Brahma said: What else, O you who know the Vedas and mantras, should be asked? In whose rite do you see a distinction? By what means does the body, naturally impure, formed from semen and blood, like a worm born from filth, become special? Through various elaborate rites from conception to cremation, some humans attain distinction. But those whose minds, bodies, and speech are corrupted by hidden intentions and improper actions—this group of undisciplined people is condemned by me. The twice-born, who possess the essence of all Vedic rites, surpass all others in every act, even the lowest. But one who commits cruel acts, forbidden deeds, kills a Brahmin, violates a teacher's wife, steals, kills cows, drinks liquor, or delights in another's wife; who speaks falsely, is mad with pride, denies the Veda, abuses the Veda, performs village sacrifices, is a mendicant, full of faults, and hard to approach; who follows forbidden conduct, is a thief, a cheat, intoxicated, a rogue, an actor, deceitful, wicked, eats everything, sells everything—those Brahmins ruined by faults of speech, mind, and body do not attain purity here, even by hundreds of sacrifices.
The sixth lunar day, O great king, always grants all desires. It should be observed with effort at all times by those seeking victory. This great sixth day is beloved of Kartikeya. On it, the great soul attained the leadership of the divine army. Because Skanda became foremost among the gods through its merit, one who eats only at night on the sixth day always obtains his desired goal. Offering water to Kartikeya, facing south, with curds, ghee, water, and flowers, using this mantra, O virtuous one: 'O offspring of the seven sages, Skanda, born of the lord of Svaha, O Rudra, Aryaman, Agni, O mighty one, O son of Ganga, salutations to you. May the commander of the divine army be pleased and fulfill what is in the heart.' Giving one's own food to a Brahmin, and whatever else is available, afterwards he eats at night, using the earth as his plate. Thus, the vow of the sixth day has been lovingly declared by Skanda with effort. Hear it all, O great king, as I am about to speak. Whoever on the sixth day eats only fruit or only at night, remaining disciplined in both bright and dark fortnights, practicing celibacy and concentration, Skanda grants him accomplishment, resolve, satisfaction, kingdom, long life, freedom from disease, and both spiritual and worldly rewards, without doubt. One who fasts at night becomes a true observer of the vow; here or hereafter, he attains the highest fame. He certainly obtains residence in heaven, without doubt. Returning here after time, he receives the promised fruits. He becomes worshipped even by the gods and will be king among kings. Whoever hears the kalpa of the sixth day, O best of the Kurus, attains accomplishment, satisfaction, resolve, and fame.
Shatanika said: Ah, this vow is very difficult; doubt remains in my heart. Having heard the greatness and birth of Kartikeya, O twice-born, of his many births here, O virtuous one, how can such greatness be understood? Is birth superior, O hero, or is action better? This doubt is great for me, seeing the son of the Krittikas. Tell me this decisively so that no doubt remains; speak to me of what is superior, birth or action. Sumantu said: This question was formerly asked of Brahma by his wise disciples. What he said to them, I will tell you; listen to me. The great sages approached the chief of the gods, seated comfortably, and, after bowing, O mighty one, to the priesthood of Vishvamitra, they came with wonder and curiosity, placing devotion and faith before them, bowing with bent necks. The sages said: O Brahman, in the Nadakalpa, what constitutes Brahminhood? Is it from birth, study, body, self-purification, conduct, or action?
Brahma said: Even the study of the Vedas leads to Brahminhood. The Vaishyas and Kshatriyas, like the Brahmins, and even the Rakshasas such as Ravana, the dog-eaters, outcastes, slaves, hunters, Bhillas, fishermen, and others who are low-born, some of them also study the Vedas. When they go to another land, Brahminhood and Kshatriyahood are adopted, through occupations and forms similar to those of Brahmins. Studying the Vedas, or even one Veda, according to order, they marry a pure girl, men born of Brahmin families. Or, having studied the Vedas, even by Kshatriyas and Vaishyas, they may acquire the Gauḍa or Dakshinatya caste. Because of unknown Shudra status, they attain Brahminhood at will. Therefore, the distinction created by Vedic study and practice is not known. The authors of the scriptures have said this, following the path of reason. Hearing this view, the good, free from envy, accept it. The Vedas do not purify those without proper conduct, even if studied along with the six limbs.

