He who is beyond the senses, ungraspable, subtle, unmanifest, eternal, pervading all beings, inconceivable—he alone arose by himself. He who is the twenty-sixth principle in the world, the supreme person, the radiant one, O mighty-armed, is called the supreme Brahman. Desiring to create various beings, he meditated and from his own body, at the beginning, he released his seed into them. From him arises everything—divine, demonic, and human; the seed, semen, and virile energy are all described as fierce and powerful. These are the names of virility as declared by the self-born. Then there was a golden egg, surrounded by a garland of flames, O Lord. In it, Brahma was born by himself, the grandfather of all worlds, the eldest among the gods, four-faced, the supreme, the grandfather. The knower of the field, the person, the creator, Shambhu, Narayana—by these synonymous words, Brahma is spoken of. He is always called Viranchi and Kanjaja by the wise, O dear one.

One should never give or eat food that is contaminated. O best of kings, whoever, out of greed, eats food in between (meals or rites), perishes in this world and the next. Just as, in former times, the Vaiśya named Dhanavardhana— Śatānīka said: How did he previously eat food in between? What is meant by 'in between,' and how is it done? Sumantu said: In the Kṛta age, O king, there was a Vaiśya living at Puṣkara, named Dhanavardhana, rich in wealth and grain. During the hot season, O king, after performing the Vaiśvadeva rite, together with his sons, brothers, friends, and relatives, he would take meals consisting of various foods.

That very land between the Sarasvatī and Dṛṣadvatī rivers is called Brahmāvarta. The conduct that is established in that land by tradition among the varṇas and their subgroups is called good conduct. Kurukṣetra, Matsya, Pañcāla, and Śūrasena—this is the land of the Brahmarṣis, next to Brahmāvarta. All people on earth learn their own customs from those born in this land. The region between the Himālaya and Vindhya mountains, east of Vinaśana and west of Prayāga, is called Madhyadeśa. From the eastern to the western sea, the land between those two mountains is known as Āryāvarta by the wise. Where the black antelope and the cow roam naturally, that is known as the land of sacrifice; beyond that is the land of the mlecchas. O best of twice-born, one should always reside in these auspicious lands; but wherever one lives, if he is afflicted by poverty, he should remain. O best of twice-born, this is the origin of dharma as declared by the wise, and the source of all this, in brief, not in detail.

Thus, whoever follows the conduct of women as described above attains the complete threefold aim of life and the worlds that arise from it. Thus ends the eighth chapter, called 'The Description of the Conduct of Men Regarding Women in the Duties of Marriage,' in the Brahma Parvan of the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Samhita of one hundred and fifty thousand verses.

Among these, the children and siblings, as well as the younger husband and similar wives, are considered of equal status. Anyone inferior is to be instructed, but until she is established with the fitness of sons and good fortune, she is not to be considered so. Wherever the husband is always superior, the conduct of women is praised when it is in harmony with worship and proper behavior.

Having placed the image of the deity before them, O best of kings, the Brahmins and others of the twice-born castes should listen, as well as the Shudras and others. The Vedic and Smriti-based dharma is declared here, O noble king; therefore, except for Shudras, the Brahmins alone should listen, never otherwise. A Brahmin who studies this scripture, firm in his vows, is never tainted by faults arising from mind, speech, or body. And those Brahmins and others who listen with devotion, O king, are freed from all sins and ascend to heaven, O Lord. If a Brahmin makes all the castes listen, O best of kings, he is called the guru of all castes here. He is to be honored at all times by all castes, O ruler of men; he alone deserves the entire earth. This is the highest auspicious rite, this increases wisdom, this always brings fame, this is the supreme liberation. In this, dharma is fully explained, along with the merits and faults of actions, and the eternal conduct of all four castes. Conduct is the foremost dharma, as stated in the scriptures, O noble king; therefore, a twice-born who is always endowed with conduct is considered self-controlled. A Brahmin who deviates from conduct does not enjoy the fruit of the Vedas; one who is endowed with conduct is remembered as enjoying the full fruit. Thus, seeing the course of dharma through conduct, the sages have accepted conduct as the supreme root of all austerity. Other men, O king, have always relied on conduct; thus, in this Purana, the praise of conduct is given. The accounts, O king, and those spoken by learned men, the origin of the three worlds, the supreme rites, the rules for listening to history are described here. Also, O king, the greatness of the reciter is told here, the rules for vows, conduct in the ashramas, and the highest rule for the initiated. The approach to wives and others, the characteristics of marriages, the characteristics of men and royal women are described here. The rules for great sacrifices, the eternal scriptural procedures, the characteristics of the earth, and the excellent traits of deity worship are told. The characteristics of livelihoods, the vows of the initiated, what is edible and inedible, purity, and the purification of substances are described. The yoga of women, asceticism, liberation, renunciation, and the complete dharma of kings, as well as the determination of duties, are explained. The greatness of Savitri, O lord of peoples, and of the holy places, the greatness of Narayana and Rudra are described. The great fortune of Brahmins, the greatness of the book, the greatness of goddess Durga, and of truth, O wise one, are spoken. The concise arrangement of dharma for women and men, the division of dharma, gambling, and the purification of reciters are described. The treatment of Vaishyas and Shudras, the origin of mixed castes, the dharma in times of distress for castes, and the rules for atonement are explained. The rules for sandhya, purification after death, bathing and offering libations, the rules for Vaishvadeva, and the rules for eating, O king, are described. The characteristics of the tooth-stick, the excellent arrangement of the feet, the journey through samsara, and the threefold origin of actions are told. The supreme liberation through actions, the examination of merits and faults, the characteristics of wives, and the examination of vessels are explained. The birth of the embryo, the fruit of actions, O king, the dharma of birth, family, and Veda, O ruler, are described. The rules for those observing the Vaitana vow are also spoken by the Lord, Brahma, to the great-souled Shankara of the Kurukula. Thus, by Shankara, the teachings of Vishnu were told, O descendant of Kuru; and again, by Vishnu, they were spoken to Narada, O king. From Narada, Indra received them; from Indra, Parashara; from Parashara, Vyasa; and from Vyasa, I received them, O Lord. Thus, this excellent Purana has been received through succession; listen, O king, to the supreme benefit from me. All the Puranas should be known, O best of men; twelve thousand verses are declared here by the wise. They have again grown here through various stories, O bull among men; just as the Skanda, so is this Bhavishya, O descendant of Kuru. The Skanda is known to have one hundred thousand verses for the worlds; this Bhavishya was composed by the sage with fifty thousand verses.
