नग्नो यदा दारुवने मुनीनां दृष्ट्वा च तं भैक्ष्यचरं सुरेशम् विहाय दिंडिः स तु तान्सुरर्षींस्ततो रवेर्लोकमथाजगाम
When naked in the Daru forest, the sages saw him, the lord of gods, wandering for alms; Diṇḍī abandoned them and then went to the realm of the Sun.
आगच्छमानं प्रमथास्तमूचुर्देवेश नित्यं भ्रमसे किमर्थम्
As he was approaching, the Pramathas said to him: 'O lord of gods, why do you wander constantly?'
ते भूय ऊचुः प्रमथास्तमेवमत्रैव तिष्ठस्व रवेः पुरस्तात्
Again the Pramathas said to him: 'Remain here itself, before the Sun.'
इत्येवमुक्तः प्रमथैस्तु रुद्रस्तत्रैव तस्थौ रवितोषणाय
Thus addressed by the Pramathas, Rudra stayed there to please the Sun.
उक्तः स तुष्टेन ततः सवित्रा प्रीतोस्मि देवागमनात्तवाहम्
Then, addressed by the pleased Savitri: 'I am delighted by your coming, O carrier of the gods.'
अष्टादशैते प्रमथास्तु भानोश्चतुर्दशान्ये तु रवे रथस्थाः
These eighteen Pramathas belong to Bhanu; fourteen others are stationed in the chariot of the Sun.
यक्षौ च सिद्धौ च निशाचरौ चादित्यात्मजावप्सरसां प्रधानौ 1.124.
Yaksha and Siddha, and the night-dweller, the two sons of Aditya, and the chief among the Apsaras.
इत्यादिदेवप्रवरास्तु सर्वे धात्वर्थशब्दैश्च भवंति सिद्धाः
Thus, all these foremost among the gods become Siddhas through words denoting meanings of elements.
यतश्च कौतुकं ब्रह्मन्नस्माकमिह जायते
Therefore, O Brahman, curiosity arises among us here.
ब्रह्मोवाच भूयस्तव प्रवक्ष्यामि दंडनायकपिंगलौ
Brahma said: I will further tell you about Daṇḍanāyaka and Piṅgala.
मया सह समागम्य पुरा देवैर्विचारितम्
In former times, together with me, the gods deliberated.
ते तु लब्धवरा भूत्वा अमात्याद्या ह्यभीक्ष्णशः
Then, having obtained boons, ministers and others repeatedly acted.
तस्मात्तेषां विघातार्थं प्रवराश्च भवामहे
Therefore, for the sake of obstructing them, we have become the foremost.
संमंत्र्यैवं ततः स्कंदो वामपार्श्वे रवेः स्थितः
Thus, after consultation, Skanda stood at the left side of the Sun.
उक्तश्च स तदार्केण त्वं प्रजादंडनायकः
And at that time, he was addressed by the Sun: 'You are the lord of punishment for the people.'
लिखते यः प्रजानां च सुकृतं यच्च दुष्कृतम्
He who records both the good and the evil deeds of people.
आश्विनौ चापि सूर्यस्य पार्श्वयोरुभयोः स्थितौ 1.124.
And the two Ashvins also stood on both sides of the Sun.
द्वारपालौ स्मृतौ तस्य राज्ञः श्रेष्ठौ महाबलौ
They are remembered as the two chief and mighty doorkeepers of that king.
राजृदीप्तौ स्मृतो धातुर्नकारस्तस्य प्रत्ययः तस्मात्स कार्तिकेयस्तु नाम्ना राज्ञ इति स्मृतः
The root 'rāj' is remembered as shining, and its sign is the letter 'na'; therefore, Kārtikeya is remembered by the name 'king.'
स्रु गतौ च स्मृतो धातुर्यस्य स प्रत्ययः स्मृतः
The root 'sru', meaning 'to go', is remembered, and its sign is also remembered.
प्रथमं यद्भवेद्द्वारं धर्मार्थाभ्यां समाश्रितम्
The first gate, which is supported by righteousness and wealth, is established.
द्वितीयायां तु कक्षायामप्रधृष्टौ व्यवस्थितौ
In the second enclosure, two unassailable ones are stationed.
वर्णस्य शबलत्वाच्च यमः कल्माष उच्यते
Because of the variegated color of his form, Yama is called 'Kalmasha' (the dark one).
स्थितो दक्षिणत तस्य दंडहस्तसमन्वितः
He stands to his right, furnished with a staff in hand.
कुबेरो धनदो ज्ञेयो हस्तिरूपो विनायकः कुबेरः कुशरीरत्वात्स नाम्ना धनदः स्मृतः
Kubera, known as the giver of wealth, is recognized as the elephant-faced Vinayaka; Kubera, because of his deformed body, is remembered by the name 'giver of wealth.'
नायकः सर्वसत्त्वानां तेन नायक उच्यते
He is the leader of all beings; therefore, he is called 'Nayaka.'
रैवतश्चैव दिंडिश्च तौ रवेः पूर्वतः स्थितौ 1.124.
Raivata and Dindi, both, are stationed to the east of the Sun.
प्लुतं गच्छत्यसौ यस्मात्सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः
Because he moves swiftly, he is honored by all the worlds.
डीङ्गतावस्य वै धातोर्दिंडिशब्दो निपात्यते
For the state of 'ḍiṅgati' of the root, the word 'diṇḍi' is used.
इत्येते प्रवराः प्रोक्ता धात्वर्था नैगमैः शुभैः
Thus these eminent meanings of the roots have been declared by the auspicious Vedic authorities.
