga.' At other times, O best of the Yadus, this has been told to you. The reason for binding, O hero, is for the sake of ornaments, O virtuous one.

Description of various rites such as incense Sumantu said: Having thus heard from Vyasa, the son of Satyavati, about the origin of the 'avyanga,' Samba, the wise one, again approached the hermitage. Having gone there, the mighty Samba went to the great-armed Narada and spoke these words: How should incense be offered by the Bhojakas to Savitar, O sage? What is the procedure for bathing, sipping water, and offering arghya to the great soul? Hearing Samba's words, the best of sages, Narada, said to Samba, son of Jambavati, O tiger among the Kurus: Now I shall tell you the procedure for offering incense to Ravi. Also, the procedures for bathing, sipping water, and giving gold. After sipping water three times and bathing, wearing clean and pure garments, One should not wear wet clothes, but put on pure ones. Facing north or east, one should sip water with care. One should not sip water while standing in water, but after coming out of the water, with care. In water are the Sun, Fire, Mother, and the goddess Sarasvati. Therefore, after coming out, one should sip water, not while in the water. Sitting in a clean place, with attention, facing east or north, One should wash the feet and hands, and sip water up to the knee. Calmly, one should sip water three times, with attention and concentration. One should wipe oneself twice and sprinkle water three times. Touching the head and the senses in order, Having sipped water, one should bow to the Sun and attain purity in pure places. He who performs rites without sipping water is an unbeliever; all his acts here are fruitless, without doubt. The gods, desiring purity, are declared in the Vedas to be such. All the gods are worshipped with care by those who observe purity; purity alone is praised, for rites are accomplished by purity. Having sipped water, maintaining silence, one should then go to the temple of the gods. For the sake of restraining breath, one should cover the mouth with cloth. One should carefully cover the head to prevent water from the hair falling. Then one should worship Ravi with various auspicious flowers. The sacrificer, with attention, should recite the Gayatri with the head covered. Then one should offer incense to Agni, first a guggul offering. Taking a handful of flowers, with care, one should place it on the crest of the image of Ravi, reciting the divine mantra: 'Om. By the vow which the vow-keepers observe, gods, men, and all ancestors, we honor that Aditya, the first to shine with his radiance.' There are five times for incense, and five rites beginning with oblation. I shall again describe them. The time of the officer with the staff is at dawn, at the sight of the stars. The time of command is at dusk, for those who know the truth. The worship of Ravi should be done three times a day, at sunrise, noon, and sunset. At sunrise, the first half is morning, then the second half is the great Sun. At sunrise, it is called 'Helaya'; at noon, for the fire; likewise, in the mandala, it is given; at afternoon, for the fire. With water mixed with sandalwood, and water with fragrance, lotuses, oleanders, and red lotuses, Flowers mixed with water, Kurunta flowers, and divine fragrances should be placed in a copper vessel. Having offered incense to Agni, O hero, with care, a guggul offering, then taking the arghya vessel, one should invite Ravi: 'Come, O Sun, thousand-rayed, source of light, Lord of the world; have compassion on me, O god, accept this arghya, O Lord of Day.' Having thus invited him, kneeling on the ground, one should offer arghya to Ravi, reciting the Aditya-hridaya: 'Om. Salutation to the Blessed Aditya, the all-pervading, the sky-dwelling, the creator of the worlds, the ruler, the ancient one, thousand-eyed, I bow to you.' 'To Soma, to Rig, Yajur, and Atharva; Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah Om Mahah Om Janah Om Tapah Om Satyam to Brahman, to the head, in the middle, in front.' Narada said: In the supreme Tantra of Savitri, which protects the three worlds, having circumambulated, one should raise the incense vessel. Then, offering the incense, one should recite this speech: 'You alone are the ancient one among Rudras and Vasus; praised by the gods with words, eternal in heaven. In the morning by you, and at noon by another.' 'Om. Salutation to the Blessed One, the embodiment of knowledge; the wise always see you as the supreme abode of Vishnu.' At sunset, one should offer arghya to the Sun with the mantra: 'Om. Salutation to Varuna, to Shambhu.' 'Om. Moving in the black dust, establishing immortality and mortality, the golden Savitar travels with his chariot, seeing the worlds.' By this procedure, having offered incense to the Sun, the Bhojaka should enter the inner sanctum with incense uplifted. Then, having entered, one should offer incense to the image, with the mantra: 'To Mihira, to Niksubha, always.' Then, 'Salutation to the King, to Niksubha, to the officer with the staff, to Pingala.' Likewise, 'To the King, to Srausha, to Ishana, to Garutmata.' Then, circumambulating, one should offer to the deities of the directions. Then, to Dindin, to Hemanta, O best of the Yadus; to Maheshvara, and to Vyoma, O Yadava. (Salutation to all the gods; to the Rudras.) 'Om. To Brahman, to the Lord of the Head, to Aditya, to the Lord of beings, to Surya, salutation.' 'Om. Salutation to the many-hued, to Shesha, to Vasuki, Takshaka, Karkotaka, Padma, Shankha, Kulika, and the Naga kings.' To those dwelling in Tala, Sutala, Patala, Atala, Vitala, Rasatala, and so on, to Daityas, Danavas, and Piśācas, salutation. Then, circumambulating, salutation to the Mothers (Om, salutation to the planets). 'Om. Salutation to the officer with the staff; Om, to Martanda; Om, to Vinayaka.' Thus, having recited the names, having offered incense, O beautiful-faced one, the incense that was raised should be placed back in its place. Praised by the Sun's attendants, thus you are to know, O Lord of Fire, that you have been worshipped by me with devotion as best I could. Grant me, O Lord, success in worldly and spiritual endeavors. He who, having bathed three times a day, worships the Sun with devotion according to the prescribed method, obtains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice. He who does this daily, as described, with the full procedure of incense, will have sons, be free from disease, and, dying, will merge into the Sun. By performing these acts with care as prescribed, all undertakings succeed and bear fruit. If the best flowers are not available, one should offer leaves; if there are no leaves, then incense; if there is no incense, then water. If nothing is available, one should worship by prostration; if unable even to prostrate, one should worship the Sun with the mind. This is the rule when materials are not available; when they are, everything should be offered. He who, with mantras and rites, offers incense to Mitra, by recitation of those, the Sun is pleased with the incense. One should carefully cover the head, nose, and mouth, and worship Bhaskara, O hero, not carelessly. By a lotus, O king, a man attains the Sun; therefore, one should always act properly, and the Sun is to be worshipped. Those who do so attain the fruit of an Ashvamedha and go to the world of the Sun. Those who worship with incense, O Yadava, see the Sun. They attain the supreme state, which even the wise do not see. Those who worship the Sun with devotion attain all desires here and reach the highest abode.