Now the second chapter: Description of creation, the Puranas, and the origin from Brahma's fifth mouth. Sumantu said: Listen, O mighty-armed one, to this Purana with five characteristics; by hearing it, a person is freed from the sin of killing a Brahmin. The five divisions are declared here by the self-born: the first is called Brahma, the second is remembered as Vaishnava, the third is called Shaiva, the fourth is known as Taashtra, and the fifth, called Pratisarga, is highly honored by all worlds. Understand these divisions and their characteristics from me: creation, dissolution, genealogy, and the periods of Manus. The accounts of genealogies are also the five characteristics of the Purana, adorned with fourteen branches of knowledge, O descendant of Kuru. The four Vedas, Mimamsa, the extension of logic, the Purana, and the dharma-shastra—these are the fourteen branches of knowledge. Ayurveda, Dhanurveda, Gandharva, these three, and Arthashastra as the fourth—thus, there are eighteen branches of knowledge. First, the creation of all beings is described here; by hearing it, one is freed from sin and attains supreme peace. Formerly, O dear one, the world was enveloped in darkness, without characteristics, unknowable, beyond reasoning, and entirely dormant, as if asleep. Then, the Lord, the unmanifest, manifesting this, the great elements, full of vigor, arose, dispelling the darkness.
Chapter Three: A summary of all the sacraments from conception onwards, and a description of the procedures for sipping water and related rites. Śatānīka said: O best of twice-born, please describe to me, in order, the sacraments beginning with birth-rites for each class, and the duties of the āśramas. Sumantu said: Conception, begetting a son, parting the hair, then the birth-rite, feeding of solid food, tonsure, and investiture with the sacred thread— The Baijika and Gārbhika rites are also to be performed for twice-borns. These are purified by study, vows, offerings, the threefold Veda, sacrifices, and the recitation of scriptures. Through the great sacrifices and Brahmanical rites, the body is sanctified. Listen attentively, O King, to how this sanctification is performed. For a male, after the umbilical cord is cut, the birth-rite is prescribed. He is to be given honey, ghee, and gold to taste, accompanied by mantras. Some, O King, wish the naming ceremony to be on the tenth day; others, on the twelfth; yet others, when the month is complete. Some wise men say it should be on the eighteenth day, on an auspicious lunar day, at a favorable hour, and under a propitious star. For a Brāhmaṇa, the auspicious name is 'Śivaśarman'; for a Kṣatriya, it is said to be 'Induvarma.'

For a Vaiśya, the name should be associated with wealth; for a Śūdra, it should be one that is considered lowly. 'Dhanavardhana' is always for a Vaiśya; 'Sarvadāsa' for one of inferior birth. Manu has also stated the best characteristics of a name: for a Brāhmaṇa, it should end with 'śarman'; for a king, it should convey protection; for a Vaiśya, it should indicate prosperity; for a Śūdra, service. For women, the name should be pleasant, gentle, clear in meaning, and charming, ending with a long vowel and expressing a blessing. On the twelfth day, O king, the child should be taken out of the house; some hold it should be in the fourth month. The feeding of solid food should be in the sixth month, as is customary in the family. The tonsure ceremony for all twice-borns should be performed in the first or third year, O descendant of the Kurus. The investiture with the sacred thread for a Brāhmaṇa is to be done in the eighth year from conception; for a Kṣatriya, in the eleventh; for a Vaiśya, in the twelfth. For a Brāhmaṇa desiring spiritual brilliance, it should be done in the fifth year; for a king seeking strength, in the sixth; for a Vaiśya desiring wealth, in the eighth. The Sāvitrī (initiation) should not be delayed beyond the sixteenth year for a Brāhmaṇa, the twenty-second for a Kṣatriya, and the twenty-fourth for a Vaiśya. After this age, those uninitiated at the proper time are fallen from the Sāvitrī, called outcastes, unless they perform the Vrātyastoma sacrifice. Nor, even in distress, should those who are unpurified by these rites ever form a Brāhmaṇa marriage or sexual union with Brāhmaṇas. O king, the belts of those observing vows are of three kinds: black-deerskin for Brāhmaṇas, ruru-deerskin for Kṣatriyas, and goat-hair for Vaiśyas. Their garments, in order, are of various types: for Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas, linen, hemp, and so forth. The sacred girdle for a Brāhmaṇa should be made of three smooth strands of muñja grass; for a Kṣatriya, of murva fiber; for a Vaiśya, of hemp threads. If muñja is unavailable, it should be made of kuśa, aśmantaka, or balvaja grass, with three, one, three, or five knots, respectively. The sacred thread for a Brāhmaṇa should be of cotton, worn over the left shoulder in three strands; for a Kṣatriya, of hemp; for a Vaiśya, of wool or sheep's hair. Their staffs are also of three kinds: for a Brāhmaṇa, of bilva or palāśa wood; the third, of plakṣa wood, O king. For a Kṣatriya, of vaṭa or khadira wood, or another from vetasa; for a Vaiśya, of pilu or udumbara, or even aśvattha wood. These staffs, O mighty-armed, are to be carried according to dharma. The staff for a Brāhmaṇa should reach the hairline; for a Kṣatriya, the forehead; for a Vaiśya, the tip of the nose. All should be straight, gentle in appearance, not alarming to people, smooth, and not scorched by fire. Having taken the desired staff and facing the sun, one should properly worship the teacher and then beg for alms as prescribed. The twice-born, after initiation, should beg for alms first from his own house; the Kṣatriya from the middle of the house; the Vaiśya from the back. He should beg first from his mother, sister, or maternal aunt, or his own maternal cousin—whoever does not disrespect him. She should give him gold, silver, or food, which is to be assigned as his vessel. Having gathered as much alms as needed, without deceit, he should offer it to the teacher, then eat, having sipped water, facing east and pure. Eating facing east grants long life; facing south, fame; facing west, prosperity; facing north, truth. The twice-born, having sipped water, should eat attentively; after eating, he should again sip water and touch the orifices with water. He should always honor the food and eat it without disdain; by seeing it, he becomes joyful and content, O Bhārata. Having saluted, he should then eat; thus Manu has said. Food that is honored always grants strength and vigor. But if eaten without honor, it destroys both strength and vigor.