Whatever is considered inauspicious by nature among Shudras is also found among Brahmins, but for them it is not without obstacles. Therefore, neither mantras, nor fire offerings, nor even animal sacrifice at the altar—none of these are causes for Brahminhood, just as Shudras cannot perform such acts. Those bound by the bonds of karma, whose minds are disturbed by the fires of worldly suffering, wander in the forest of birth and death, thirsting for happiness, but, relying on the unfortunate, never find peace. Those men of the four classes who are base in their actions are seen to have a mixture of all dharmas. Shudras and Brahmins and others are not different in birth; because all dharmas are equal, rites and initiations are meaningless. By differences in practice, separation, death, and so on, by associating or not associating with others, Shudras and Brahmins are the same. By intellect, ability, nature, dharma, birth, wealth, duties, merit and demerit, and all bodily qualities, through bonds, restraints, various means of suffering, punishments, and the lack thereof, and by the pain of poison and other afflictions, those of sattvic, rajasic, and tamasic nature are repeatedly tormented. By phlegm, wind, bile, and other dreadful conditions, sometimes by loss of livelihood, by nectar and poison, by good and bad, by adornment, by the acts of love and desire, by the hope of gaining wealth, by the fall of many groups of beings, one attains various states of accomplishment, driven by desires of self-love and hatred, and the urge to protect what is accepted. By excessive agitation, disturbance, hunger, emaciation, and disease, by means of suffering, cunning, emptiness, and peace, by unworthy actions, those nearby are considered the same. Harming creatures, speaking falsehoods, associating with the wicked, being heartless, adulterous, practicing low deeds, eating everything like ghosts, being of bad family, evil conduct, living off kings, harming Brahmins, doing forbidden acts, being wealthy but wicked—hunters kill deer in the forest for clothing, and in the same way, many wicked people eat flesh by their acts. Some study Vedic arguments but wish for the killing of creatures, and the lowest sell the Veda for gain by deceit. Deceitful, consumed by envy, greedy, foolish, intoxicated, flatterers, beggars, cruel, miserly, fond of quarrels, wicked women wandering with hired men, braggarts, violent, and skilled in plunder, wandering hirelings, speakers of harsh words, selling what should not be sold, eating what should not be eaten, those who perform Shudra's work are the lowest of men, engaged in service, teaching, trade, agriculture, and so on, seizing wealth from outside, goods, grain, and money. They do not abandon internal faults born of anger, nor evil intentions; the best among them are those who crush glass. The twice-born do not always accept clothes, nor do they give up what should be abandoned; how then are they teachers on earth? Elephants, wrestlers, braggarts, fierce in their actions, those who kill like lions kill animals—seeing a mendicant sage, they, thinking themselves superior, insult and despise the poor and the hostile. Therefore, worldly beings, stained by mental afflictions, bound by similar birth, bad character, and sorrow, are the same. A Brahmin who desires a passionate Shudra woman for intercourse—she, in the fulfillment of desire, conceives from union. Men and women overcome by desire are attracted to Shudras for intercourse, and Brahmins too bring them pleasure. But those who are different by birth, like cows, horses, camels, and elephants, do not conceive among different species, even if they desire pleasure. Just as a bull mates with a cow, and a stallion mates with a mare, so too does a she-camel delight with a camel, and a female elephant is happy with an elephant. But when a woman of another species has intercourse with a man, she does not conceive, nor does she find pleasure. When a human woman has intercourse with an animal, she does not conceive from that act, and such union is not proper. There is no such distinction in sexual union between a woman and a man by which the difference between Brahmin and Shudra is clearly diminished. By reciting the Veda alone, one does not attain the goal, nor by rituals, but by many groups of dull-witted people in an undistinguished state. In the body and the embodied, impure and unstable, afflicted by faults like desire and hatred, the mind, whirling like a potter's wheel in the ocean of sense objects, tormented by terrible suffering and fear, in a society without a true master, afflicted by the fire of birth, death, old age, sorrow, and misfortune, in a lowly body, no distinction is perceived. Therefore, the division among humans is established by the force of convention. Brahminhood comes from association with Brahmins, and a Brahmin woman serves accordingly. Having abandoned her husband, driven by the desire for sweet words and intoxication, a courtesan serves a gallant or even servants. Others fall from Brahminhood by committing great sins; thus, the notion of caste and such distinctions is merely a fabrication.