Description of the origin of the Bhojaka Sumantu said: Then the blessed Vyasa came to the city of Dvaravati to see Narayana, the god bearing the conch, discus, and mace. Seeing the sage arrive, Vasudeva, O lord of men, rose up, full of great energy, and worshipped him, O Bharata. He himself offered a seat, water for washing the feet, and arghya, and then, having become attentive, questioned Vyasa, son of Satyavati: These Bhojaka Brahmanas who were brought here by my son, having gone to Shaka-dvipa, are wise and seekers of liberation. Seeing them in form, O Brahmana, and by their entrance and actions, great curiosity and supreme joy have arisen in me. How do they remain even for a moment on earth, those for whom the Sun is always worshipped and for whom liberation always abides? Without becoming a Bhojaka, no one attains liberation. This always appears in my mind, O Brahman. Vyasa said: Just as you have said, O bearer of the conch, discus, and mace, so it is. These Bhojakas are blessed great souls, there is no doubt. Those who always worship Bhanu, the Sun, are wise, devoted to action, and always attain the path of liberation. They always worship Bhanu with offerings of flowers, fruits, food, herbs, and complete oblations of clarified butter. Having performed the eternal sacrifice, they resort to the supreme sacrifice. By performing the supreme sacrifice, their souls are purified and free from sin. They enter the supreme, divine, solar, radiant ray. In the accomplishment of action, there is one established in fire. The second, situated in the path of wind, shines within the sky. The third, beyond that, is said to be in the solar orb. That orb of Savitar is divine, undecaying, and imperishable. In its center is the person who is the essence of being and non-being. He is to be known as perishable and imperishable, the great Sun. He is both with and without attributes; two forms are conceived for him. The imperishable is without attributes; the one with attributes is established in all beings. The essential reality is said to be with attributes; the one without is called without attributes. He enters grass, shrubs, creepers, trees, tigers, birds, and lords of birds, gods, siddhas, men, and creatures of land and water. He is established everywhere, in the inner self of all. When he assumes the form of the kalpa, he takes a second body. The one without attributes is always to be known as established in the radiant ray. He always brings cold, heat, and rain to the three worlds. The second body of his is the imperishable, the supreme state. The path of the gods is established through karma-yoga. Those who know the doctrine of the Sun and the Sankhya-yoga, as taught in the Aditya-siddhanta, attain that state; that is called liberation. There, having gone, one is free from duality and does not grieve. In the Vedas, Brahman is declared, and those who know the truth meditate on it. They meditate on the syllable 'A' as the truth, O best of men; and on the threefold Omkara, with the three measures. They speak of the half-measure as the syllable 'Ma,' which is consonantal. Those who meditate on the knowledge of 'Ma' are truly of the essence of being. The syllable 'Ma' is the blessed god Bhaskara, so it is declared. By meditation on 'Ma,' they are called Magas. With incense and garlands, and other offerings, they worship the thousand-rayed one; therefore, they are known as Bhojakas.

Description of the Knowledge of the Bhojakas Vāsudeva said: O best of Brāhmaṇas, O great sage, tell me the truth about the realization of knowledge among the Bhojakas. O foremost of twice-born, I have the highest curiosity about this. Vyāsa said: Listen as I describe this realization of knowledge. The body is made of bones, covered with sinews, smeared with flesh and blood, Bound with skin, filled with foul odors from urine and feces, Afflicted by old age and sorrow, a dwelling place of diseases and suffering, subject to passion and impermanence—this abode of the elements should be abandoned. A skull, roots of trees, worn-out garments, and helplessness; equanimity towards all beings—these are the marks of one who is liberated. As oil is in sesame, milk in the cow, and fire in wood, so should the wise, collected mind contemplate the means for this. With effort, restraining the restless mind, and controlling the senses and intellect as birds in a cage, The embodied one, with restrained senses, is ever satisfied, O Janārdana of great wisdom, as if with the nectar of immortality. By prāṇāyāma one burns away faults, by dhāraṇā sins, by pratyāhāra contacts, and by meditation the qualities that are not divine. For one who meditates, faults are burned away at the end, just as by fire; so too, faults arising from the senses are burned away by restraint of the breath. One should purify the mind with the mind, purify feelings with feelings, purify the mind with the mind, and purify the intellect with the intellect. When the mind is perfectly clear, actions—good and bad—shine forth; freed from both good and bad, beyond duality, without possessions, Without possessiveness and ego, then one attains the supreme state. In the afternoon, the first form is red, said to be of Ṛg; the second, white, is of Yajur and belongs to midday. The third, black, is of the evening, and is said to be of Sāman; the first is rājasic, O Deva, the second is sāttvic, The third is tāmasic in form; thus its threefold nature is conceived. Apart from these three, the fourth is the solar orb. The fourth, subtle and luminous, is said to be the untainted abode of the gods; the knowers of the Vedas and the solar science call it the fourth. Those who are free from sin through meditation, joined with the syllable Oṃ, seated in the lotus posture, heroes with hands placed