When the Lord of gods is worshipped there, he grants a thousandfold result for bathing, charity, and related acts. Brahma said: Again, O most fortunate one, listen as I speak about the supreme merit of the lunar day as declared by Khaga among the gods.
Brahma said: For those whose every religious act is always dedicated to the Sun, there is never poverty or disease in their family. Whoever, with devotion, smears the ground of a temple with cow dung is immediately freed from sin. Whether with white, red, or yellow clay, the one who smears obtains the result he desires. Whoever, fasting, worships Citrabhānu, the creator, with fragrant flowers, attains all desired objects. Lighting a lamp with ghee or sesame oil for the Sun, one attains the world of the Sun, surrounded by hundreds of millions of lamps. By giving lamp oil, a person does not go to hell; lamp oil and sesame seeds destroy great sins. Whoever always gives a lamp in the temples of the Sun, at crossroads or sacred places, is born strong and handsome. Whoever, with devotion, arranges a lamp for the Sun, having attained all desired objects, goes to the city of the attendants of Viṣṇu. Whoever anoints the Sun with sandalwood, aguru, saffron, camphor, and musk, after enjoying good fortune for hundreds of millions of auspicious times in the house of existence, is reborn on earth as a king of kings, without doubt, filled with all desires, honored by all worlds. Offering water mixed with sandalwood and flowers to the Sun, one is honored in heaven with sons, grandsons, and wife.
Brahma said: Whoever, after circumambulating the Sun three times, bows to him with their head touching the ground, attains the highest state. |1| But if a person ascends the temple of the gods using steps, they go to the dreadful hell called Tāmisra by name. |2| Whoever discharges phlegm, urine, or feces within the temple of the Sun, proceeds gradually to hell. |3| Those who offer ghee, honey, milk, water, or excellent sugarcane juice for the bathing of the deity here, attain all desires and reach the Sun's realm. |4| Those who, with devotion, behold the Sun being bathed, O Bull-bannered one, obtain the fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice and attain dissolution, O Bull-bannered one. |5| Those who perform the bathing of the Sun with devotion, O Bhīma, gain the fruit of both the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices. |6| No one should step over the bathing of the Sun; it must be carefully avoided, for stepping over it brings misfortune. |7| Whoever steps over it goes to Tāmisra hell and also to Raurava; therefore, by every effort, the bathing should be performed first. |8| If a person bathes the deity with ghee, they attain the world of the lotus; with honey, they become dear; with water, they reach the abode of ghee. |9| Bathing the lotus-bannered one with sugarcane juice or milk, and thus bathing the Sun with these, one attains the desired result. |10|

Diṇḍira said: Of these seven Saptamīs you have described to me, tell me in detail about the first, O Lord. |1| And tell me about the others as well, O tiger among gods, so that, having observed them, I may go to the Sun's abode. |2| Brahma said: When, on the Saptamī of the bright fortnight, the constellation is Pañcatāraka, that Saptamī is known as Jayā. |3| Whatever is given, offered in fire, recited, offered in libation, or performed in worship of the gods on that day, is said to yield a hundredfold result, and so does worship of the Sun. |4| This Saptamī is dear to the Sun, destroys sin, brings fortune and fame, grants sons, fulfills desires, and bestows the lotus. |5| This observance should be performed according to the prescribed method; listen to that method from me, by which one attains the desired result. |6| On the bright Saptamī called Haṃsa or Haṃsamākhyā, after fasting, it should be performed in this way, O Śaṅkara. |7| The breaking of the fast is on the third day, O bull-bannered one; the wise say the first breaking is after four months. |8| Elsewhere, flowers of the Karavīra tree are prescribed, as well as red sandalwood, and for incense, excellent guggul. |9| Well-cooked kāsāra is the offering to the Sun; with this method, the Sun, lord of the gods, should be