Having placed both feet evenly and tied up his hair, O king, not standing, not conversing, nor looking around, not hurrying or angry, having abandoned all distractions— With calm water, having sipped, he should attain purity; not with hot, frothy, impure, discolored, tasteless, or foul-smelling water, nor with water containing bubbles, O Bhārata, nor should a learned person sip such water. For a Brāhmaṇa, five sacred waters are mentioned in the right hand: the water for the gods, for the ancestors, for Brahman, for Prajāpati, and the 'gentle' water. The line above the base of the thumb, O king, is called the Brāhmaṇa water by Vasiṣṭha and other eminent twice-borns. At the base of the little finger is the water for the body; at the tip of the fingers, the water for the gods; between the index finger and thumb, the water for the ancestors; in the middle of the palm, the 'gentle' water, which is praised for divine rites. Worship of the gods, offering of oblations, and scattering of sacred substances should be done with the water for the gods, O best of the Kurus. Offering food, as well as the sprinkling of grains, O king, and the oblation of parched grain, should be performed with the 'gentle' water; the Prajāpatya water is used for such rites. Touching the water-pot and drinking curds should always be done with the 'gentle' water, O king, by the wise. The offering to the ancestors should be done with the ancestral water; touching what is impure should be done with the Brāhmaṇa water. With the hand shaped like a cow's ear, focused and with a pure mind, the twice-born who sips water three times in silence— Hear what result he attains, and how he pleases the gods. The first sip satisfies the Ṛgveda; the second, the Yajurveda; the third, the Sāmaveda. When he first wipes his mouth from the base of the right thumb, the Atharvaveda is pleased, O king, without doubt. When he wipes a second time, the Itihāsas and Purāṇas are satisfied; when he touches his head, O king, the sages are pleased. By touching his hair, he pleases the Ṛṣis; by touching his eyes, he pleases the Sun. By touching his nose, he pleases the Wind, without doubt; by touching his ears, he pleases the directions. By touching his arms, he pleases Yama, Kubera, Varuṇa, Indra, and Agni. By touching his navel, he pleases the vital airs; thus goes the Vedic teaching, O king. By sprinkling his feet, he pleases Viṣṇu; by pouring water on the ground, he pleases the Nāgas led by Vāsuki. The drops that fall on the earth, O king, please the fourfold host of beings. With the thumb and index finger, he should touch the eyes, O king; with the ring finger and thumb, the nose; with the middle finger and thumb, the mouth, O best of the Bharatas. With the little finger and thumb, the ears, O king; with the fingers, the arms; with the thumb, the auspicious mark. The navel, O best of the Kurus, and the head, with all the fingers. The thumb is said to represent Agni, the index finger Vāyu, the ring finger Sūrya, the little finger Maghavan (Indra), and the middle finger Prajāpati, O best of the Bharatas. Thus, by sipping water, the Brāhmaṇa always pleases the universe and all the deities and worlds, without doubt. Therefore, the Brāhmaṇa is always to be honored, for he embodies all the gods. He should always sip water with the Brāhmaṇa water. He should never use the ancestral water for bodily purification; with the heart-line, the Brāhmaṇa is purified; with the throat-line, the king; with the Vaiśya-line, the Vaiśya; with the Śūdra-line, the Śūdra. When the right hand is raised, it is called 'upavīta'; with the left, 'prācīnāvīta'; across the neck, 'nivīta.' The girdle, skin, staff, sacred thread, and water-pot—if lost, the knower of mantras should obtain new ones. He should always sip water with the sacred thread over the left shoulder and seated with knees together, O king. Thus, having sipped water, the Brāhmaṇa attains purity, O Bhārata. The lines in the middle of the palm, O Bhārata, are to be known as the Gaṅgā and other rivers, O best of the Bharatas; the joints of the fingers are to be known as mountains. O king, the right hand of the Brāhmaṇa is the embodiment of all the gods. The procedure for touching water has thus been explained, O king. Of all the worlds, whoever sips water in this way ascends to heaven.