on the navel, Purifying the five vital airs that move within the body by the path of the suṣumnā channel, with kumbhaka, recaka, and pūraka, Raising the sweat-moistened big toe upwards in order, seeing the deity of fire at the navel, Seeing Soma in the heart, and then the flame of fire at the crown of the head, reaching that supreme orb by the rays of the wind, Then, one established in yoga who goes beyond to the solar orb, having reached that, does not grieve; that is the supreme solar abode. O mighty-armed Keśisūdana, worship of the gods is described. The first place is the heart, the second is established in fire, The third is at the navel, and the fourth is the solar orb. The supreme place is said by the wise to be the abode of the supreme self in the sun; that is to be known as liberation for men, and that is the state that cuts off saṃsāra. This, equal to immortality, is to be known as the highest, beneficial to people, a thousand rays of nectar; those whose delusion is gone, knowing the essence of the sages' conduct, attain liberation. This conduct of the Magas has been proclaimed to you by me, endowed with the best vehicle; knowing this, the knowers of liberation and the accomplished attain that state. This knowledge spoken by me should be given to those men who have faith; it should not be given by one seeking prosperity to atheists or the unintelligent. Sumantu said: Having spoken thus, the blessed Vyāsa imparted the supreme knowledge of the Bhojakas, and went to the abode of Hari, O mighty-armed one. Famed in the three worlds, gratified by Gaṅgā, adorned at Badarī, O hero, is the hermitage of Nara-Nārāyaṇa. Thus ends the one hundred and forty-fifth chapter, called 'Description of the Knowledge of the Bhojakas,' in the Saptamīkalpa of the Brāhma Parvan of the Śrī Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa.

Description of the Bhojakas Śatānīka said: These Bhojakas, who are said to be worshippers of the Lord of gods, should never eat food prepared by Brāhmaṇas or by anyone else. They are dear to Bhāskara and have attained the status of being worshipped; these Brāhmaṇas are said to be divine, born from the water of the Sun. How did the Bhojakas become unfit to be eaten with? Tell me, what actions make them fit or unfit for sharing food? Sumantu said: Long ago, Vāsudeva was asked this question by Kṛtavarman and also by the mighty Sāmba, O King. They went to Sāmbapura, O hero, and to the mountains of Nārada, and all ate in the house of the great-souled Bhojaka. Because of their solar rites, they became renowned among the gods as eaters of divine food; thus, all were worshipped with devotion and many offerings. They came to the holy city of Dvāravatī, O lord, and those two sages, Nārada and Parvata, ascended to heaven. The mighty-hearted Hārdikya spoke to Vāsudeva: 'O Brāhmaṇa, these Bhojakas are worshippers of Bhāskara, How did people, O Janārdana, eat food in their house? Those two sages, Nārada and Parvata, are said to be divine. Are these Bhojakas truly unfit for Brāhmaṇas to eat with, O Janārdana?' Vāsudeva said: They are not to be eaten with, O mighty-armed one; the Bhojakas are always to be honored, just as the Sun, O wise one. By performing the prescribed rites, they become fit to eat with; listen, O best of the Yadus, to what should be done by them. Listen attentively, O mighty-armed one, to what is to be done by those who strive here. He whose wife is of a low caste, or who does not wear the sacred thread, is to be known as unfit to eat with; there is no doubt that such a Bhojaka is unfit. One who worships without bathing, or who omits anointing, or who worships the Sun without proper rites, A servant Bhojaka who eats food of Śūdras, or who engages in agriculture, or who neglects worship of the gods, One who has not performed the birth and other sacraments, or who does not recite the Sāvitrī with the Āruṇeya mantras, If a Brāhmaṇa eats in his house, he is purified only by a difficult penance. One who eats without properly worshipping the ancestors, gods, humans, spirits, and the Sun is a destroyer of dharma. One who omits anointing, or is without a conch, or who keeps hair on his head, is to be known as the lowest of Bhojakas. For a Bhojaka who performs worship of the gods, homa, bathing, libations, giving, and honoring Brāhmaṇas, If he omits anointing, all his acts become fruitless. He is the embodiment of all the gods and all the Vedas; anointing is said to be the highest and purest for the Bhojakas, O best of the Yadus. At the root of the Bhojakas stands Hari, in the middle is the mighty Brahmā, and at the front is the one adorned with the sound of cows. At the root is the Ṛgveda, in the middle are all the Sāmans, the best Yajurveda is established there along with the Atharva. Three fires, O King, and three worlds are established in order; thus, anointing is pure for the Bhojaka. One who is without this is the lowest Bhojaka, unfit to eat with, impure—there is no doubt. Those Bhojakas who give or sell the remains of offerings, naivedya, or saffron to Śūdras, or who steal divine property, Are to be known as the lowest Bhojakas; those who do not worship the Lord of gods or who destroy divine property are not dear to the gods and are the lowest Bhojakas. If a Bhojaka eats naivedya before it is offered, that food brings hell to the eater, not peace. Therefore, one should always offer naivedya to Bhāskara first, O best of the Yadus; this purifies the body. Just as the puroḍāśa offering purifies the body for Brāhmaṇas, so naivedya purifies the body for Bhojakas, O hero. Thus ends the one hundred and forty-sixth chapter, called 'Description of the Bhojakas,' in the Saptamīkalpa of the Brāhma Parvan of the Śrī Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa.