worshipped. |10| Brahmins should be worshipped, O Bhīma, with proper foods; at the breaking of the fast, the wise should feed the Brahmins with kāsāra. |11| One should also eat oneself, with self-restraint and observing silence. |12| On the fifth day, eat once; on the sixth, observe night-fasting; after fasting on Saptamī, break the fast on the eighth. |13| The observance should be joined with the sixth, never with the eighth; for those who fast, it is said to be observed on the sixth. |14| Just as the wise fast on the eleventh, so this is prescribed for fasting on the twelfth. |15| Bathe with siddhārthaka seeds, recite the bathing mantra, and use cow dung for purification; let the Sun be pleased here, and use arka wood for brushing the teeth. |16| Thus the method for the first breaking of the fast has been described; listen, O Bhīma, as I tell you the second. |17| Here, jasmine flowers, sandalwood, and sweet rice pudding are the offerings to the Sun; incense should be of vijaya. |18| Brahmins should be fed, and one should eat oneself, reciting the name of the deity so that the Sun may be pleased. |19| One should drink pañcagavya and use khadira wood for brushing the teeth; thus the method for the second breaking has now been told by me. |20| Now hear the method for the third breaking of the fast. |21| The wise should worship the Sun with agasti flowers; sandalwood and flowers are prescribed, and incense should be sihlaka, which greatly pleases the Sun. |22| Rice with broth is the offering, to be given to Brahmins and eaten by oneself. |23| Drink kuśa water and use badarī wood for brushing the teeth, reciting the name of Vikartana for the deity's pleasure. |24| During the rainy season, the worship of the Lord of gods should be performed with fragrances, flowers, and various offerings, as well as diverse spectacles. |25| With gifts of cows and land, and offerings to Brahmins, thus worshipping the Lord of gods, standing before the deity, |26| one should perform the highest merit, blessedness, and recitation of scriptures, and honor the reciter with clothes, fragrances, and incense. |27| Standing before the deity, then recite this mantra: 'O Lord of gods, Lord of the universe, destroyer of all disease and suffering, Lord of the planets, eye of the world, Vikartana, remover of darkness, |28| on this day, O Lord of gods, this Saptamī called Jayā has been performed by me through your grace, blessed, sin-destroying, and auspicious.' |29| Whoever, O hero, performs this Saptamī in this way, all their bathing and other acts become a hundredfold, O mighty one. |30| Having performed this Saptamī, a person gains fame, wealth, grain, gold, noble sons, strength, and prosperity. |31| Having attained this, O tiger among gods, he goes to the world of the Sun, and returning to earth, becomes a king among kings. |32| Thus has been described, O hero, the Saptamī called Jayā, which, when performed, remembered, or heard, grants access to the Sun's world. |33|

Brahma said: O Three-eyed one, the Saptamī in the bright fortnight of Māgha is called Jayantī, meritorious, sin-destroying, and auspicious. |1| Hear, O beloved of Pārvatī, the method by which it should be observed; four breakings of the fast are described here by the learned. |2| On the fifth day, eat once; on the sixth, night-fasting is prescribed; the fast is on Saptamī, and the breaking of the fast is on the eighth. |3| In Māgha, Phālguna, and Caitra months, O virtuous one, beautiful bakula flowers and saffron are to be used as unguents. |4| The offering is modaka sweets, and incense is clarified butter; drinking pañcagavya is the supreme purifier. |5| One should feed Brahmins with modakas as able, O lord of hosts, and give rice to the twice-born as able, O lord of beings. |6| Whoever worships the Sun, honored by the world, in this way at every breaking of the fast, O hero, attains the fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice. |7| At the second breaking, one attains the fruit of a Rājasūya sacrifice. In Vaiśākha, Āṣāḍha, Jyeṣṭha, and Śrāvaṇa months, O virtuous one, |8| for the worship of the Sun, a hundred lotus flowers are prescribed, O virtuous one. |9| White sandalwood, O Bhīma, and incense of guggul are recommended; the offering is jaggery