Sumantu said: For a Brahmin, the ritual of cutting the hair (keśānta) is prescribed in the sixteenth year; for a Kshatriya, in the twenty-second year; for a Vaishya, three years after that. For women, O King, the hair-cutting is always to be performed without mantras, for the sake of bodily purification, at the proper time and according to division. The marriage rite is considered the sacrament for women, not the Upanayana; she may reside either in the teacher’s house or in her own home, performing the fire rituals. Thus, O King, I have described to you the Upanayana rite, which is the supreme marker of birth for the twice-born, O mighty-armed one. Now, O strong one, I shall tell you about the discipline of action (karma-yoga): After investing the student with the sacred thread, the teacher should first instruct him in purity. He should teach good conduct, fire rituals, and the worship at twilight; he should instruct worthy students, self-controlled and facing north. The one to be taught should always make the gesture of joining the hands for Brahman, be self-controlled, wear simple clothes, be focused, cheerful, and well-established. At the beginning and end of study, the feet of the teacher should always be worshipped; joining the hands together is called the Brahma-anjali. When grasping the teacher’s feet, the right hand should touch the right foot, the left the left; the hands should be crossed when embracing the teacher. The teacher should always, diligently, instruct the student at the proper time, saying, 'Study,' or, 'Pause.' One should always utter the syllable Om at the beginning and end of study; if Om is not pronounced at the start, the recitation leaks away, and if not at the end, it is scattered. Hear also, O King, how a twice-born should properly utter Om: sitting facing east, purified with sacred objects. Purified by three pranayamas, he becomes worthy to utter Om; now hear, O descendant of Kuru, the characteristics of Om. Prajapati extracted the syllables A, U, and M from the three Vedas, as well as the words Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, and Svaḥ. From the three Vedas, he drew forth a quarter from each; thus, the supreme Prajapati composed the Sāvitrī with the word 'tat.' Reciting this syllable and the Sāvitrī, preceded by the vyāhṛtis, at both twilights, the Brahmin attains merit. Reciting this triad a thousand times, a twice-born, even if burdened by great sin, is freed from it within a month, as a snake sheds its skin. If one omits this recitation at the proper time and with the proper act, a Brahmin, Kshatriya, or Vaishya is censured by the virtuous. Now hear, O King, with focused mind, the supreme mouth of Brahman: the three great, imperishable vyāhṛtis, preceded by Om. The Sāvitrī, in three parts, is to be known as the mouth of Brahman; whoever recites it daily for three years, without sloth, attains the supreme Brahman, becoming like air, with a form of space. The single syllable, the supreme Brahman, is pranayama, O subduer of foes. There is nothing higher than the Sāvitrī; silence surpasses even truth, as do austerity, sacrifice, and giving, O King. These are always inexhaustible, as the divine Manu has said; the lower syllable is to be known as Brahman and Prajapati. Of all sacrifices, the sacrifice of recitation is superior, O King, performed with various qualities and subtle meanings. The dust-offering is said to be a hundred thousand times greater; the mental sacrifice is said to be a thousand times greater. The four cooked sacrifices, combined with the prescribed sacrifice, do not equal even a sixteenth part of the recitation sacrifice. A Brahmin is perfected by recitation alone—there is no doubt of this. Whether he does other things or not, he is called a true Brahmin. Standing, he should recite the Sāvitrī at sunrise; sitting, at sunset, facing the proper constellations. The morning recitation is at the start of the day, the evening at the start of night. The evening recitation is to be known as under the stars, the morning as with the sun. Standing and reciting the evening prayer, one removes the sin of night; sitting and reciting the evening prayer, one destroys the sin of the day. Whoever does not perform the morning or evening recitation, O King, is to be expelled from all twice-born duties, like a Shudra. Near water, with discipline, established in the daily rite, one should recite the Sāvitrī, even while moving, with concentration, in the forest, or during daily study with the Veda’s aid. There is no fault in reciting during periods of ineligibility, nor in sacrificial mantras; the daily rite is not subject to ineligibility, for it is a Brahma-satra. The offering to Brahman, performed during ineligibility, is fruitful; if a twice-born recites even a single Rig verse daily, with discipline, milk, clarified butter, and honey flow for him. Service to the fire, begging, sleeping on the ground—these are proper for the teacher. After completing his studies, the twice-born should serve the teacher’s son, be a giver of knowledge, righteous, and pure. Ten are fit to be taught: one who is trusted, capable, not greedy, virtuous, and fit for self-study. He should not speak without being asked, nor answer improper questions. Even if he knows, the wise should act as if ignorant in the world. One who speaks or asks improperly, by either, incurs enmity or perishes. Where there is no righteousness or purpose, nor proper service, knowledge should not be imparted, like a good seed in barren ground. The knower of Brahman should rather die with his knowledge than sow it in a desert, even in dire distress. Knowledge says to the Brahmin, 'I am your treasure; protect me. Do not give me to the envious, so that I may remain powerful.' Some call knowledge a treasure because it brings happiness here; whoever holds it is called a treasure-keeper. To a pure, disciplined student, a Brahmin should impart knowledge, to one who guards it without negligence. Whoever studies without permission, whether worldly, Vedic, or spiritual knowledge, goes to the dreadful hell called Raurava. The body is said to be made of sixteen and a half parts; one should first salute the source from which knowledge is received. Even a Brahmin who knows only the essence of the Sāvitrī, if self-controlled, is superior to one who knows all three Vedas but is uncontrolled and greedy. One should not enter a seat or bed occupied by a superior; if seated on a bed or seat, one should rise and salute him. When an elder arrives, the breath of the young rises up; by rising and saluting, it returns. For one who habitually salutes and serves elders, four things increase: life, wisdom, fame, and strength. A Brahmin should salute one who is older, stating his own name, saying, 'I am so-and-so.' Those who do not know how to salute by name should say, 'I am wise,' and so should all women. At the end of the salutation, one should utter 'bhoḥ' and then one’s name; the sages have said that 'bhoḥ' expresses the essence of the name. In salutation, one should say, 'May you be long-lived, gentle one,' and the last syllable of the name should be pronounced with a prolonged first letter. A Brahmin who does not know how to return a salutation should not be saluted by the learned, just like a Shudra. If, after being saluted, one does not return the salutation, O tiger among men, he certainly goes to hell. The blessed Vishnu says 'Abhīti,' and Shankara says 'I salute you'; thus, both are honored by one who salutes. One should ask a Brahmin about his welfare, a Kshatriya about his health, a Vaishya about his prosperity, and a Shudra about his well-being. One who is initiated, even if younger, should not be addressed by name; one should use 'bho bhavat' as a prefix, as Svayambhu has said. A woman of another man, not related by birth, should be addressed as 'bhavati' or 'subhage' or 'bhagini.' To paternal uncles, maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, priests, and teachers, the youngest should rise and say, 'I am so-and-so.' The mother’s sister, maternal uncle’s wife, mother-in-law, and father’s sister, as well as the teacher’s wife, are all to be honored like the teacher’s wife. The wife of the elder brother, if of the same caste, should be honored daily by the Brahmin with devotion, and he attains the abode of Vishnu. Female relatives returning from travel, the sister of one’s father or mother, and one’s own elder sister, O best of the Kurus, should always be respected like one’s own mother. Of all these, the mother is to be regarded as the greatest, O King; a son, friend, or nephew is to be regarded as equal to oneself. Friendship among citizens is said to last ten years, among artists five years, and among learned Brahmins, even a single year is enough for kinship. A Brahmin of ten years and a king of a hundred years should be regarded as father and son, but the Brahmin is the father of both. Thus, the Kshatriya is the father of the Vaishya, and the Brahmin is the great-grandfather of the Shudra, as declared by the wise. Wealth, kinship, age, deeds, and knowledge—these are the five bases of respect, each higher than the last. Among these five, in the three higher castes, whoever possesses more virtues is worthy of respect, even a Shudra who has reached the tenth degree. The path should be given to the tenth-degree Brahmin, to the sick, the burdened, women, the graduate, the king, and the groom. When these meet, the graduate and the king are to be honored; when these two meet, the graduate should honor the king. A twice-born who, after Upanayana, teaches a student the Veda, with its secrets and rituals, is called an ācārya by the wise. One who teaches a portion of the Veda or its auxiliaries for a living is called an upādhyāya. One who performs the sacraments from conception onward, and teaches another, is called a guru. One who performs the fire-rituals, cooked offerings, and Soma sacrifices for another, being hired, is called a priest (ṛtvij). He who truly imparts both hearing and understanding of Brahman is to be regarded as both mother and father, and should never be harmed in any way.