Description of the Bhojaka Brāhmaṇas Vāsudeva said: Here, as the god Bhāskara was questioned by Aruṇa, O mighty-armed one, who are the Bhojakas dear to him? Who are worthy and who are unworthy in your worship? Thus questioned by Aruṇa, the Sun spoke. Yadu said, 'O mighty-armed one, listen here with focused mind.' Bhāskara said: Those Bhojakas who do not harm others' wives or property, who do not revile the gods, are always dear to me. Those Bhojakas who engage in trade, agriculture, or revile the Vedas are to be known as my enemies. Those who take others' wives, plough others' land, serve kings, O best of birds, or eat food of Śūdras, are to be known as fallen and my enemies. Worship or offerings performed by them, O best of birds, I do not accept. Those Bhojakas who are without a conch, who give my remains, naivedya, or saffron to Śūdras or Vaiśyas, are not dear to me. Those who worship Sāvitrī or Mahāśvetā, who do not know my seal or the names of my attendants, Those Bhojakas described here, O hero, are not able to worship me; those who are dear to me, hear of them, O best of birds, with one-pointed mind. Those who worship the gods, Brāhmaṇas, humans, and ancestors are always dear to me and able to worship the Sun. Those whose heads are always shaved, who are anointed, who sound the conch, are considered divine Bhojakas. Those who bathe well three times a day, free from anger, and worship me, O best of birds, are dear to me. Those who fast at night on my day, on the sixth, on the seventh, and at the solstice, Those Brāhmaṇas are divine, worshippers of mine; those who worship Brāhmaṇas, devoted to me, are always dear to me, O elder of Garuḍa. Those who do not have devotion to me or do not worship Brāhmaṇas, who always hate me, are not to be worshipped or honored. Those Bhojakas who perform great sacrifices for the worship of ancestors, gods, and humans, O best of birds, Are always dear to me, O hero, and are the best among Bhojakas; therefore, one should strive to perform the five sacrifices. Those who always eat with single-minded devotion, O son of Kaśyapa, and do not eat at night, are dear to me. Those who, on my day or the sixth, O Keśava, do not eat at night, are wise and dear to me, O Maga, O best of birds. Those Bhojakas who do not give on the day of father or mother each year are dear to me. Thus, those Bhojakas who, in the month of Māgha on the seventh, offer oleander flowers and red sandalwood, Who offer naivedya of sweet cakes to Brāhmaṇas, ghee oblations, guggulu, bathing with milk, Who sound the conch, perform dance and drama, display five-colored flags, and offer a white umbrella, are dear to me. Worship performed with other colors does not please me as much as that performed by a Bhojaka; no other deity's installation should be done by a Bhojaka. Vāsudeva said: Having spoken thus to Aruṇa, the blessed god ascended Mount Meru. Thus, Bhojakas are to be eaten with, never unfit; those who neglect the rites are not to be eaten with. Those Brāhmaṇas on earth who neglect the rites are also unfit to eat with, especially those engaged in improper acts. There is nothing more worthy of worship, auspicious, or purifying among the four varṇas than the best Bhojaka. When the Bhojaka is worshipped, the Sun is worshipped; when Bhojakas eat in one's house, the Sun, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva themselves partake. As the Sun is foremost among all beings, so the Bhojaka is said to be worthy of worship among all beings. As Kurukṣetra is foremost among holy places, and the ocean among rivers, so the Bhojaka is to be known as the most worshipful among the worshipful. Especially among Sauras, the Bhojaka is said to be worthy of worship, just as a husband is to wives and a teacher to disciples, so is the Bhojaka to Sauras, O son of Hṛdika. When a Bhojaka, honored with fragrance and flowers, eats in someone's house, the Sun, ancestors, and gods themselves partake. Thus, Bhojakas are to be worshipped and eaten with, O son of Hṛdika; those Sauras who eat the food of a Bhojaka without doubt, Are all freed from sin and attain the world of the Sun. Where it is stated who is fit to eat with and who is not, what more need be said? Listen to my words: There is no scripture higher than the Veda, no river like Gaṅgā, no merit equal to the Aśvamedha, no happiness like that of a son, No god like the Sun, no path like that of the mother; just as all these are supreme, so is the Bhojaka, as declared by Bhāskara. Thus ends the one hundred and forty-seventh chapter, called 'Description of the Marks of the Bhojakas,' in the Saptamīkalpa of the Brāhma Parvan of the Śrī Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa.

Description of the Wheel of Time Sumantu said: Then Sāmba, of great splendor, seeing the discus in his father's hand, blazing with a garland of flames and endowed with great energy, Asked his father with devotion and faith: 'Father, from where did you obtain this discus, resembling the Sun? For what purpose does the god bear this supreme divine weapon? Tell me all this, for I wish to hear it out of curiosity.' Vāsudeva said: Well asked, well asked, O mighty-armed one! Listen attentively, my son, to the determination of the nature of the discus. By worshipping the Sun with faith for a thousand divine years, I obtained this discus from Bhāskara, who is worshipped by the world. The Sun, mounted on a fivefold serpent, stands manifest; the planets, beginning with the Moon, are established in his navel circle. The twelve Ādityas are placed in the spokes in order; the elements, beginning with earth, are said to be established in the paths. This supreme wheel, composed of time, is pervaded by these elements; I have briefly described it to you, as if giving another discus. Sāmba said: How is the discus, composed of time, called a lotus? Please tell me this, for I wish to know the truth. Vāsudeva said: The lotus, with six petals, is supported by the six seasons; it is presided over by the Puruṣa, and the Sun is established there with his limbs. The three divisions of time in the world are called the three navels; the months are the spokes, O mighty-armed one, and the fortnights are called the rims. The outer rim is said to be the solstices, the southern and northern; the paths in the navel are the conjunctions, called by the names of the Sun and others. The lunar mansions and planets are always established there; this wheel is pervaded by them, both grossly and subtly, in their distinctions. Among the times mentioned here, those not mentioned by me to you, from the beginning of the yuga to the end of the kalpa, are also established here in order. This wheel, composed of time, has been briefly described to you by me; it proceeds forth from the blazing solar orb. I obtained