cakes, and the purifying drink is cow dung. |10| For the Brahmins' meal, jaggery cakes are prescribed. |11| Thus the second breaking, sin-destroying, and dear to the Sun, has been described, yielding the fruit of both Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices. |12| Now hear the third breaking for the worship of the Sun. |13| In the months of Bhādrapada and Āśvayuja, O mighty one, |14| and in Kārttika, red sandalwood is prescribed; jasmine flowers are to be used, and incense is vijaya. |15| The offering is clarified butter cakes, and the meal is for the twice-born; drinking kuśa water is the supreme purifier. |16| Thus the third breaking, sin-destroying and dear to the Sun, has been described, yielding the fruit of both Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices. |17| Now I tell you the fourth breaking, sin-destroying and dear to the Sun, yielding the fruit of both Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices. |18| Now, O tiger among gods, hear the auspicious breaking for your welfare. |19| In the months of Mārgaśīrṣa and Pauṣa, O Śiva, |20| and in Māgha, O tiger among gods, hear the complete merits: red oleander flowers and red sandalwood, |21| incense called amṛta, the supreme offering is sweet rice pudding, and buttermilk is to be acquired; the supreme purifying drink is prescribed. |22| Agaru, sandalwood, musta, sihlaka, and tryūṣaṇa, all in equal parts, are to be mixed; this is called amṛta. |23| The names of the great Sun are given here: Citrabhānu, Bhānu, Āditya, and Bhāskara. |24| In every breaking, recite 'May he be pleased.' |25| Whoever worships the blazing one in this way on that date, O Lord of gods, attains the supreme state. |26| By performing Saptamī in this way, O Bhīma, one attains all desires. |27| One desiring sons obtains sons; one desiring wealth obtains wealth; the sick are freed from disease and attain abundant good. |28| At the completion of the year, O Bhīma, worship of the Sun should be performed with fragrances, flowers, and offerings to Brahmins, |29| and with various spectacles, and honoring the reciter. |30| Thus worshipping the Lord of gods and honoring Brahmins and the reciter, one should utter this statement: |31| 'O Lord, may there always be victory for me in acts of righteousness, wealth, and desire.' |32| Then one should dismiss the Brahmins and the best of reciters; whoever does this attains the fruit of victory, |33| and, his soul purified of all sins, goes to the world of the Sun, |34| ascending a splendid celestial chariot, born from a lotus, |35| shining with the brilliance of the Sun, radiant like a bird.' |36|

Description of the Auspicious Rite Brahmā said: On the seventh day of the bright fortnight, when the constellation of Savitṛ is present for the first time, then indeed auspiciousness is attained. On that day, the wise have prescribed bathing the deity with ghee, with milk, O hero, and also with the juice of sugarcane. After bathing the Lord of Deities, one should anoint him with sandal paste; having burned guggul incense, one should offer the auspicious item before him. One should spread pure wheat flour, shining like the moon, mixed with diamond dust and jaggery, adorned with red flowers. Wherever is his horn, O Lord, there a pearl should be placed; in the southeast, a ruby or a red gem should be set. In the southwest, one should offer a makara gem; in the northwest, a padmarāga gem; and finally, a wise person should place a Gāṅgeya gem according to his ability. On the fourth day, one meal is prescribed; on the fifth, night-fasting is enjoined; on the sixth, begging is prescribed, and after that, fasting is ordained. The wise should avoid heretics, those engaged in improper acts, and those who have abandoned vows; on the seventh, one should observe discipline and avoid sleeping during the day. Whoever performs the Bhadrā Saptamī with this procedure, to him the Ṛbhus always grant all auspicious things. Whoever gives an auspicious gift on this day, will have an auspicious son; having attained auspiciousness, the Lord of Beings always abides in auspiciousness. Diṇḍira said: Who is called Bhadrā? How should the ornament be made? What result is known from giving it, and by what procedure is it given? Brahmā said: The sky is called Bhadrā, an incomparable divine symbol; whoever wears it here is freed from all sins by the Sun. It should be made of a lump of rice, four-sided and excellent, mixed with cow’s ghee and pieces of sugar. It should be filled with four kinds of grains, especially with grapes and coconut fruits, and made fragrant, O Lord of Hosts. A wise person should place a sapphire in the center of the Bhadrā, according to his ability, as well as a topaz, an emerald, and a padmarāga gem. An incomparable ruby should be placed in order at the corners; it may be given to a reciter, or to one who serves food, or by oneself. Whoever, having made the Bhadrā in this way, gives it, surely attains all auspicious things and goes to the abode of the Lord of Cows. Then he goes to Brahmaloka, riding a vehicle, without doubt; his brilliance is like the essence of cows, his radiance is also like that of cows. His splendor is equal to the Lord of Cows, and his vigor is like the essence of cows; therefore, having come to earth again, he becomes the Lord of Cows, without doubt. By the grace of the Lord of Cows, O hero, he is worshipped by all-knowing masters. Thus, O Bhīma, the Bhadrā Saptamī has been described; by observing which, a man attains Brahmaloka, O Bhīma. Whoever hears, recites, or performs this, O Lord of Hosts, all of them, having attained auspiciousness, reach that eternal Brahman. Sumantu said: Thus, long ago, Brahmā spoke to Diṇḍi about the Saptamī vow; I have also told you, O Lord, as I have known and heard. Whoever, having taken up the Saptamī rite on earth, abandons it out of desire or fear, should be known as fallen and ignorant. Therefore, uphold it, O hero; the Saptamī vow must not be abandoned. One who abandons it, O hero, is like one who falls from a high place. Whoever, with devotion, causes the Saptamī rite to be heard from the beginning, attains the fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice and then reaches the supreme state. Thus ends the one hundred and first chapter, named 'Description of the Auspicious Rite,' in the Saptamī section of the Brahma Parvan of the glorious Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa.

Description of the Procedure for Worshipping the Constellations Sumantu said: Thus is the Saptamī of the Lord of Gods, the Sun; just as among many wives, one is especially dear to her husband. All lunar days are indeed dear to the Sun, O descendant of Bharata; therefore, on this day, the Sun must be worshipped by men. Śatānīka said: If the Sun is said to be the lord of all lunar days, why is a special sacrifice performed for him on the seventh day by the wise? Sumantu said: On this matter, long ago, the chief of the gods, residing in heaven, was asked by Viṣṇu, O tiger among the Kurus; as he spoke to Hara, so I will tell you everything—listen attentively, O Lord. Long ago, Kṛṣṇa approached the god Brahmā, seated comfortably as chief of the gods, bowed his head, and spoke these words: If this Sun is considered the lord of the lunar days, O Brahman, why is he especially worshipped on the seventh? Tell me, O Lord. Thus addressed by Viṣṇu, the chief of the gods, the blessed Lord, smiling, spoke these words: Brahmā said: The lunar days were given to the gods by the great-souled Sun, except for the seventh, which he kept for himself for proper worship. Whichever day was given to whom, that one is considered its lord; when worshipped on his own day with his own mantras, he grants boons. Viṣṇu said: By the Sun, which day was given to which deity? When worshipped on his own day with his own mantras, what is the result? Brahmā said: The first day was given to Agni, the second to Brahmā; the third to the King of Yakṣas, the fourth to Gaṇeśa. The fifth to the King of Serpents, the sixth to Kārttikeya; the seventh was kept for himself, and the eighth was given to Rudra. The ninth was given to Durgā, the tenth to Yama; the eleventh always to the Viśvadevas. The twelfth to Viṣṇu, the thirteenth to Madana; the fourteenth to Śaṅkara, and the full moon to Soma. The fifteenth, always auspicious, was given by the Sun to the ancestors; these fifteen lunar days are said to belong to Soma. In the dark fortnight, they are consumed by the gods as described; in the bright