Ten upādhyāyas equal one ācārya; a hundred ācāryas equal one father; and the mother surpasses the father by a thousand times in honor. Of the giver of birth and the giver of Brahman, the giver of Brahman (knowledge) is greater, for the birth of a Brahmin through knowledge is eternal, both here and after death. If the mother and father produce a child through desire, that is their physical creation; but the teacher, versed in the Veda and the Sāvitrī, gives him his true, immortal birth. After the upādhyāyas, whom I have described as worthy of honor, the great teacher (mahāguru) is considered superior to all. He is said to be as many times greater than ācāryas as there are thousands and hundreds; among all four castes, he is called the great teacher. Śatānīka said: All these twice-born, from upādhyāya onward, whom you have described, I already know; but who is the great teacher? Sumantu said: The Brahmin who lives by the Jayas (epic texts) is called the great teacher. The eighteen Purāṇas, the story of Rāma, the Viṣṇu and Śiva Dharmas, the Bhārata, and the fifth Veda (Mahābhārata), as well as the śrauta dharmas and those taught by Nārada, are all called Jayas by the wise. The one who upholds this entire collection of Brahminical lore is considered the foremost; whoever knows all these Purāṇas here, and the Bhārata, O mighty-armed one, is regarded as all-knowing among men. Therefore, O King, he should always be honored by all castes, especially by Brahmins. Have you not heard the saying of the Lord: 'Whoever helps another, whether with little or much learning, should be regarded as a teacher because of that assistance.'

Sumantu said: The threefold Vedic vow should be observed at the teacher’s house for thirty-six years, or for half that time, or a quarter, or until the end of study. Having studied the Vedas, or even one or two, or even a part, without breaking the vow of celibacy, one may enter the householder’s stage. He who, established in his own duty, is the inheritor of his father’s gift of Brahman, adorned with a garland, and seated on a couch, should be honored first with a cow. With the teacher’s permission, at the proper time of completion, a twice-born should marry a wife of his own caste, possessing the proper marks. Śatānīka said: O best of twice-born, tell me the marks of women. What kind of marks should a maiden have to bring happiness, O King? Sumantu said: What the Brahmins of old declared as the supreme marks of women, bestowing auspicious and inauspicious results for all the worlds, I shall now tell you, O mighty-armed one. Listen attentively, O King, so that by hearing you may recognize a maiden with auspicious marks. The great sages, approaching the best of the gods as he sat at ease, asked him about the marks of women, as you have now asked me. Bowing their heads, they spoke these words to the god: 'O Lord, tell us all the supreme marks of women, which bring auspicious and inauspicious results for all the worlds, so that we may know which maidens are to be praised or not.' Hearing their words, Brahmā spoke: 'Listen, O best of twice-born, I shall tell you all, without omission. Feet that are well-set, with soles like lotuses, are the marks of blessed women, increasing enjoyment. Those with rough, hard, uneven, or half-formed feet, O King, surely attain poverty and misfortune. Fingers that are close-set, round, smooth, and with fine nails, bring great prosperity and even royal status to women. Short fingers indicate a short life; sparse fingers, loss of wealth; thick fingers, servitude and poverty. Fingers that overlap, with thin, round joints, make a woman a slave, even after having many husbands. Thumbs with prominent joints, high tips, and softness bring wealth in jewels and gold; the opposite brings misfortune. Lustrous, smooth, coppery nails indicate good fortune; raised, very fine, silvery nails indicate sons. Pale, cracked, rough, blue, smoky, or coarse nails—'
As spoken by Brahmā to those sages, O descendant of the Kurus, he, having heard their dear words, replied thus.

Description of marriage duties. Brahma said: A woman who is not of the same family line as the mother, nor of the same lineage as the father, is praised for marriage and union among twice-born men. One whose birth is not known, whose father is not recognized, should not be given in marriage by the wise, fearing the wrong of 'putrikā' (daughter's son). For Brāhmaṇas, a woman of the same varṇa is praised for marriage; for those who act according to desire, the others are considered lower in order. For Kṣatriyas also, the same-varṇa woman is first, O best of twice-born; two others are considered lower, but only by desire, not by law. For Vaiśyas, only one is praised—the same-varṇa woman by law; the second, lower, is by desire, not by law. For Śūdras, Manu said, only a Śūdra woman is wife by law; among all four varṇas, O best of twice-born, the groom is the one who marries. But for Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas, even in distress, in no circumstance is a Śūdra woman prescribed as wife. Twice-born men who, out of delusion, marry women of lower birth quickly bring their families and offspring to the state of Śūdras. By placing a Śūdra woman on the altar, the sage Utathya became fallen; by begetting a son with her, he attained fallen status. By having a son with a Śūdra woman, Śaunaka became a Śūdra; even the Bhṛgus and others, in this way, become fallen. A Brāhmaṇa who lies with a Śūdra woman goes to a lower state; by begetting a son with her, he loses his Brāhmaṇa status. The offerings to gods, ancestors, and guests, which are most important, are not accepted by the ancestors and gods of such a person, and he does not go to heaven. For