this from the Sun for the destruction of the Asuras, having worshipped the Sun, the teacher of the world, with austerity in a former kalpa. Therefore, I always worship him, surrounded by the planets and elements, with devotion and my own mantras. He who, with devotion, worships the Sun established in the discus, becomes radiant like the Sun and attains the city of flowers. Therefore, I worship that friend, the joy of my lineage, always surrounded by the planets and elements, with devotion and my own mantras. Those who, on the seventh day, draw the discus and worship the Sun with red sandalwood, saffron, and fragrant substances, Or with pastes mixed with red color, with pure red lotuses, fragrant oleander flowers, Or with other fresh, wild flowers not touched by insects, with unbroken, auspicious, fresh leaves, With ripe fruits, herbs, shoots of dūrvā grass, kuśa grass, with various incenses and fragrances, with cloths and ornaments, With foods to eat, drink, suck, and lick, according to ability, with canopies adorned with palāśa leaves, With umbrellas, fans, bells, ornaments, mirrors, with dance, music, and song, with Vedic recitation and auspicious stories, With cries of victory everywhere, when the worship is complete, they obtain all desired objects without obstacles. Their own circle becomes unobstructed and increases, O virtuous one; the hostile circle is destroyed wherever this is worshipped even once. At the solstice or eclipse, whoever draws and recites this, O Sāmba, the planets become always favorable to him. He becomes free from all diseases and suffering, lives long, is righteous, and endowed with all prosperity. Thus, O child, I have described to you the yoga of the discus, which bestows success in all sacrifices to the Sun, and is especially meritorious, righteous, nourishing, and destructive of enemies, being white, red, yellow, and black in its divisions. Thus ends the one hundred and forty-eighth chapter, called 'Description of the Wheel of Time,' in the Saptamīkalpa of the Brāhma Parvan of the Śrī Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa.

Description of the Sun Initiation Samba said: What is the proper measurement for drawing the disc, and what should be the size of the lotus there? How should the divisions of the rim, spokes, and hub be made? Vasudeva said: The disc should be made circular, measuring sixty-four finger-breadths. The rim should be eight finger-breadths, always in proportion. The hub should be as before, and the lotus there should be three times its size. The field of the lotus, its central bulb, and filaments should be marked. With one part of the filament, the remaining petals should be fashioned. The junctions of the petals are to be divided in order, each by a finger's width. The lotus should be made elevated from the hub, without doubt. The rays should be drawn in order, spreading out. The base of the petal should be a finger's breadth, and the tip three times that. The outer ground should be yellow, and the filaments and central bulb as well. The hub area should be white, and doorways should be marked there. Each doorway should be a hand's breadth, resembling a doorway in size. The rest should be red, and the petal junctions closely set. Lines between the hub and rim should be white, each a finger's breadth. Adorn the whole with alternating white and red, making it beautiful all around. Place the cheek and door-lotus at the corners of the doors. Thus, there should be four doors; the eastern is called the Indra door. In the afternoon or forenoon, always invoke Varuna. Having arranged these doors, worship as prescribed. All the deities mentioned before should be worshipped with their own mantras and devotion. Thus, I have described the disc for your worship. By this sacrifice, one becomes initiated into the solar circle. In this way, O beautiful-faced one, this was formerly spoken to me by the Sun. Samba said: What are the mantras prescribed for the deities in this disc-sacrifice? What is the order of the ritual, and what are the forms, each in detail? Vasudeva said: One should worship Khaṣolka, the presiding deity of the heart, in the previously described lotus. In the central bulb and petals, the limbs such as the heart, etc., should be worshipped. Their name-mantras end with the fourth syllable, and their corners are as previously described. Everywhere, salutation is to be performed; this is the prescribed rule. At the time of offering oblations, the mantras should end with 'svāhā'; in other actions, as appropriate, they should be used accordingly. The Gāyatrī for Khaṣolka is: 'Om khaṣolkāya vidmahe divākarāya dhīmahi tannaḥ sūryaḥ pracodayāt.' The Sāvitrī, O mighty-armed one, is considered to have twenty-four syllables. It is full of all principles, auspicious, belonging to the Brahmin lineage, and dear to the Sun. Thus, these mantras should be used in all actions by those who are independent. Otherwise, the action becomes fruitless here and hereafter. Therefore, with all effort, knowing the mantras and the procedure, performing the ritual properly, one attains the desired result. Samba said: For whom should initiation be performed in the solar circle, and how? When, by whom, and for what purpose? Tell me all this. Vasudeva said: A Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, nobleman, or even a Shudra, whether man or woman, may be initiated in the solar circle. One who is self-motivated and devoted should approach and bow to the guru. The guru, a learned and pure Brahmin, should initiate him. On the sixth day, having kindled the fire according to the prescribed method, having worshipped the Sun, one should offer oblations to the fire. The disciple, having bathed and purified himself, should be marked with the form of Khaṣolka, touching his limbs with darbha grass and unbroken grains. After worshipping the limbs with flowers, the offering should be made. The Sun, Varuna, Arka, and Agni are satisfied through the heart. The offerings should be made with ghee, jaggery, milk, and rice, in proper measure. Having offered three handfuls to the deity, again offer into the fire. Giving to the disciple, and then releasing, at the end, give him a tooth-cleaning stick, twelve finger-breadths long, made from a tree exuding milk. After cleaning the teeth and removing the residue, he should throw it to the east. The mouth-cleaning and the stick should be placed above that. The stick should face the Maitrāvaruṇa, Īśāna, and the gentle direction, avoiding the inauspicious. The mouth of the stick should not face elsewhere; that is condemned. Whichever direction the mouth of the stick faces, one should worship its lord; thus, peace is said to be obtained, as spoken by the Sun himself. Again, having heard these instructions, touching the