fortnight, they are filled up, including the sixteenth phase. Each one is inexhaustible, and there the Sun is directly present; he causes both decrease and increase, and thus is considered their lord. The Sun, present even in mere meditation, grants inexhaustible progress; the other deities, when worshipped as desired, also grant wishes with ease. Thus, I will explain everything briefly, O Kṛṣṇa, listen: Having worshipped and offered oblations to Agni on the first day, one obtains nectar, ghee, and all grains as offerings, and gains immense wealth. By worshipping Brahmā on the second day, feeding a celibate, one attains mastery over all knowledge. On the third day, by worshipping the Lord of Wealth, one certainly becomes wealthy; in buying and selling, one gains manifold profit. On the fourth, one should worship Gaṇeśa in all rites; obstacles are removed, and enemies are obstructed, without doubt. By worshipping the Nāgas on the fifth, one is not afflicted by poisons, obtains a wife, sons, and great prosperity. By worshipping Kārttikeya on the sixth, one becomes excellent, intelligent, handsome, long-lived, and renowned. On the seventh, by worshipping the Lord of Protection, the radiant Sun; on the eighth, by worshipping Hara, adorned with the bull, the god grants abundant knowledge and radiance. He removes death, grants wisdom, and cuts the bonds, when worshipped. By worshipping Durgā on the ninth, one easily overcomes difficulties, and always attains victory in battle and litigation. On the tenth, by worshipping Yama, one is freed from all diseases, and rescues a man from hell and death. On the eleventh, as prescribed, by worshipping the Viśvadevas, one obtains offspring, cattle, wealth, grain, and land. On the twelfth, by worshipping Viṣṇu, one always becomes victorious and is honored in all worlds like the Lord of Cows. On the thirteenth, by worshipping Kāmadeva, one surely becomes handsome, obtains a beautiful wife, and fulfills many desires. On the fourteenth, by seeing Śiva, one is endowed with all prosperity, many sons, and much wealth, without doubt. On the full moon, whoever worships Soma with devotion, attains complete sovereignty, which is never diminished. On their own day, the ancestors, when seen, always grant increase of progeny, wealth, protection, longevity, and strength. Even without fasting, these rites grant the stated results; worship, recitation, and offerings, when done with devotion, always please them. With root mantras, names, and limb mantras as described, the lords of the lunar days should be worshipped, seated in the center of a lotus, as before. With fragrant substances, flowers, and offerings, as one is able, even external worship performed yields results. With streams of ghee, sacred sticks, curd, milk, rice, and honey, the prescribed offerings and recitations, performed with a peaceful mind, yield the stated results. Having performed twelve or ten sacrifices with root mantras, names, and limb mantras, these results are obtained with devotion. As stated, so obtained, even greater results are gained here; for as long as one remains in each world, so long as that lunar day lasts. There, the knower of mantras burns away misfortune and becomes like that deity; he is handsome, righteous, a conqueror of enemies, and a king. Whether woman, eunuch, or man, one becomes excellent among people. Thus, O Kṛṣṇa, I have described to you the lunar days; all the deities of the constellations are established in the stars. They grant the desired wishes, and I will tell you about them, O mountain-like one. Wherever the moon is present in a constellation with great fullness, the sacrifice to the deity then yields results. Now I will describe the deities of the constellations in order. All the constellations and their sacrifices are described separately: By worshipping the Aśvins in Aśvinī, one becomes long-lived; one suffering from disease is quickly freed from ailments. In Bharanī, Yama is prescribed, worshipped with black flowers and other auspicious items; with white fragrant substances, one is freed from untimely death. In Kṛttikā, Agni is worshipped with red garlands and other items; one certainly gains the result through offerings. By worshipping Prajāpati in Rohiṇī, one