one who has drunk the froth of a low-caste woman, whose breath is tainted, and who is born from her, there is no prescribed atonement. O best of Brāhmaṇas, I will briefly tell you the good and bad for all four varṇas here and after death, and the eight kinds of marriage. The eight are: Kāya, Daiva, Ārṣa, Prājāpatya, Asura, Gāndharva, Rākṣasa, and the eighth, Paiśāca, which is lowest. Hear, O best of twice-born, which of these are righteous for each varṇa, and their merits and faults, and also the merits and faults in offspring. For Brāhmaṇas, the first four; for Kṣatriyas, the next four; for Vaiśyas and Śūdras, only three, excluding Rākṣasa. The first four, beginning with Brahma, are praised for Brāhmaṇas; for Kṣatriyas, Rākṣasa is one; for Vaiśyas and Śūdras, Asura is one. For Kṣatriyas, three are righteous, two are unrighteous; Paiśāca and Asura are never to be done. Whether separately or mixed, the previously mentioned marriages—Gāndharva and Rākṣasa—are righteous for Kṣatriyas. Covering and honoring the learned and virtuous, inviting him, and giving the girl—this is called the external righteous marriage. When a sacrifice is performed, and the officiant is working, adorning the girl and giving her—this is called Daiva marriage. Giving a pair of cows or two, as a gift, and giving the girl according to rule—this is called Ārṣa marriage. Giving the girl after worship, with the words, 'Let both follow dharma together,' is called Prājāpatya marriage. Giving wealth to the relatives of the girl, and giving the girl by one's own will—this is called Asura marriage. The mutual union of the girl and the groom by their own desire is known as Gāndharva marriage, arising from passion. Abducting a crying, wailing girl by force, after beating, cutting, or breaking—this is called Rākṣasa marriage. Approaching a sleeping, intoxicated, or inattentive girl in secret—this most sinful marriage is called Paiśāca, the eighth. For the best of Brāhmaṇas, marriage with water is praised; for the other varṇas, marriage is by mutual desire. Hear, O Brāhmaṇas, the merit of each of these marriages as I properly declare. Ten previous and ten future generations are certainly freed from sin by a son born of a Brāhmī marriage. Hear about a son born of Daiva marriage, O Brāhmaṇas: he frees seven generations before and after. A son born of Ārṣa marriage frees both men and women, O Brāhmaṇas. In the four marriages beginning with Brahma, sons endowed with Brahmic splendor, approved by the virtuous, are born in order. They are endowed with beauty, strength, wealth, fame, many sons, righteousness, and live a hundred years. In the other marriages, know that sons are cruel, liars, and enemies of Brahma and dharma. From blameless marriages, blameless offspring are born; from blameworthy marriages, blameworthy offspring are born—therefore, one should avoid blameworthy marriages. The marriage ritual of holding hands is for same-varṇa marriages; in different-varṇa marriages, the ritual is as prescribed for the marriage. A whip is to be taken by a Kṣatriya bride, a goad by a Vaiśya bride, and a piece of cloth by a Śūdra bride with the best fee. The wise father should not accept even a small bride-price for his daughter; accepting a bride-price out of greed is selling one's child. Relatives who, out of delusion, live off a woman's wealth or clothing, are sinners and go to a lower state. Some say that the bride-price in Ārṣa marriage is a pair of cows, but that is false; whether small or large, it is still a sale. If the relatives do not accept a bride-price, it is not a sale; it is only an honor for the maiden and pure kindness. Having obtained a wife in this way, a Brāhmaṇa who desires great fame should settle in the best land. The sages said: O Brahma, which land is supreme, and which is holy in your opinion? Where does a Brāhmaṇa, living elsewhere, obtain fame, O lotus-born? Brahma said: Where dharma does not decline in any of its four parts, that land is supreme, O Brāhmaṇas, and that is holy in my view. Where dharma, as taught by the learned, is practiced, and as prescribed in the śāstra, that land is considered supreme. The sages said: O best of gods, tell us about the dharma practiced by the learned and as prescribed in the śāstra, for we are greatly curious. Brahma said: Hear about the dharma practiced by the learned, the good, always free from hatred and passion, and approved in the heart. Desire for sense objects is not praised, nor is absence of desire; but desire for Vedic study and Vedic ritual is praised. All acts, including sacrifices and vows, arise from intention; all vows and rules are said to arise from intention. Without desire, no action is ever seen here; whatever anyone does, that is the act of desire. The Veda is the root of dharma, as are smṛti and good conduct, and also the satisfaction of one's own self. One should consider everything with the eye of knowledge and abide in one's own dharma, giving priority to śruti. One who always follows the dharma taught in śruti and smṛti attains great fame here and the world of Indra after death. Śruti is known as the Veda; dharmaśāstra is smṛti; in all matters, these two are to be examined, for dharma arises from them. A twice-born who disregards both, relying on logic alone, is to be shunned by the good as a nāstika and Veda-blasphemer. The Veda, smṛti, good conduct, and what is pleasing to oneself—these four, O Brāhmaṇas, are the direct marks of dharma. Knowledge of dharma, O Brāhmaṇas, is not to be attached to wealth and desire; for those seeking dharma, the Veda is the highest authority. For one whose rites from conception to cremation are prescribed by mantras, there is authority in the Vedas and in recitation.