limbs in order, worshipping the eyes there, and meditating, one should recite the mantras. Having made the resolve and controlled the senses, one should establish the boon after hearing it with concentration. Having sipped water, protected himself, and consecrated the materials, he should bow with the heart in the morning, having bathed and offered oblations to the fire. He should ask about his dream as seen, and if it is auspicious, he should confirm it; if inauspicious, he should perform a hundred oblations with the heart. If in a dream he sees mansions, deities, fire, beautiful rivers, gardens, and groves, Lotuses rich with leaves, flowers, and fruits, and silver lotuses; if he sees in a dream a Brahmin learned in the Vedas, A king endowed with valor, a wealthy and excellent Kshatriya, a Shudra devoted to service, or if he is instructed in the true meaning, Auspicious speech as appropriate, and the touch or ascent of these is considered best. Auspicious vehicles, palaces, boats, and mountains climbed, or attaining the great Bhārgavī, Drinking wine, the ocean, curds, ghee, milk, soma, meat, or sacrificial offerings, a man attains the Kāśyapī. Receiving garments, jewels, various ornaments, vehicles, land, cows, and grain, He attains prosperity; the vision of auspicious dreams and actions following them are all considered auspicious. Therefore, anything else is inauspicious; thus, proper remedies are prescribed. On the seventh day, having drawn and worshipped the Sun, Having satisfied the Brahmins and disciples, bowing to the guru as before, in the order of creation, for the sake of prosperity and liberation, and not otherwise, Having invoked the Sun, one should assign him in all the planets and principles as appropriate. Having meditated on the pure Sun in pure places, one should assign him to the earth and so on, in order. The pure solar circle, as described, should be assigned. Thus, meditating with the mind, one should offer a hundred oblations. With all the mantras in order, this initiation is said to be supreme. Having offered flowers in the solar circle, Placing a flower in the joined hands, having recited the mantra, one should cast it for the purification of the lineage and especially for the name. Wherever that flower falls, that family is declared blessed; the name is joined with the Sun, as said by the Sun himself. Having worshipped, one should recite there the vows spoken by the Sun. Standing facing the Sun in the morning, evening, and noon, One should always perform attendance and worship. Without seeing the Sun, one should not eat by day or night. Having seen the Sun, one may eat; otherwise, never. Nor should one touch it with the feet, nor should one sit there. The shadow of the image should never be crossed, nor should guests ever be crossed. The stars, planets, conjunctions, months, and their lords, The solstices, seasons, fortnights, and days, and whatever is called time, including the year, All of these should be saluted, honored, and worshipped. Therefore, the Sun is the lord of time and is himself called Time. He is said to be the soul of all the luminaries, of all that moves and does not move, of all that is conscious and unconscious. He is always to be praised, saluted, and worshipped by you in every way, O king. By mind, action, and speech, one should avoid reviling the gods. Having removed the offerings, one should present them to the horses. Having washed the hands and feet, one should bow to the Sun. Thus, this supreme initiation has been briefly described to you by me. It bestows both enjoyment and liberation, as explained in detail.

Description of the Method of Worshipping the Sun Vasudeva said: Now I will explain how the Sun is to be worshipped. On the altar, O tiger among the Yadus, listen with focused mind. A disc representing time, auspicious, should be made with eight circles. In the center, a disc shaped like a lotus, surrounded by twelve spokes. In its center, a lotus is described with eight petals. The all-pervading deity, Khaṣolka, radiant with rays, is to be worshipped there. He is always to be worshipped in the center, armed with a thousand rays, with the syllable Om, O mighty-armed one, and possessing four arms. The wise should always worship Aruṇa, the noble elder of the gods, who is auspicious. On the right, worship the goddess Nikṣubhā, consort of Bhāskara. On the right side, worship Revata; on the north, always Piṅgala. Also, O tiger among the Yadus, worship Saṃjñā for prosperity. In the southeast, worship Lekhaka; in the southwest, the Ashvins. In the northwest, worship Manu, the lord Vaivasvata. In the northeast, worship the goddess Yamunā, purifier of the worlds. In the second circle, O hero, worship Space in the east. Then, in the south, the goddess; in the west, Garuḍa; in the north, the noble serpent king, the son of Airāvata. In the southeast, worship Dhelī; in the southwest, Prahelī. In the northwest, the goddess Urvaśī; in the northeast, Vinatā. In the third circle, worship the guru in the east with respect; in the west, the son of the Sun; in the north, Dhiṣaṇa. In the northeast, the son of the Moon, Soma, in the southeast circle. In the south, worship at the corner; in the southwest, worship Rāhu with respect. In the northwest, O hero, always worship Vikaca. In the fourth circle, worship Lekha with respect. In the southeast, the son of Śāṇḍilī; in the south, the southern lord. In the southwest, the god Virūpākṣa; in the west, the lord of waters. In the northwest, always worship the son of the Wind. In the northeast, always worship the god Īśāna. In the north, the wise should worship Kubera, king of the Yakṣas. In the fifth circle, O hero, always worship the twice-born in their own circle. In the east, worship the supreme goddess Mahāśvetā, the great-minded one; also Śrī, prosperity, glory, fortitude, and elevation. O tiger among the Yadus, worship Earth, great fame, Indra, Viṣṇu, Aryaman, Bhaga, and Parjanya. Also worship Vivasvant, the Sun, Tvaṣṭṛ, radiant with rays, and Varuṇa in the sixth circle; thus, worship these solar deities. O best of the Yadus, the head, eyes, armor, and weapons; O hero, in the seventh, worship Aruṇa with his chariot. Also, O tiger among the Yadus, always worship the horses in their circle; Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Gandharvas, months, fortnights, and days. Also the year, O son, should be worshipped as before. Whoever always worships the god Bhāskara in this way, He attains the supreme state, where, having gone, he does not grieve. (Om khaṣolkāya namaḥ) Here, the syllables of the root mantra are said to be the limbs. Whoever worships the Sun in this way, Always, on both Saptamīs, he attains the supreme abode. Having said this, the blessed god quickly went to his own abode.

