आरामेषु पवित्रेषु शुचिष्वायतनेषु च
They reside in gardens, in pure places, and in clean sanctuaries.
श्मशाने भस्मशालासु पलालेषु तटेषु च
In cremation grounds, in ash-houses, in straw heaps, and on riverbanks.
अविविक्तेषु स्थानेषु निर्जनेषु वनेषु च
In secluded places, in deserted spots, and in forests.
श्वेताश्च कपिलाश्चैव ये सर्पास्त्वनलप्रभाः
Those serpents who are white or tawny, and those with a fiery glow.
रक्तवर्णाः सुवर्णाभाः प्रवालमणिसंनिभाः
Those of red color, golden shine, and resembling coral or gems.
नानाविचित्रराजीभिरतसीवर्णसन्निभाः 1.36.
With various and wondrous stripes, resembling the color of the flax flower.
काकोदरनिभाः केचिद्ये च अंजनसन्निभाः
Some resemble the belly of a crow, and some are like the color of collyrium.
यस्य सर्पेण दष्टस्य दंशमंगुष्ठमंतरम्
For one bitten by a serpent, if the bite is within a finger's breadth.
यस्य सर्पेण दष्टस्य दंशं द्व्यंगुलमंतरम्
For one bitten by a serpent, if the bite is within two fingers' breadth.
यस्य सर्पेण दष्टस्य सार्धं द्व्यंगुलमzतरम्
For one bitten by a serpent, if the bite is within two and a half fingers' breadth.
अनंतः प्रेक्षते पूर्वं वामपार्श्वे तु वासुकिः
Ananta looks first to the left side; Vasuki dwells on the left flank.
चलते भ्रमते पद्मो महापद्मो निमज्जति
Padma moves and wanders; Mahapadma sinks down.
सर्वेषां कुरुते रूपं कुलिकः पन्नगोत्तमः
The noble serpent Kulika assumes the form of all.
दक्षिणा तक्षकस्योक्ता कर्कोटस्य तु नैर्ऋती उत्तरा शंखपालस्य ऐशानी कंबलस्य तु
The southern direction is assigned to Takshaka, the southwest to Karkotaka, the north to Shankhapala, and the northeast to Kambala.
अनंतस्य भवेत्पद्मं वासुकेः स्यात्तथोत्पलम्
The emblem of Ananta is the lotus, and that of Vasuki is the blue lotus.
पद्मस्य तु भवेत्पद्मं शूलं पद्मेतरस्य तु 1.36.
The symbol of Padma is the lotus, while that of Padma's counterpart is the trident.
अनंतकपिलौ विप्रौ क्षत्रियौ शंखवासुकी पद्मकर्कोटकौ शूद्रौ सदा ज्ञेयौ मनीषिभिः
Ananta and Kapila are to be known as Brahmins, Shankha and Vasuki as Kshatriyas, and Padma and Karkotaka as Shudras, according to the wise.
अनंतकुलिकौ वर्णतो ब्रह्मसंभवौ
Ananta and Kulika, by caste, are born from Brahma.
तक्षकश्च महापद्म ईषत्पीतौ बभूवतुः
Takshaka and Mahapadma are described as having a slightly yellow hue.
हयं यानं वृषं छत्रं राजानमथ पावकम्
A horse, a vehicle, a bull, a parasol, a king, and fire.
पूर्णकुम्भः पताका च कांचनं मणयस्तथा एतेषां दर्शनं श्रेष्ठं कन्या चैकप्रसूयिका
A full water pot, a banner, gold, and jewels—these are considered the best visions, as is a maiden born of one mother.
चतुःषष्टिः समाख्याता भोगिनो ये तु पन्नगाः । अदृश्यास्तेषु षट्त्रिंशद्दृश्यास्त्रिंशन्महीचराः
Sixty-four serpents called Bhogins are described; among them, thirty-six are invisible, thirty are visible and dwell on earth.
विंशच्च स्रग्विणः प्रोक्ताः सप्त मंडलिनस्तथा । राजीवन्तो दश प्रोक्ता दर्व्यः षोडश पंच च

Dundubha, Dundubha, Chetabha, and Indravahana—thus, the number of serpents is remembered as one hundred and ninety.
वराहकर्णीं गजपिप्पलीं च गांधारिकां पिप्पलदेवदारु
Varahakarni, Gajapippali, Gandharika, Pippali, and Devadaru.
लक्षणं सर्वैनागानां रूपवर्णौ विषं तथा ॥ 1.36.
The characteristics of all serpents are their form, color, and also their venom.
तस्मात्संपूजयेन्नागान्सदा भक्त्या समन्वितः
Therefore, one should always worship the serpents with devotion.
श्रावणे मासि पंचम्यां शुक्लपक्षे नरा धिप । द्वारस्योभयतो लेख्या गोमयेन विषोल्बणाः
In the month of Shravana, on the fifth day of the bright fortnight, the king should draw powerful serpents on both sides of the doorway with cow dung.
पूजयेद्विधिवद्द्वारं दधिदूर्वाक्षतैः कुशैः । गंधपुष्पोपहारैश्च ब्राह्मणानां च तर्पणैः
He should properly worship the doorway with curd, durva grass, unbroken rice, and kusha grass, with offerings of fragrance and flowers, and by satisfying Brahmins.
ये त्वस्यां पूजंतीह नागान्भक्तिपुरःसराः।। न तेषां सर्वपतो वीर भयं भवति कर्हिचित्
Those who worship the serpents here with devotion, O hero, never have any fear from serpents at any time.