The Duties of Marriage: On Women, and the Conduct of Men Brahma said: Now listen to what a householder must do, as I explain it to you in detail, O best of twice-born, according to the scriptures. At the marriage fire, one should perform the household rites as prescribed; the wife, married according to the rites, should reside in an auspicious place in the home. Without her own proper shelter, a wife cannot be protected or maintained—just as with wealth, so with wives; therefore, this rule is given. O giver of honor, the causes of the three aims of life are reversed when there is lack of protection; thus, protection of women is considered essential. By nature, due to the satisfaction of men, and by considering virtues and faults, and from association with the wicked, women must indeed be protected. They say there are three types of shelter for men: in the house of another, in one's own house, and in a new acquisition—for the sake of protecting wealth and gaining what was not previously attained. A noble, disciplined, wise, truthful, resolute, humble, righteous, and generous man should be known as a proper protector. In a city, town, village, or hamlet, or wherever one must reside for a journey, one should live among righteous people. With the permission of a teacher, village head, or elders, and without disturbing neighbors, one should establish a pure residence. The house should be far from the doors, courtyards, halls, all artisans' dwellings, gambling dens, brothels, taverns, actors, and those who live by such means. It should also be far from heretical shrines, the king's road, and the houses of prominent families; it should be well-protected and suited to one's means of livelihood. It should have a single entrance, be enclosed, clean on all sides, filled with virtuous and trustworthy people, and have blameless neighbors. According to the science of architecture, it should be built on land sloping east or north, divided for various activities, and pleasing in all seasons. It should be equipped with shrines, bathing rooms, water storage, cattle sheds, kitchens, and stables for cows and horses, with places for servants and dependents. There should be separate quarters for women inside and outside, furnished with all necessities, with divided sleeping areas, and overseen by trustworthy elders. Because of lack of protection, there arise mixed castes and other faults among wives; many such defects have been seen, so women must always be protected. One should not give women freedom, nor trust them, nor allow them to act independently; one should behave as if trusting, but always apply proper discipline. One should never grant them authority except over cooking and related tasks; women, like villagers, are fit for enjoyment only when well-governed. They should always be kept engaged in their duties, so that, being constantly occupied, they remain free from ignorance. Poverty, excessive beauty, bad company, independence, fondness for drinking, eating, gossip, and idleness—

Association with deceivers, fortune-tellers, shaven-headed beggar-women, midwives, and the like; with cowherds, and even with good men who disguise themselves, beggars, and artisans— Contact in massages, garden outings, and invitations to gardens; association at pilgrimages, religious gatherings, and public ceremonies— Separation from the husband, poverty in her own or her husband's family, lack of sweetness, harshness, and being frequently criticized by men— Excessive cruelty, excessive tolerance, and constant fearfulness; being dominated by women—these are serious faults. Because women are dependent on their husbands, only the man is blamed; just as a servant's faults reflect on the master, so too with wives. Therefore, as previously described, women should be protected with discipline and, when necessary, with punishment, applied at the proper time and in the proper manner. By caring for many wives with appropriate attention, one should treat them equally, giving them duties, gifts, and respect according to their order and worth. The primary consideration for women is noble birth, then suitability and having good sons; in their absence, wealth becomes the cause of honor. Therefore, one should not grant honor based on wealth alone, nor reject for lack of it; among the virtuous, actions alone should be the basis for esteem. One who bestows honor or dishonor suddenly, without cause, is considered fickle and loses respect because of such inconsistency. Just as honor and dishonor are given without reason, so too, when the cause arises, those dependent on them strive for separation. This is the reason for honoring children—when the main concern is the family's suitability for offspring. From such union comes happiness for men, and great sorrow from separation; therefore, even beloved things should be given up for one's own benefit. Thus, it is understood that all people are ultimately devoted to their own interests; fame comes from honor, but honor can also lead to delusion. Therefore, wives and servants must be controlled, as well as twice-born men, so that one may attain greater and greater welfare here and hereafter. In matters of duty, wealth, and pleasure, one should not be overly suspicious of women; by being suspicious, one only harms oneself. A wife is half of a man's body in the pursuit of duty and other aims; therefore, one should never cause her pain or act against her. At sacrifices and festivals, one should not single out any wife without cause; in giving clothes or betel, one should act equally. Affection and aversion, and differences in love, arise from desire in private; but in care and speech, equal treatment is praised. During her period, all wives should be approached as if they were beloved; the one of noble birth, the one of good conduct, and the one with children, each in order. By the proper method, with the northern part of the bed, during her period, one should act equally, not disturbing each wife's place. The constant rotation of residences is considered as taking away their life; the pain of menstruation and the joy of union are as before. The pain experienced with another wife, whether good or bad, in private, or any longing—one should not dwell among co-wives with such feelings. If anything is said by one about another, one should disregard it and reflect on it oneself. One should not rebuke them even with words for mutual jealousy or tales; knowing their virtues and faults, one should not act unfairly. In matters of clothing, ornaments, and food, and in regard to their children, the father should be impartial, not considering the mother's faults. A wise man does not blame one for the faults of another; but as for their children, both parents should treat them equally. One should always know, both openly and secretly, their affection, aversion, intentions, and purity or impurity, using trusted servants as spies. Knowing oneself to be subject to the mind's whims, how can one trust women, who are the abode of all indiscipline? Old female servants, nurses, attendants, the woman's mother and father, eunuchs, and elders are considered spies. By means of various stories, with those of similar character and compassion, one should discover their inner intentions at the appropriate time. When such stories are told, one should observe their facial expressions and other signs to discern their true feelings. By stories of Sita, Arundhati, Shakuntala, and others, and by tales of good and bad conduct, one should understand their inclinations. In stories about the wicked, the virtuous, and others, affection arises in conversation, and friendship is formed with men as well. Thus, by inference from their conduct, one should truly discern the intentions of women and act accordingly. From women who are hostile, even separation at the cost of one's life is seen, as in the case of kings; therefore, one should guard them carefully. King Shubhadhvaja was killed by his queen with a hidden weapon in her braid; the king of Sauvira was killed by his queen with a jeweled belt. Bhadrasena was slain by his brother at the queen's instigation; the king of Karusha was killed by his son with a mirror-sword. Two kings of Kashi, honored and respected, were poisoned by a woman of Anandapura and met their end. Thus, O great ones, kings and Brahmins have been destroyed by women; what need to speak of others? Therefore, a wife must always be guarded with constant vigilance, and cared for according to her virtues and faults. Because of unequal treatment, sudden changes, and especially the presence of co-wives, women develop aversion and anger toward their husbands. From this comes old age and even enmity for the husband; therefore, one should not employ actions that destroy wives. They do not easily abandon the customs of their own families or unrighteousness, nor do they overlook virtues, especially when oppressed. There are generally three causes for a woman's chastity: lack of affection for another man, love for her husband, and concern for her own safety. Therefore, women should always be well-protected and cared for with appropriate attention, and always kept engaged in their duties. The best wife is won over by conciliation and gifts, the middling by the next two, and the lowest by both together. Division and punishment may be used, especially before children are born; for the rest, conciliation and gifts should follow. Those whose conduct is ruined and who act against their husband's interests should be abandoned by the virtuous, for they are like deadly poison. Those who are noble-born, virtuous, modest, and devoted to their husbands should always be cherished with ever-increasing affection.