Description of the Solar Dharma Sūta said: Then the mighty king Śatānīka, bowing his head with devotion, spoke to the best of the twice-born, Sumantu: "Oh, the greatness of the god Bhāskara, of immeasurable energy, has been described to me by you, which destroys all sins. Therefore, O virtuous one, I see no god equal to the Sun in the world, nor is there any path for him in the worlds. The universe, O Brahmin, proceeds from the Sun at the time of creation, is sustained by him, and at the end of the age, is again dissolved by him. Having heard thus the greatness of the god Bhāskara, of immeasurable energy, as described by you, it is superior to a hundred horse sacrifices. But, O Brahmin, a great doubt remains in my heart: by what means, O best of the twice-born, does one become free from the ocean of existence? By the grace of the Sun, or of Śiva, how does the god always become pleased, and by which dharma? I have heard of many dharmas, those taught in the Śruti and Smṛti, Vaiṣṇava and Śaiva dharmas, and those found in the Purāṇas. I wish to hear, O Brahmin, the unique solar dharma. O blessed one, all those devoted to solar dharma are most fortunate. Tell me the unique dharma of the god Bhānu. As I listen, I am never satisfied, just as one is never satisfied with nectar. Horse sacrifices and other rituals require many materials and are difficult to perform for twice-born with little wealth. Therefore, tell me an easy means, which accomplishes dharma, desire, and wealth, for the benefit of all mortals, and removes all fear of sin. The solar dharma is meritorious, pure, and destroys sin. Having heard the king's words, the great sage, disciple of Vyāsa, Bowing his head to Vyāsa, spoke these words: Sumantu said: Listen, I will declare an easy means, of great fruit, the supreme of all dharmas, the unique dharma of all dharmas. It was formerly spoken by the Sun to Aruṇa, O lord of men; not to Kṛṣṇa, Brahmā, or Śaṅkara. For all beings immersed in the ocean of existence, this glorious solar dharma has been proclaimed for the welfare of the world. Those with peaceful hearts, devoted to the Sun, and desiring prosperity, who serve this supreme dharma, are called Sauras; there is no doubt. Whether once, twice, or thrice daily, or always, those who remember the Sun with devotion, even once, O Bhārata, Are freed from all sins, even those committed over seven births. Those who always praise Bhānu are not ordinary men; if they fall from heaven, they are to be known as Bhāskaras on earth. One who is not a devotee of the Sun does not remember, worship, or praise the Sun, nor does he attain the Sun. The essence of solar dharma is unwavering devotion to the Sun, which is said to have sixteen limbs, as taught by the Sun to the gods. Morning bath, recitation, oblation, and worship of the deity, O king; worship of the twice-born with devotion, and worship of cows and the sacred fig tree. Hearing of the Itihāsas and Purāṇas with devotion and faith, O tiger among kings, and study of the Vedas as well. With devotion to me, kindness to people, approval in worship, and personally worshipping with devotion the best reciter before me. The book is always best, O gods, and most dear to me. Daily hearing of my stories, with voice, eyes, and limbs moved by emotion. Constant remembrance of me with devotion and faith. If this sixteen-limbed devotion exists even in a barbarian, He is a best of Brahmins, a sage, and noble by birth, and learned. Even if not learned in the four Vedas, my devotee, even if a dog-eater, should be given and accepted from, and worshipped as I am. Whoever offers me a leaf, flower, fruit, or water with devotion, I do not perish for him, nor does he perish for me. Whoever sees me present in all, and all established in me, I am always established in him, and he is always established in me. Having blocked the eighteen half-sectors with eight more, O mighty-armed one, and with other knowledge, Having quickly conquered the difficult guardian, and the half of Bhāskara, having conquered the great energy of the city lords, Whoever meditates on me with unwavering mind and devotion, I always think of him as my own self.

Questions Regarding Solar Dharma Sumantu said: Devotion to the Sun is rare, and worship of the gods is rare. Giving to the Sun is rare, and offering oblations to the Sun is rare. Knowledge of the Sun is very rare, and its practice is also rare. The highest knowledge, that of Khaṣolka, is to be known as even rarer. The highest knowledge is always that of Bhāskara. Those who circumambulate the Sun's temple with devotion, their feet are praiseworthy. Those hands are worthy of praise which perform worship of the Sun. That alone is the blessed tongue which recites hymns to the Sun. That mind is purified which, having abandoned sense objects, is steady in the play of the Sun, fearless and free from anger. Śatānīka said: I wish to hear in detail the method of worshipping the Sun. By your grace, O best of the twice-born, my curiosity is very great. What merit is gained by establishing the Sun, by building a temple for the Sun, by sweeping, and by plastering? What merit is there in making a place, and in waving lights? By sprinkling with blue medicinal water, with dance and auspicious music? What merit is there in offering arghya, in bathing with water, in bathing with the five nectars, and in bathing with curds? What is said about anointing the disc, and the merit of bathing with thunderbolt water, honey, milk, and sugarcane juice? What is the benefit of unction in a pure place with water of kuśa grass and flowers, with water of gold and jewels, and with fragrant sandal water? What is the result of using camphor and aguru water, and what is the fruit of anointing with fragrant substances? What is the merit of offering palm leaves, and of offering a whisk? What is the merit of worshipping with red flowers and garlands? What is the merit of hanging garlands in a pavilion, and of special acts of devotion, and of hanging garlands at home? What is the special merit of offering flowers, and what is the result of incense and lamps, of giving garments and ornaments, and of hearing and reciting sacred texts? What is the merit of giving the hearing of the Veda, O protector of cows, and of giving to the disabled, and by my grace, of greeting and worshipping the Magas? What is the fruit of worshipping the sky, and of worshipping Aruṇa, and whatever else is prescribed, even if unknown, O best of Brahmins? Tell me all this, O Brahmin, out of compassion for the devotees.