obtains cattle; in Mṛgaśīrṣa, Soma always grants knowledge and health. In Ārdrā, by worshipping Śiva, one attains the world of Yama; worshipped with lotuses and other divine flowers, he grants auspiciousness. In Punarvasu, Aditi is always worshipped in heaven; satisfied, she protects like a mother. In Puṣya, Bṛhaspati grants abundant and auspicious intelligence; in Āśleṣā, the Nāgas are worshipped with songs, fragrances, and sweet foods. Satisfied with proper offerings and meats, they grant favor, O bestower of honor. In Maghā, all the ancestors are worshipped with oblations and offerings; they grant wealth, grain, servants, sons, and cattle. In Phālgunī, Pūṣan is worshipped with auspicious flowers; in the former, he grants victory, in the latter, prosperity. He grants a desired husband to a maiden, and she is united with a man; in this life, one attains beauty and wealth. In Hasta, the Sun is always worshipped, the repository of all splendor; with fragrances and flowers, he grants abundant wealth. In Citrā, Tvaṣṭṛ grants a kingdom free from enemies when worshipped and satisfied; in Svātī, Vāyu grants great strength. In Viśākhā, Indra and Agni are worshipped with red items; one obtains wealth and grain, and always lives with brilliance. In Anurādhā, by worshipping Mitra with red items and devotion, all enjoy prosperity and long life. In Jyeṣṭhā, as before, by worshipping Śakra, one attains nourishment; he becomes foremost among all by virtue and wealth. In Mūla, by worshipping all the divine ancestors with devotion as before, one obtains the same result and is established in heaven. In Pūrvāṣāḍhā, by worshipping the Waters and offering oblations as before, one is quickly freed from bodily and mental suffering. In Uttarāṣāḍhā, by worshipping Viśveśa with flowers and other items, one obtains everything. In Śravaṇa, by worshipping Viṣṇu with white, yellow, and blue items and devotion, one obtains prosperity and great victory. In Dhaniṣṭhā, by worshipping the Vasus with auspicious fragrances and flowers, one is never afflicted by fear, even from great dangers. In Śatabhiṣā, by worshipping Indra, one is freed from diseases; the sick obtain nourishment, health, and prosperity. In Bhādrapadā, by worshipping Aja, shining like pure crystal, one attains devotion and great victory. In Uttarābhādrapadā, by worshipping Ahirbudhnya, one attains supreme peace; in Revatī, Pūṣan, when worshipped, always grants auspiciousness.
Description of the Greatness of Sun Worship Brahmā said: Whoever, with devotion, builds a permanent temple for the Sun, that man leads seven generations to the worlds of the Sun. For as many years as the image of the deity, Ravi, remains in the temple, for that many thousands of years he enjoys happiness in the world of the Sun. Wherever the image of the deity is established in a house with proper marks, and whose mind is unattached, he attains equality with the Sun. Whoever offers to the Lord of Deities flowers that are very fragrant and delightful, with a mind absorbed in that feeling, And various kinds of incense, fragrant ointments, lamps, offerings, and whatever else is desired by oneself— That man, by daily worship, attains the favor of Ravi; the Lord Sun, the master of sacrifice, is pleased even by sacrifices. Sacrifices with many implements and a great variety of materials are obtained by men with wealth and followers. But even if worship is performed with mere blades of durvā grass by devoted men, Ravi grants a result that is hard to obtain even by all sacrifices. Whatever flowers, foods, incense, ointments, beloved ornaments, and red garments, And whatever offerings, foods, and fruits are given, offer those to the Lord of Deities with a mind fixed on him. Worship that primordial Lord of sacrifice as best as you can; having worshipped and established the deity in that very house, Bathe the radiant Sun, the Lord of Day, with flowers, sacred water, fragrances, honey, ghee, and milk.
Brahma said: On the seventh day of the bright fortnight in the month of Phalguna, a man or woman who fasts and worships the remover of darkness, reciting the names of the Sun with devotion, eating moderately, and controlling the senses, should always praise the Sun upon rising, sleeping, and at all times.