Praise of Scripture Brahma said: Thus, the conduct of men regarding women has been briefly described; now, the conduct of women among men will be explained. By properly serving their husbands, women bring pleasure and prosperity to men, bear sons, and attain heaven and unseen rewards; therefore, this rule is cherished. Whatever is to be done, everything depends on the prescribed rule; if done otherwise, it becomes fruitless, even if manifest. All actions depend on rules, even those that seem fruitless; they are the causes of the three aims of life, especially the great undertakings. Knowledge of all attainable rules is based solely on scripture; both visible and invisible results depend on injunctions and prohibitions. Women have no authority over scripture, nor over the memorization of texts; therefore, some here consider such instruction to be useless for them. But women have a special role in ritual action according to scripture; when the husband dies, a virtuous wife is praised, as stated in the Smriti. Therefore, knowing from scripture what is to be done or not done, the master should properly instruct them in virtues and faults, as a king instructs his subjects. Indeed, some women, by special attainment, have knowledge of scripture; but the claim that women have authority over scripture is meaningless. Some Brahmins, learned in the Vedas, are engaged in ritual and external observances; yet, by birth alone, they are considered qualified here. Rituals are performed by those learned in the Vedas and scriptures, both scriptural and worldly; even if they are near, only scripture is the foundation for them. Among hunters, fishermen, cowherds, and others, one sees the avoidance of inauspicious days, eclipses, and the like. This conduct regarding what is proper or improper, and the established order, is the very life of people and of scriptural statements, based on what is desired. Therefore, for all four castes and all stages of life, whether primary or secondary, scriptural authority must be understood. It is impossible to know the exact sequence of worldly and scriptural matters; therefore, scripture alone should be regarded as authoritative, just as the body depends on action. In scripture and the Purana, there is only a twofold grasp by the non-believers; one should follow the path established by the great, without doubt. Because the root of household duties is the chaste wife, I will now explain the rule for serving the husband.
Brahma said: For all those who are to be honored, this is the rule of honoring: always act with the mind's agreement, with understanding, and with the intention of benefit. A woman is of three kinds: maiden, remarried, and courtesan; and among them, there are those who are dear, moderately dear, and not dear, as well as suitable and unsuitable. Again, among these, there are three types: equal, superior, and inferior; and as before, the conduct towards the superior and inferior is according to what is desired or undesired, whether dear or not dear. For the lowest and not dear, the behavior is considered like that of a wife to her husband and similar relationships. For those who are forbidden, food and such things are to be carefully regulated. The distinctions of one, two, or many have been described; we will now explain the conduct of eldest and others, O best of twice-born. The conduct of women is twofold: external and internal. External is towards anyone other than the husband; internal is bodily and mental. By distinguishing between relatives and others, the external is again twofold. Each of these—revered, equal, and inferior—should be treated in three ways. Bodily relations, too, are of three kinds: secret, open, and bodily; these should be practiced appropriately, according to the husband's disposition. Mother, father, sister, brother, paternal uncle, teacher, maternal uncle, their wives, sister-in-law, husband, husband's mother, father's sister, nurse, elderly women, and anyone of equal status—these are the most respected group for women, including the first wife and co-wife.
With brothers-in-law, friends of the husband, and those given to jesting, a woman should avoid being alone in secluded places, as well as playful talk. For most women of good family, the causes of moral ruin are constant association with the wicked in private, independence, and excessive joking. In bad company, women are hasty; for the young, jesting is not proper. The boldness of independent women should be restrained in private. When a man shows wicked gestures or intentions, or is motivated by evil, she should regard him as a brother or father and avoid him. A man’s advances—such as persistent conversation, smiling, or glances—should be avoided, as should the exchange or acceptance of objects by hand. Standing at the doorway, looking at the king’s road, wandering in gardens and such places, or leaving the house without reason should be avoided. Standing in the presence of many, restlessness of eyes, speech, or body, spitting, sighing, loud laughter, or idle talk; association with wicked women, shamelessness, or fleeting glances—these should be avoided. Attachment to secret rituals or living with others is generally the behavior of wicked people and should be shunned by a woman who wishes to preserve the honor of her family.

Brahma said: A woman who sees her husband as a deity, in thought, word, and deed, should always act for his welfare, as if she were born from half his body. She should regard what pleases him as dear, and what he dislikes as disagreeable; she should always turn away from what is unrighteous or harmful to him. Knowing what is dear to him, what is wholesome, and how to maintain harmony, she should never be careless in her duties to all the household. In religious and ancestral rites, in her husband's bathing and eating, and in the proper reception of guests, she should never neglect what is appropriate. The house and her own body are the two domains of a housewife; both should be cared for with diligence, the house first and then herself. After thoroughly cleaning the house and performing the prescribed worship three times a day, she should properly arrange for the duties and enjoyments of the household. In the morning, midday, and afternoon, and in between, she should sweep the house and never throw out refuse at night. The dung and waste of cows, buffaloes, and other animals should be removed with care, and the stalls cleaned and arranged. She should know how to provide for and manage the servants and workers, both inside and outside the house, and ensure their proper care and supervision. She should gather vegetables, roots, fruits, vines, and medicinal herbs, as well as all kinds of seeds, at the right time and according to her ability. She should collect copper, bronze, iron, wooden, bamboo, and earthenware vessels, and various other containers as needed. Water jars, pitchers, ladles, vegetable dishes, and vessels for oil and milk should be kept in readiness. She should have pestles, grinders, sieves, churning rods, strainers, and chains. Tongs, water pots, skewers, spatulas, stones, winnowing baskets, hand tools, ladles, and roasting pans should all be maintained. Scales, measures, cleaning cloths, and baskets should always be kept ready with care. Asafoetida, cumin, caraway, long pepper, black pepper, mustard, coriander, dry ginger, and the three or four kinds of aromatic spices; salt, alkaline substances, vinegar, sour fruits, split amla, tamarind, and all kinds of oils should be collected. Dry wood, kindling, fermented products, flour, milk products, and various tubers should be kept. All things needed for daily and occasional tasks should be gathered as appropriate to the household's means. Whatever is not available at the time of need should be collected in advance, as suitable, with care. For grains—whether husked, pounded, ground, dry, wet, or cooked—she should always assess their decrease and increase.