Sumantu said: Sumati was a devotee of the Sun, O wise descendant of the Pandavas. Therefore, I will tell you everything; listen attentively, O king.
Salutations to the Lord of beings, salutations to the Lord of all worlds. Salutations always to the Lord of the gods, and to the Lord of all the Varnas. You are Brahma, you are the Lord of the universe, you are Rudra, you are Prajapati. You are Soma, you are also Aditya, you are indeed the very syllable Om. You are Brihaspati, you are Budha, you are Shukra, you are Agni. You are Yama, you are Varuna; salutations to you, son of Kashyapa. By you, this entire world, both moving and unmoving, is pervaded. From you alone has arisen all that exists, including gods, asuras, and humans. Brahma, I, and Rudra were all born, O Lord of the world, at the beginning of the kalpa, for the sake of the world's existence, O sinless one. Salutations to you who are the form of the Vedas, salutations to you who are the form of day. Salutations to you who are the form of knowledge, and to you who are sacrifice. Be gracious to us, O Lord of the gods, Lord of beings, radiant with rays. Grant your favor to us, who are immersed in the ocean of worldly existence, O Lord of cows. Salutations always to Vedanta, salutations to the art of sacrifice.

Sumantu said: Hearing the words of Vishnu, radiant as the Sun, Aditya, filled with compassion, spoke, O tiger among the Kurus. Aditya said: Krishna, Krishna, mighty-armed one, listen to my supreme words. That which you have requested, Krishna, all of it shall come to you. Among the gods, demons, yakshas, gandharvas, serpents, and rakshasas, you, mighty-armed one, will be unconquerable—there is no doubt. You will be capable of protecting the entire world, and your devotion to me will remain unwavering. By my grace, Brahma will always be able to create the world, and Shankara will be able to dissolve it. By my grace, you all will attain the highest state among the wise, without doubt, due to the merit of my worship. Hearing the words of Ravi, the one adorned with the ornaments of cows, the Lord of cows, the bull-bannered one, spoke: By worshipping you, we all, the best of gods, will become blessed. How should we worship you with faith, O Lord? For our highest good, tell us the truth of your nature. We do not see your supreme worshipful form; we see only your radiance, like water separated from the ocean. It is all surrounded by a garland of flames, of many forms and wondrous. But without a form, there is no support for the mind. Without support, O Lord, the mind finds no delight anywhere; and without delight of mind, devotion does not arise in people. Without devotion, even the gods cannot worship you. By your worship, O Lord, people attain dharma and other virtues. Therefore, show us that supreme form of yours, by worshipping which we may attain perfection. Surya said: Well asked, well asked, O Mahadeva, you have questioned rightly, O virtuous one. Listen attentively as I speak everything, O bestower of honor. I am established in the world as the four-formed one, for the welfare of all beings, always the cause of beginning, middle, and end. One of my forms is called Rajasi, known as Brahma; it always creates the world at the beginning of the kalpa. The second is called Sattvika, the supreme, which always preserves the world and destroys evil demons. The third is known as Tamasi, called Ishvara; at the end of the kalpa, she dissolves the three worlds, bearing the trident. The fourth is devoid of qualities, supreme with truth and other virtues; she cannot be seen anywhere, but always exists. By her, all this is pervaded, and my destination is the sacred chant. She is both with and without form, beautiful yet formless. She is present within all beings, yet untouched by the fruits of action, remaining untainted like a lotus leaf in water. She is never lost, always beyond the six, established as the fourth, highly revered. Neither you, nor Vishnu, nor Brahma can touch her without worshipping me, O Lord of beings; never can you reach the form of the sky. That which appeared for your awakening, O three-eyed one, when you were deluded by ego and darkness, was for the illumination of the worlds, surrounded by a garland of flames, established like the pericarp of the universal lotus. By seeing that alone, you all were awakened, and the whole world became illuminated by its rays. Therefore, worship that unsullied, incomparable form of mine, by which you will see my divine form, O three-eyed one. That which first appeared to you, O Lord, is called the sky; at the end of the kalpa, all the gods dissolve into that sky. On its right dissolves Brahma, on its left Janardana, and you, O destroyer of Tripura, always dissolve at the root. Gayatri dissolves in its heart, the mothers of the world; the Vedas with their six limbs dissolve at its crown. In its belly, all the world, moving and unmoving, dissolves; and from it again arises everything, beginning with Brahma, both mobile and immobile. The sky is called Akasha, and the earth is known as Nikshubha. O three-eyed one, Akasha is my highest good, and Nikshubha is my beloved. By me, Nikshubha, all the world is pervaded, O three-eyed one. Therefore, worship the sky, as should Brahma and Keshava. Worship that great form of mine, the sky, O three-eyed one, for a thousand divine years on Mount Gandhamadana. Then you will attain the supreme sixfold perfection. Janardana, bearer of conch, discus, and mace, should worship me in the form of the sky at Kalapagrama with devotion. Brahma should always worship my sky-form at the holy place of Pushkara, purifier of the worlds, situated in the intermediate region. Thus, by always worshipping me, the Lord of the universe, with three thousand supreme offerings, you will see my supreme form, known to the wise, round like a kadamba fruit, surrounded by a garland of rays. Then Narayana, bowing his head to Ravi, with hands joined in reverence, spoke these words: Vishnu said: If your supreme form is the sky, O incomparable one, then by worshipping that, we all will attain the highest perfection. What is that sky, O Lord? How shall I, Brahma, and Hara, O destroyer of Tripura, worship it with devotion for our highest good? By worshipping which will we attain perfection? Therefore, tell us the characteristics of the sky, O most worshipful one.
